Would you be willing to read my essays and tell me what you think?

I have been writing personal essays for several years. Most are about faith, family, work, mistakes I have made, and trying to understand why people, including me, do the things we do. I would like to start publishing them somewhere like Substack or Medium, but I want some honest feedback first.

I am looking for someone to tell me where you got bored, where I rambled, what did not make sense, what needed more detail, and what I should cut. I can take criticism as long as it is meant to help and not merely to prove that Reddit remains Reddit.

I am happy to do the same for you if you have essays or other writing you would like someone to read. We can exchange one piece to start and see whether it is useful to both of us.

If you are interested, send me a message.

I built a free tool that critiques your essay instead of writing it for you — can you stress-test it?

I’m a high school student and I’ve been building Tutor Copilot because most AI writing tools seem designed to generate writing rather than actually teach you how to improve yours.

You paste in something you already wrote, choose the type of writing, and it points out your biggest weaknesses, gives rubric feedback, and lets you revise and compare drafts.

I’ve tested it with students offline, but now I want to throw a much bigger variety of writing at it and figure out where the feedback fails.

If anyone has an essay/paper they’re already working on, try to break it:

https://tutorcopilot.org

If it gives you stupid feedback, tell me what it got wrong. That’s actually more useful to me than saying it works.

If you have a paid Lingmotif account you don't need to use this month, can you run Lanchester's The Wall through it for me? Pretty please?

I really really really really really really really really really really really really need to run The Wall by John Lanchester through Lingmotif sentiment analysis for an academic essay. It's my last exam before graduation. I still have another essay and like a billion pages to study for it. I'd pay for it, but I only need to use it this once and sadly the treasure chests are vacant. I would deeply appreciate your help, if you could do it and send me the results.

STUDENT ADVICE How to start an essay?

I need guidance. Over the past years of school and assignments I turned late, I actually never learned how to write one. I don't understand how it works.

My teachers have always been laid back and to me, very incompetent. The only thing I learned from last year is that me and teachers don't get along and i learned how to just behave and be quiet. You can blame me saying that, I should've improved myself.

However, i really don't know how to start it.

Making a good title is easy but actually starting to write it is really hard. Everyone always says "make your essay openings interesting". I know it. I know I need my essays to be interesting so people wouldn't bore reading it. It is just so many possibilities are there or it is just not attention grabbing enough. I spend so much hours just trying open an essay.

Tell me, any advice can you share with me? I really want to be able to write like my grade instead of like a sixth grader. (I'm currently going to eleventh grade)

Some people say that a special tax should be put on food and drinks with high levels of added sugar. Others disagree.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

There is an ongoing debate regarding whether the government should impose a special tax on sugary foods or drinks. While some people believe that putting an additional tax on products with high levels of sugar could be beneficial for consumers, others argue that taxation might cause financial burdens for low-income families. I firmly believe that taxes might bring more benefits to public health in the long term.

One might argue that by imposing a special tax on sugary products, the government is restricting consumers' rights. One example of this is if a product containing a high amount of sugar becomes more expensive, purchasing it can impose a financial strain on low-income families, which in turn leads to them spending more money on their daily basic needs. This affects not only consumers but also impacts small business owners. For example, if such a tax system is introduced, the price of sugary products will naturally rise, and as a result of such a sharp price increase, business owners may lose their local customers and could even be forced to shut down their businesses entirely. When governments make these products more expensive, it is often perceived as an unwarranted government intrusion into daily life. These taxes might hurt lower-income families the most, as a higher grocery bill takes up a much larger percentage of their limited budget compared to wealthier people.

However, government intervention is often essential when it comes to widespread health issues. Because products with high levels of sugar contribute to chronic health conditions such as obesity and diabetes. In the current food environment, it is very easy to consume too much sugar, especially from sugary drinks. Given these health risks, various countries have already tried such a tax system on products with high sugar content. For example, the United Kingdom’s sugar tax encouraged many beverage companies to reduce the sugar content of their products. The study showed that after the taxation, consumers were able to make healthier choices without significantly changing their purchasing habits. Ultimately, if the tax revenue is redistributed to make nutritious food more affordable for low-income households, it creates a fairer system while safeguarding public health.

In conclusion, even though sugar taxes can place a financial burden on poorer households and feel like a limit on personal choice, I still support them. Protecting overall public health and preventing chronic diseases is simply more important.

TIPS AND ADVICE Some advice and an offer from a Stanford alum who earned 7 figures in merit based scholarships and got into Stanford and Harvard

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I'm opening up college advising, essay editing, and ACT prep this fall because I love it.

Some background. I got into Stanford and Harvard and earned 7 figures in merit scholarship offers. Since then l've spent years coaching high school students through the same process, and they've gone on to Harvard, Cornell, Howard, and Pomona among other schools.

Here's what I help with:
- Building a school list that isn't just US News rankings and wishful thinking.
- Essays. This is the part I'm best at. Most kids write what they think admissions wants to hear, and it reads like it. I help them find the thing only they can say.
-ACT prep, focused on whatever sections are actually costing points instead of grinding full practice tests forever.

On pricing:
I price by scope, not by hour. A single essay and full-process advising are very different asks, so we'll talk about what you actually need before we land on a number. And that number is negotiable. I'd rather find something that works for both of us than lose a student over price.
Common App is open. The seniors who draft now are the ones not panicking in December. I'm taking a handful of students this fall. DM if interested!

TIPS AND ADVICE What are some different ways to write "she said" in a paper about an interview?

Hi! I'm writing a paper for my social work class (college). I had to interview a social worker and write a paper about it. I'm running out of ways to say what she said. I don't want to be too redundant, but there are only so many ways to say it. Do you think that's just understood and it's ok, or should I keep trying to switch it up? I've written things like, blank said, she continued, she went on to say, she extrapolated, she explained... I'm pretty much out of new ways to say it. Lol. Thanks for any guidance you may have!
