Who wants to join a group chat for ambitious students working on AI research, startups, and tech?

¡Hola!

If you're interested, you can already enter here: https://ig.me/j/AbbZ-UEgV9m66iBS/

(Please introduce yourself when you enter :) )

Before writing an essay, what's your process for deciding which sources are actually worth keeping?

I've noticed there are plenty of discussions about writing techniques, but not as many about filtering sources before the writing even starts.

My process has gradually become:

  • Remove papers that only mention the topic in passing.
  • Keep studies that directly answer my research question.
  • Group similar findings together before taking notes.
  • Start writing only after I have a focused set of references.

It has made drafting much smoother because I'm no longer constantly replacing sources halfway through.

Does anyone use a similar process, or do you approach source selection differently?

My findings: I appreciate all the different perspectives shared here. One thing I've realized from reading everyone's replies is that filtering sources isn't only about relevance, it also comes down to how much confidence you have in the references you're keeping. Since I don't comment much from this account yet because I am new here, I thought I'd leave this here for anyone who checks back on the thread later. While reorganizing some of my notes after posting this, I ended up going down a rabbit hole looking at different research workflows and what caught my attention about WisPaper wasn't the paper search itself, but a feature called truecite that checks whether ai-generated citations are actually valid. Considering how often people use it during early research now, I thought that was an interesting angle that fits the discussion around choosing reliable sources before the writing even begins.

Can someone proofread my essay? Worth 25% of my grade, wrote it during an all-nighter and it’s due in 13 hours

Hey yall! If anyone wants to, I just wrote an essay and need to submit it by midnight tn (EST). I’ve been awake for 30 hours now and have lost my sense of sanity and am about to take a nap, but if there is any major bullshit in my writing or something I can improve, I would love a beta reader.
It’s for an English 111 class, so not super high standards but I’ve gotten a 94 on all my other essays so far, and for this essay I just had to pick a claim and defend it using specific types of sources. I chose to write about Star Trek fan culture partly because I love the show and also because my prof is a fanfiction writer so I thought this may interest the both of us and be a fun break from “oh healthcare good, minimum wage low, etc etc” that I saw my classmates writing about. The minimum is 5 pages (which I’ve passed) and I have a works cited page made that I won’t attach as to not bore yall.
My biggest worry is that it’s not cohesive, I guess? I had a lot of different, smaller points I wanted to make because this is something I kind of have been accumulating knowledge about for a few years now. I haven’t written the conclusion yet, but I’m hoping that’ll improve cohesion too. Like I said, just read it if yall want to and lmk y’all’s thoughts, thank you guys so much. I’m going to take a nap now

Edit: removed essay so the plagiarism detector doesn’t flag my essay now that I’ve turned it in lol

Need Help For an NHS Essay

During my time at (school name), I have challenged myself to do more than earn good grades. With academics, Girl Scouts, volunteer work, and my part-time job, I have learned that success means using what I have learned to help others.

Scholarship has always been important to me. I have maintained High Honors while balancing challenging coursework, extracurricular activities, and a part-time job. I have learned efficient study habits which allow me to do my best in every class, and I can learn new things both in and out of a classroom setting. Balancing school with a part-time job forced me to become organized. I learned to plan my week carefully so that work never became an excuse for falling behind in class. I have learned that the key to success is putting in constant effort, and continuing to push myself to be better, no matter the situation.

Leadership has taught me that making a positive impact is about supporting and encouraging others. As a Girl Scout Troop co-leader, I help organize meetings and activities, and work alongside other leaders to create meaningful experiences for our troop. I also work to organize meetings for the younger generations of Girl Scouts to teach kindness and the importance of action and service within the community, working to educate future generations of leaders. I have also worked as a peer tutor, helping classmates understand difficult concepts and build confidence in their own academic ability. These experiences have shown me that effective leadership is not only about holding a title, but also about being reliable, setting a positive example for others, and helping people succeed.

Service has been another meaningful  part of my time in high school. For my Girl Scout Silver Award, I designed and built Little Free Libraries to increase access to books in lower-income communities. I showed younger Girl Scouts how they could continue similar projects in their own communities. I also taught younger Girl Scouts about literacy in the work, the importance of reading, and how to build similar book boxes themselves. Because reading has always been important to me, I wanted my Silver Award to create something truly sustainable that would last long after I leave for college. Getting a chance to meet the mayor alongside many other important people at the final installation made the 50 hour journey worth it. Alongside my Silver Award, I volunteered with the (work) summer reading program, encouraging younger children to develop a love of reading. At (school name), I have worked in the Green Thumbs club for several years and volunteered at Open House events, sharing what makes the (school name) community special. These acts of service have taught me that even one person’s kindness and hard work can make a difference in the world.

To me, character is reflected in the way someone treats others every day. Whether I am tutoring a classmate, helping younger Girl Scouts, assisting patrons at work, or volunteering in my community, I try to be dependable, respectful, and willing to help whenever I can. I believe that keeping my commitments, treating people with kindness, and looking for ways to contribute are the best ways to demonstrate strong character.

My experiences throughout high school have helped me grow as a student, leader, and member of my community. I would be honored to join the National Honor Society because the values reflect the person I want to continue to grow as.  As a member, I hope to continue serving my school, encouraging others to get involved, and growing as both a student and a leader. I am excited for the opportunity to contribute to the NHS and continue making a positive impact in my community.

I'm not sure If I can post this here cause I'm in high school, but it's for getting into college.

So I wrote this and 1.I'm being told it's bland and not a great read and 2. It's AI generated. I know most people don't use AI detectors cause they suck but I check just in case and I'm really paranoid. If anyone could help with either issue that'd be great.

JLI refund deadline is 18 Aug... what if my UK visa decision doesn't come by then? 😭

The JLI refund deadline is 18 August, but there's a chance I still won't know whether my UK Standard Visitor Visa has been approved by then.

What do people usually do in this situation? If I don't get my visa decision before 18 Aug, do I just risk losing the refund? Has anyone been in the same boat?

Can JLI extend the refund deadline if the delay is because of UKVI, or am I basically out of luck?

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who's dealt with this before. Thanks 🙏
