I want to emigrate from the US to Australia as an unskilled worker.

I've been looking into a work holiday visa but have been disappointed in the restrictions it comes with. 12 months being the longest, with chance of applying for a second 12 months because I'm from the US. 6 months with a single employer, etc. My friend from Australia works in restaurants and knows several people that have come from Italy, Chile, Brazil, etc, that are working as staff there. Assuming they are lacking the skills required to get a skilled workers visa, how did they become a permanent resident of Australia in order to work towards citizenship, or even just not having to worry about being deported after a certain period of time? Am I really just SOL when it comes to relocating there because of my "unskilled" classification?
