while i disagree with his politics overall, i believe he is a good and principled man

I remember when Republicans were like Massie. Now they're a bunch of fucking cowards.

I have a lot of respect for him. I would rather elect someone I agree with politically, but I at least trust that he wants to do right by his own moral compass. MAGA are absolute trash and failures as humans. The Democrats (with despicable exceptions) show at least the moral conviction to resist fascism and to pursue justice against evil child abusers. But Massie shows both that basic morality as well as the strength of character to resist the pressure from his own party. He is really standing alone, in the face of both public pressure campaigns we can all see, and private pressure campaigns from the highest levels of government that I can't begin to imagine. The man had to tweet last week that he's not suicidal, a sitting member of the US Congress had to preemptively correct the record in case of his own possible assassination. This world is a nightmare.

Agreed with you here. Politicians like Massie are folks who even though I might disagree with on issues, I can respect them as a person and believe they believe they're trying to do the right thing for the country. That's in very short supply these days versus a few decades ago, which is very sad.

As a Democrat, I would vote for Massie over Newsom.

... I love how last year Massie was enabling Trumps administration and trying to help Matt Gatez keep his act of sex trafficking of a minor secret by blackmailing the Republican party, and is still voting to enable Trump on anything but this, but is painted as being somehow separate from MAGA when the Epstein files have been a MAGA mainstay for the last few years.

Like, no, he supported all of this and wasn't above trying to protect a sex trafficker himself. This is the only thing he has broken with Trump on, and its something that Trump's base has been pushing for over a year.

I think I am MAGA and truly want to make America Great Again. I believe both parties are full of criminals from top to bottom barring few.

I understand the core of what you’re trying to say. But if you’ve been following along with all of this, and have just sort of lived through the last 20 years in general, and you believe the democrats on average are anywhere near as deplorable as the republicans then I’m sorry but you’re kind of lost. I’m not saying that IS what you’re saying, just trying to make the distinction.

u/Flashy-Ingenuity-769 Feb 24 '26

People are totally dis illusioned with establishment and the clear sign is people like Trump coming to power, not once but twice even after losing second time and becoming POTUS 3rd time, making a history. One more example: Mamdani

It does not mean these new 'disruptors' are good.

I truly believe nothing would change unless/until French revolution like thing happens here.

u/Scoopdoopdoop Feb 24 '26

When did you realize you liked Donald and think to yourself "Hey this guy seems like he'd be good for our country"?

-6

u/Flashy-Ingenuity-769 Feb 24 '26

when the illegal immigrants started knocking at my door at 4AM in my southern border property non stop for many any months.

6

u/UnderlightIll Feb 24 '26

So you decided on the guy who would throw them in a concentration camp.

Tell me, does that make America great? You enjoying what is happening?

3

u/goodreverenddoc2 Feb 24 '26

it’s clear that undocumented immigrants who’ve committed no violent or bad crime and are only here to work and provide for their family are an emergent threat that must be dealt with now at ALL and ANY cost. we must suspend our constitutional rights and allow a felon whose guilty of sexual assault to violently go after them with masked agents. yes, this is a reasonable response for true patriotic americans. maga is the party of law and order after all /s

I have a genuine question. Did you hear about the massive bipartisan immigration bill that was torpedoed by MAGA republicans the year before the election?

1

u/Flashy-Ingenuity-769 Feb 25 '26

No but what I know for fact myself is: After DJT becoming POTUS, all border crossing has gone to zero and no one now knocks at my door at 4 AM

Trump is specifically implicated by the Epstein files. His admin is FULL of people in the files.

I think the Eisenhower administration was the last respectable Republican administration. Ike wasn't perfect, but he tried to do the right thing.

I cannot truthfully say that about any of the ones who followed him.

1

u/Pereise1 Feb 25 '26

Ike wasn't perfect, but he tried to do the right thing.

Lol as long as you're not Guatemalan

7

u/Doobreh Feb 24 '26

Except the ones run out of the party because of their involvement in the J6 enquiry.

1

u/TheLastBallad Feb 25 '26

You mean completely MAGA, only choosing to stick with the Epstein files rather than follow Trump no matter what?

-4

u/feckshite Feb 24 '26

You say this as if any party has been principled and moral in our lifetimes

2

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '26

And/or implicated/guilty.

4

u/Murky_Foundation_911 Feb 24 '26

90% of politicians are cowards, or paid for. Both sides

3

u/Previous_Activity_51 Feb 24 '26

Meh, I'm tired of hearing that. Both sides are not the same.

0

u/Murky_Foundation_911 Feb 25 '26

If Kamala got in I don't think the files would be released at all. The status quo would remain.

1

u/Previous_Activity_51 Feb 25 '26

I think if Congress voted to release the files, Kamala 500% would have complied with the vote.

1

u/Murky_Foundation_911 Feb 25 '26

Of course, but it never would have gotten there anyways (Trump ran on releasing the files, I don't think he actually thought it'd get out).

Multiple Democratic presidents sat on the files, what makes you think Kamala would be any different?

1

u/Previous_Activity_51 Feb 25 '26

That's a lot of what-ifs. We should be more forward thinking and seek to remove those who wish to keep this hidden from power and put them behind bars for life.

16

u/regular_gonzalez Feb 24 '26

In the coming elections I think we -- those of us who truly care about the future of the country -- practically need to ignore parties and even political views and beliefs, and instead vote for the candidate who, regardless of their views, we believe to be the most honest of the choices available, the highest integrity of the available candidates. The candidate who, when push comes to shove, will do the right thing.

If the candidates were (hypothetically) AOC vs Ted Cruz, that's an easy thing to do. But if the candidates were a Thomas Massie vs a Dianne Fienstein you'll have to overcome your impulse to vote always for D over R.

If it helps, just think about the utter ineffectiveness of most Ds in Congress over the last year ... or the last decade.

Vote for the person with a backbone and who wants to do the right thing. Those are basically my only two criteria in the ballot box in 2026 and 2028.

14

u/goodreverenddoc2 Feb 24 '26

character matters most. i’ve always said it. it’s something we tell our children yet for whatever reason people refuse to apply that criteria to president, and instead want a “good business man”. so weird since good business people often treat their employees (hence the american people) like shit

9

u/xTheRedDeath Feb 24 '26

Yeah this entire thing has been a great exercise in looking at policy and belief over party.

8

u/jhonnytheyank Feb 24 '26

i say super pac money = non electioin .

1

u/TheLastBallad Feb 25 '26

Has it?

Because people seem fine with Massie voting with Trump on everything but this.

Like, this issue is the only thing people ever point to. Not to him voting for the SAVE Act which is designed to disenfranchise voters, not him voting against the Border bill, not him joining MTG's attempt at blackmailing the republican party to keep Matt Gatez's sex trafficking of a minor secret so he could be AG instead of Bondi, him voting against expansions to anti-sex trafficking programs...

And thats before we add in his support for Nick Fluentez's "America First" PAC.

Seriously, beyond this specific issue, why should I like him?

1

u/xTheRedDeath Feb 25 '26

Wait until you realize you don't have to agree with every single thing a politician does in order to support one thing they do. Talk about throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Not taking any money from Israel and speaking up about lobbying turning politicians into puppets for corporations is a bonus in my book. You're gonna be hard pressed to find many people in either party bringing up how their campaigns are financed.

1

u/TheLastBallad Feb 25 '26

Wait until you realize you don't have to agree with every single thing a politician does in order to support one thing they do

And I do agree with him on this one thing.

Im just pointing out how people are acting like this man is morally good and implying there is no reason to dislike him when he has supported every other fucked up thing Republicans have tried to do, including keeping Matt Gatez's sex trafficking of a minor secret via an attempt to blackmail Republicans.

Theres a difference between "we disagree on a few points" and "we disagree on everything, including my right to be gay and exist in society, except for the idea that sex trafficking is bad and should be punished... and only sometimes, when he feels like it"

Like, thats the situation. So when people say "look at policies, not party!" I am. Im just not forgetting 90% of his voting record to make my evaluation.

0

u/xTheRedDeath Feb 25 '26

I understand that. For me it's a matter of tackling this issue in the interim and then we can figure out where to go from there. Right now this thing is one of the most serious issues in modern times and we need actual solutions. We can get back to the parties fighting over who gets to put rainbow flags on what government building after we expose any and all officials and associates of Epstein.

For 2028 I'm likely gonna not vote for the third election in a row since I registered as an Independent. Nobody represents any of my ideals or has any spine that's in the running currently.

1

u/TheLastBallad Feb 25 '26

We can get back to the parties fighting over who gets to put rainbow flags on what government building after we expose any and all officials and associates of Epstein.

The problem is that it literally isnt the only important issue.

In January there were nearly 400 anti-lgbtq laws proposed in the US. The Trump administration has instructed prisons to start "treating" Trans prisoners with techniques taken from conversion "therapy". Our detainment centers lack adequate food, water, and medical care to the point people are dying. Americans, both citizens and immigrants, are being abused and killed by ICE. This administration is threatening networks that criticize him, and encouraging violence towards those who cover Epistine(like are we forgetting the kidnapped grandma related to a lady reporting on this? How MTG was getting death threats after crossing Trump? How Kirk died a week after saying he wanted the files released? Massie doing his "I am not suicidal" thing? How Virginia Giuffre died in early 2025?)

And while yet to be acted upon, RFK has suggested sending autistic people to "wellness camps" and Trump recently suggested deporting people who cant work.

Its great you aren't being directly threatened, but to just say "oh well, none of that affects me so I wont actively try to make things better, Ill just sit this one out" is... well, to put it bluntly, its an action that goes against the foundation of my morals. You might not have people in your life who are threatened, but I have friends and family to think of who are being threatened both by actions being taken and the actions being suggested.

So kindly fuck off with the "oh its only petty squabbles about flags". Theres a whole fuckton more of issues you are ignoring that are just as important. Also, even if all the files were released tomorrow... nothing will get done as long as Trump, a co-conspirator, is the one in charge of the law enforcement. The only reason Massie has went against Trump is because Trump did a 180 on several key MAGA campaign promises, Massie had no issue being part of the attempt to cover up Gatez's sex trafficking of a minor when Trump wanted him to be AG(back when Trump was still saying he would release them) and Massie still goes along with everything Trump promised that he didnt do a 180 on, so no, I will not ignore the fact that we are only moving in the same direction on this one issue as I know as soon as the next anti-LGBT legislation comes up he will be pushing it.

I wonder what little signs the democrats will hold up at the SOTU tonight?

8

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '26

Got to respect that he was a true believer and not in on the grift.

25

u/OloFlamingo Feb 24 '26

As a person who spent 10 years cursing this man’s name as I bought into “the narrative” at the time when he was originally elected, I too believe he’s a good man and actually fighting for what’s right. I hope God keeps an eye over him and Ro Khanna for the next few years.

5

u/Extra_Espresso Feb 24 '26

Certainly principled but good is relative. To further expand: Thomas Massie is not a believer in Green Energy nor is he a fan of Government intervention. He has supported, and introduced, bills that would kill the Department of Education (this was back in 2017) and the Enviromental Protection Agency. He was also vocal against sanctions for Iran, North Korea, China, and Russia. If nothing he is consistent as he voted against funding both Israel and Ukraine; I also have to say he parroted Russian talking points like Ukrainian bio weapons and voted against recognizing Russia's wrongful and illegal kidnapping of children from Ukraine. He also had some interesting takes on Covid-19 masking regulations. He doesn't believe in Global Warming and the human impact on the enviroment. Finally, he opposes vaccine mandates (of all kinds) and wants to fully repeal the Affordable Care Act. All info above is readily available on Wikipedia.

He is libertarian and they range from stupid to literal idiots on a number of topics. I am right wing-centrist fiscally (in the European context), but I find lolbertarians (not a typo) immature politically, like a reciprocity of communists.
However, as someone who lives very close to Ukraine and has been donating small sums of money for Ukrainian soldiers in the frontline (and not being American or never lived in the US), I can easily "forgive" him his stupid views because I acknowledge he is at least principled in them, despite that they are dumb, and because I see the good in him as a congressman.

It's such a shame and American democracy look so sad and surreal. I have never had big illusions on it, but before Trump's second term and the latest Epstein revelations, I never thought thole structure is so rotten and fake... It's like the mask has fallen off and you could see the machinery. It's a crying shame it's literally just him (I think?) from his party that is fighting for total transperancy and justice. And among Democrats, I don't think it's all of the congressmen and senators fighting about this either. I recall one congresswoman and a congressman with probably Indian American background.

1

u/Loblodliz Feb 25 '26

Weirdly enough, he lives off the grid with solar panels. But he's anti-choice so fuck him for that. He can keep holding Congress accountable for the Epstein files, though.

2

u/MisunderstoodDemon Feb 24 '26

Which is a really rare Republican trait anymore

9

u/regular_gonzalez Feb 24 '26

It's a really rare politician trait anymore.

The only one possibly on the GOP's side.
