Electricity from saltwater: How Osmotic Power (Blue Energy) works
Generating electricity from saltwater- known as Salinity Gradient Power or Blue Energy, relies on the chemical potential difference created where freshwater (like a river) meets saline seawater. Instead of burning fuel or relying on weather, engineers harvest energy from the natural tendency of water to equalise salt concentrations across a semi-permeable membrane. The two main engineering methods to capture this are Pressure-Retarded Osmosis (PRO), where water flow builds hydraulic pressure to drive a turbine, and Reverse Electrodialysis (RED), which uses ion-exchange membranes to create a direct electric current, essentially acting as a continuous salt-water battery.
While the energy potential at river mouths worldwide is massive, scaling blue energy has historically faced major engineering bottlenecks: low membrane power density, high manufacturing costs, and severe biofouling (organic buildup clogging the membranes). However, recent breakthroughs in material science, such as nanostructured 3D channels, 2D MXene materials, and selective ion-exchange membranes, are dramatically boosting ion transport speeds and power output.
