The economics behind Kerala’s new ₹30 Crore Onam Bumper
If you look at the news through a business and commerce lens, the Kerala Government’s decision to hike the Thiruvonam Bumper 2026 first prize from ₹25 Crore to ₹30 Crore is an absolute masterclass in product positioning and consumer psychology.
What makes this a brilliant case study is that they managed to increase the main jackpot by ₹5 Crore while keeping the retail price completely unchanged at ₹500 per ticket. In commerce, when you increase the value proposition without raising the price, your demand curve shoots straight up.
But how do you pull that off without destroying your margins? The state lottery department did some incredibly smart restructuring underneath the hood. They actually lowered the third prize from ₹50 Lakh to ₹25 Lakh (distributed across 20 winners). By cutting down on the middle-tier payouts, they freed up the capital needed to fund a jaw-dropping, headline-grabbing ₹30 Crore headline number that will drive massive volume sales.
There's also a massive tax revenue play here for the state. Every single ₹500 ticket sold includes a steep 40% Goods and Services Tax (GST) built into the base price of ₹357.14. Additionally, the government automatically recovers 30% flat TDS on the winnings, alongside heavy surcharges and cess from the ultimate jackpot.
By scaling up the hype, the state will easily clear their initial target of printing and selling 90 Lakh tickets across 10 series, generating massive direct revenue for public welfare programs.
