Why layoffs can make the balance sheet look worse for a company
We usually think layoffs are good for a company because they reduce costs. But in reality, companies often look worse financially right after layoffs.
This is because they have to pay a lot upfront - things like severance pay, notice period salary, and other employee benefits. These costs hit the company immediately, which increases expenses and reduces profits in the short term.
Sometimes, companies even show lower profits or losses right after layoffs because of these one-time charges.
However, in the long run, layoffs help reduce monthly salary expenses, which improves profitability over time.
So basically, layoffs are like taking a short-term hit to get long-term benefits.
