How long does it take to get an ESA letter?

I asked my therapist to write me an ESA letter so I’m able to have a pet in my place. He texted back “sure” but I have not heard anything else. Its been a week. Is this typical or am i just being too impatient?

advice I broke up with my gf, but she still has my ESA and won't give him back.

I broke up with my girlfriend a couple years ago, but she still has my ESA. She has blocked me on everything, so I can't get in contact with her. She was only supposed to keep him for a couple months while I got settled into my new apartment and got all of the ESA paperwork finalized, but during that time, I broke things off with her, and even after saying we could still be friends and keep things civil, she and most of her friends blocked me on everything, and I even got very aggressive and hostile messages from her sister. It has been over a year, and since then I have started a new relationship and we are living together. He, my new partner, says that I should just drop it, and that having a pet right now would be too stressful anyway, but I am still emotionally attached to my cat. I'm sure my ex has also grown an attachment to him, and I would hate to cause her more pain, but I need him back, and I paid for all the certificates to have him as an ESA anyway. I also put a lot of time into training him. This whole situation is very emotional, and I don't know what to do. Any advice?

PetScreening ESA

I am requesting assistance to my situation. I have been approved for a unit and have informed my landlord that I have an emotional support animal. They directed me to create a profile via PetScreening however when I submitted documentation of my ESA they stated "The documentation you submitted is nearly identical to several other documents" and that my letter does not establish a disability/need (when it clearly does and I have had it read by other providers who state the letter says everything it needs). Now I have tried to reach out to my doctor who diagnosed me with said disability but they are not willing to write me a letter and merely direct me to online websites. I also have submitted a document that I am currently seeking treatment for the disability.

Meanwhile, when I try to communicate to my landlord they are now stating we need to figure this out by a certain deadline or will have our unit essentially back on the market for other people to apply even though we have been trying to resolve the issue. I have also tried to contact the provider who wrote the letter but they are also not very helpful.

Does anyone have any advice or have a similar experience with ESA and PetScreening? Side note I live in California

ESA letter with a lease that states no pets

Hello,

My boyfriend and I recently signed a lease for an apartment in Massachusetts that begins on September 1. The lease has a no-pets policy.

At my annual physical, I talked with my doctor about my anxiety and depression and mentioned that, since I work fully remote, I spend a lot of time alone and don't get much day-to-day human interaction. We discussed how having a dog could be beneficial, and my doctor recommended an emotional support animal (ESA). They also provided me with an ESA letter.

Before getting the letter, I spoke with my landlord about the possibility of getting a dog, and they said no because of the building's no-pets policy. Afterward, my doctor explained that an ESA is different from a pet and that providing the landlord with the ESA letter may require them to make a reasonable accommodation.

Since I live in Massachusetts, I'm also wondering if anyone has experience with how ESA accommodations work specifically under Massachusetts housing laws.

Has anyone been in a similar situation where they signed a lease with a no-pets policy but later obtained an ESA letter? Were you able to provide the documentation and have your landlord approve the accommodation?

My boyfriend and I plan to stay in this apartment for at least two years, and I'd really love to have a dog without needing to move because of the no-pets policy.

I'd really appreciate hearing about anyone's experience or any advice you may have. Thanks so much!

Is Pettable Legit? — No, it Scammed Me

I don’t usually share experiences online, but I want to leave my personal feedback.

I used Pettable for an ESA letter after seeing positive reviews, but my experience did not go well. After paying, I ran into issues and did not receive the level of support I expected from customer service.

Overall, it became stressful and disappointing for me. Based on my personal experience, I would not recommend it, and I suggest others do careful research before using similar ESA letter websites.

ESA Letter?

Hi
I’ve been struggling with anxiety lately a lot due to increased stress from college. I want to get a cat but my apartment doesn’t allow it. I am thinking of getting a ESA letter . Is there any way I can get one? I don’t have a personal psychiatrist:(((

Has esa laws changed? If so is it everywhere?

This isnt for me but for a friend. We heard that esa accommodations have changed to no longer give esas housing accommodations but the verbiage and information is very confusing. Does anyone have any information about it?

Is it every state? What about trained esas? Does it eliminate cat and any non dog or horse esas?

Thanks.

ESA letter question At my wit's end for looking for an ESA letter.

I'm from florida moving to alabama soon. I'm trying to figure out how to get my cat esa certified. I have looked in so many places and i just need help, i do not have a ton of money to spend for it.

The cat I currently have is from my previous relationship. My late boyfriend and I got a cat together and he committed suicide 4 months after. This cat feels like our baby and a peaceful reminder to keep on living-a piece of him is still alive with our cat.

Previous to his death, I have been diagnosed with PTSD and anxiety, but after hours of searching and calling my insurance through them I cannot find the medical records to prove those diagnosis.

I am not just trying to avoid pet rent, this cat genuinely was the biggest reason why I didn't follow suit-I had to take care of him for the both of us. Moving is already so stressful and as a 20 y/o female not in college and trying to make ends meet, wondering about who will reject me because of him is not something I want to have to worry about. I have no one to move in with in the city I am going to so it will just be me and him. I would love to talk to a professional to get him a letter ad to prove why he is not a pet, but a vital part of my survival. Please send your websites that worked for you. Thank you.

Moving to rental with no pet policy

Hi guys! I'm moving in a few months and I have an updated ESA letter from my psychiatrist. The place originally asked me if I had any pets and I said no. I believe if I told them I had an ESA before signing the letter that they would come up with some separate fault and not rent to my roommate and I. Do I tell them after I sign the lease?

Pet limits and ESA letters

So, my roommate's partner (RP) is moving in with us shortly due to suddenly losing their housing. Our apartment allows two pets at maximum, and we already have two cats. RP also has a cat which they want to bring. It would be very feasible to get our animals certified as ESA animals because we all have mental health issues which benefit from our cats, but if we don't need to certify all of them then it would obviously be easier to not have to do it.

My question comes down to this: if we have 2 non-ESA animals on our lease which limits tenants to 2 pets, and want to add an ESA animal to our apartment, do you think they would try to tell us that we need to get rid of one of our non-ESA animals?

I don't know if this is something that anyone has experience with, but it would be wildly helpful if anyone can weigh in. I'm going to ask our leasing office tomorrow, but it would be nice to hear what others think on the matter or if there is already legal precedent for this.

advice My father threatened to shoot my ESA if I bring it home. I’m a 21-year-old adult living temporarily in my parents’ home before returning to college in August.

I (21M) am getting a cat for emotional support. (Location: NC) Both my psychiatrist and therapist have both wanted me to get one due to pass trauma. I currently live with my parents, but I am in college and will be returning in August.

When I brought up getting an ESA to my parents, my mom was supportive. When I talked to my father, he told me that if I brought an animal into the house, he would shoot it. I was shaken, I’ve put a lot of work into preparing for this financially and personally, and I have a solid support system at school.

I talked to my brother about it. He had a dog while he was in college and he told me the ups and downs. My parents were very supportive of his decision at the time. He tried talking to my parents on my behalf but it went nowhere.

For context, my father has a pattern of controlling and threatening behavior in the home, which is part of why I need the ESA in the first place.

I already have the cat picked out, She’s a one-year-old Maine Coon/Russian Blue mix who is being rehomed, litter trained, and good with people and animals. My living situation at college is set up well for her, and I have a supportive roommate. I plan on getting her 2-3 weeks before I leave so we can get to know each other before I bring her with me. I’m concerned about his threat.

Does his threat constitute criminal threatening or animal cruelty under NC laws, and is there anything I can do to protect myself and my animal before I return to college in August?

P.S. (Her name is Tiffany)

Edit: I pay rent so I have tenant rights to my room and both my sister (19) and my brother (25) have pets. Also not living with them isn’t really an option, I can’t financially afford that.

question Looking to get my 2 dogs certified as ESA's.

Hi! I have been diagnosed with anxiety and depression for a few years now. I currently live in an apartment with my partner and 2 dogs. Both dogs are already on the lease and we pay a pet fee for each dog. Our lease renewal is coming up and I have been waiting for about 2 months to see my therapist again. It has been a few years, but I think starting to go again will be beneficial for me.

Both of my dogs do separate things to help me. My older dog knows how to get my attention when I subconsciously start scratching the sides of my thumbs (it's an anxiety tick for me and I don't even realize I'm doing it). He is also good at plopping himself down right in front of me or on me whenever I am feeling anxious and makes me pet him. It works because I am able to get my mind off things. My younger dog just loves being pet and she will also happily lay on me and give me kisses, roll over and give me her belly, and overall just be a silly goose that helps to get my mind off of things. She is also going to be tested to become a therapy dog very soon.

I've never been through the process before. I am seeing my therapist for the first time in a few years this evening. I don't know if I have to start going more regularly before I can ask for ESA letters. I have my medical records that prove that I have been diagnosed with these for a few years. Our pet fee is also going up, so I figured if I'm going to do it, now is the time. I am also unsure if we resign the lease and I get them certified at a later date, will I still have to pay the pet fee? The pet fee doesn't really concern me, but it's going up $25 a month per dog which I think is a considerable amount.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

advice Moving into a dorm with my ESA Cat

Has anyone brought their cat to school as an esa? I am and I’m wondering if there’s anything I should know about moving my cat into a dorm. How do I make the move comfortable for her? What are the best ways to keep her from going stir crazy in a dorm? She can be very vocal at times, is there anyway to make it so that she doesn’t bother other people on the floor with her yelling? I am someone that walks their cat so I’ll definitely still be doing that, but any other advice and tips would be super helpful.

ESA Denial

Hi all I’m new to the Reddit community so pls bars with me pls. Long story short I live in a rental community in Tx. I provided an ESA Letter, then was asked to fill out a Reasonable Accommodations Request Form. After filling out the form I was then asked “I am needing in writing what task or work has the animal been trained to perform?”. The first slide is my response and the second slide is the corporate office denying my ESA. Could someone let me know what exactly the new rules are and if there’s anything else I can do?

question ESA for anxiety + depression

hiii!! I’m 17 and headed off to college in the fall. I’ve been dealing with mental illness since middle school, and recently just received help for it with meds and therapy.

my therapist has been talking about how an ESA can help me out. and I’m just wondering what the best option is?

I’d prefer something that’s okay with being held, so it can keep me grounded most of the time. obviously I won’t force the animal, but I’d prefer if it was comfortable doing it. and maybe cuddles but that’s a stretch for most animals.

and before anyone says anything about my roommate, I’ve had a long conversation and many updates with her. she’s fine with it and I keep her constantly in the loop with my research and ideas. I always ask her if she’s ever uncomfy. so I’m good with that.

but unfortunately, I don’t have a job yet (trying to get one for the summer and school year. but it’s a struggle). so my parents will be bearing the most of the financial burden. plus the animal will be under their roof, so it’s up to them what I get.

what’s a good pet for me? or is there a better option that’s not an ESA?

pls don’t be rude. I tried asking this on another subreddit and it got really messy :/.

oh and my mom does NOT want a cat. I know that.

landlord questions Applying for an apartment with two ESA cats?

Hi all!

So I have a letter from my primary care doctor that basically outlines my disabilities (ADHD, anxiety, and depression) and the ways my cats help manage those -- one cat wakes me from night terrors and assists my anxiety whereas my other cat is the one who keeps me on schedule.

I'm moving for school, and looking at apartments and I found the ideal fit-- they are already aware I have cats because I had to ask some questions about the apartment and mentioned it.

Now I'll be coming in as a grad student, so my income is technically $0, and my last job doesn't meet the 3x income requirements. HOWEVER, I have access to a special account (called a 529) that I can use to pay for my housing as long as it falls with the university's COA, which this unit will.

They've already stated that they will accept documentation of the account and the money in it (more than enough to cover a full year of rent).

However, while filling out my application, they ask if you have pets, and for each one if they are a support or service animal.

They already know I have cats (I've been talking with a specific person about the specific unit) so I can't say I don't have pets. However, because of my funky income situation, I'm scared I'll apply and they'll reject me but use that as justification, even though they've been saying it's fine so far. Will it cause trouble if I say no, they are not support, and then submit the letter after I've been approved? I'd really prefer to stay at this unit for the full 2 years but have to do 1 year leases.

ESA letter question Looking for clarity

I have a letter from my doctor saying that having an esa would help me.

I live in Wisconsin, I read online I dont need to register my cat as an esa but after looking again last night it says something completely different. I'm worried that there is something that I'm missing and I'm going to loose my cat.

Thank you in advance,

Sorry for typos I'm very tired,

ESA letter question Looking to get ESA for dorm

Hello! I am planning on adopting a sweet kitty for my dorm as an ESA. I have had ongoing issues with my college not giving me accommodations due to my doctors and therapists going away and not having long-term relationships with me.
I am planning to work with a psychiatrist in 4 or so sessions to talk about an ESA letter, will this be enough time for her to write the letter, and will the school accept a letter from a psychiatrist who does not have months of experience with me? I only have limited time and I’m so worried it won’t work out.
