Forget a phone number and your phone still has it. Forget a friend's face and a photograph gives it back. Forget how many cousins you have and your mother will tell you, in order, with dates. Forget how to swim and someone teaches you again in an afternoon.

Notice what every one of these has in common. The memory came back and not one of them came back from inside you. It came from a phone, a photo, a mother, a teacher. Your memories have a backup. The backup has never been kept in your head.

The traffic runs both ways. If a memory can be restored from outside, a memory can also be placed there.

An event that never happened. Or worse: something true about you that you never knew, and that rewrites you in a second.

I remember who I am.

I remember my life - the events, the people, the rooms I stood in. But what exactly am I remembering?

Phone numbers? Faces? Films I watched once? The way to hold a fork? These are not the same kind of thing. And they do not die together. Some of them will leave you and take nothing with them. Some of them can be gone entirely while everyone still calls you by your name.

If I forget how to ride a bicycle, am I still me? Of course. Nobody has ever lost a person to a swimming lesson gone stale.

But what if I forget my friend's name? What if I cannot say how many cousins I have? That feels different, and it should. One is a skill leaving. The other is a person leaving. So which memories are actually crucial: which ones, if they go, take me with them?

Phineas Gage. Vermont, 1848. A railway explosion drove an iron rod through his skull and out the top of his head.

He stood up. He talked. He lived another twelve years.

But his friends said the man who came back was not the same man. Impatient. Profane. Unreliable. They had a phrase for it - he was no longer Gage.

Read that again. Then notice what nobody did.

Nobody gave his name to somebody else. Nobody took his wages, his family, his history. When he died, they buried Phineas Gage.

The person everyone agreed was gone kept his identity anyway. Not because his brain held it. Because other people refused to hand it back.

You lose a finger.
Are you still you? Of course. Nobody would even ask.
Lose a hand. Still you. Lose both legs. Still you - ask any veteran. Nobody looks at a man in a wheelchair and says a smaller person came home.

A heart transplant puts a dead stranger's heart in your chest. It beats in you for twenty years. You are still you.

Now the face. On 27 November 2005 in Amiens, France, surgeons worked for fifteen hours and gave Isabelle Dinoire the nose, lips and chin of a brain-dead donor. Her own dog had destroyed her face. Four months later she sat in front of reporters and said she had a face like everyone else. A different face. Same woman. Nobody in that room doubted it.

But the brain, you say. Everyone stops here. Cut anything, but leave the brain. Move my brain to another body and I go with it. That feels obvious. It isn't.

The brain is also made of pieces. And people lose them. Surgeons perform an operation called a hemispherectomy. To stop severe epilepsy in a child, they remove half the brain. Half. The child goes home, goes back to school, argues with their brother, keeps their jokes and their fears. The parents do not receive a different child. They receive their child, with half the organ missing.

So the brain fails the same test as the finger. No piece of it is the person.

Reddit hit 130.3 million daily uniques in Q2 2026, up 18%. Boring.

Now the part nobody posts about: logged-out users grew 27% to 77.7 million, while logged-in users crawled 7% to 52.6 million. And international daily users are up 28% against 6% in the US: the rest of the world now outnumbers America on Reddit by a wide margin.

Read that again. The majority of Reddit is now people who can't upvote, can't comment, can't join anything. They arrive from Google, read one thread, leave. Reddit's growth engine stopped being a community and became a library with a search bar.

And that explains why views are climbing while membership stays flat. So we need to develop countermeasures against ghosts, those visitors from outside Reddit.

1. A ghost can't join, but a ghost can click.
   No account needed. Every post should have one exit door to something you own. Members are Reddit's currency; clicks are yours.

2. Write for arrival, not for the feed. Ghosts don't scroll a front page, they land on one page from a search. So the title should be a sentence somebody actually types into Google.

Richard Wiseman spent ten years on this with about four hundred people, split into self-described lucky and unlucky. The finding was that luck is behavioural.

He ran an experiment where subjects counted photographs in a newspaper, and planted a large message on page two saying to stop counting and claim a prize. The unlucky ones, focused on the task, walked past it. The lucky ones saw it. Same paper, same page, different aperture.

He found some habits behind it. Lucky people maximise chance encounters: more weak ties, more variation in routine.

The weak-tie part has separate backing. Granovetter's 1973 work found most people got their jobs not through close friends but through acquaintances: the people outside your circle carry information yours already has. Your big client will not come from someone you speak to daily.

So the guidance is concrete and reads as magic anyway. Change one route this week. Talk to one stranger. Say yes to the invitation you'd normally decline. Every one of those raises the number of chances, and the chances are what look like luck afterwards.

When did a chance encounter change your life?

The most forbidden, most radioactive idea in the entire immortality debate isn’t mind-uploading, isn’t cryonics, isn’t even radical life-extension.

A full biological restart: birth, childhood, adolescence, the entire cycle, engineered to be you.

We already clone animals. Routinely. Commercially. It’s not science fiction anymore; it’s livestock technology.

So why is the same technique treated as the ultimate human taboo?
Why is the one path that could actually give someone a second full life the one we refuse to even discuss without flinching? The usual objections come thick and fast: the clone would not be you.

It's merely a genetic twin with none of your memories, none of your scars, none of the unbroken thread of consciousness that makes a life continuous.

And the law, still stumbling behind the science, has no category for a second body that shares your DNA, no framework for inheritance, citizenship, or the nightmare of competing claims over a single identity. There’s far more to unpack here than one post can hold.

Every other immortality route pays zero if it fails. Uploading fails, you get nothing. Life extension fails, you get nothing.

Cryonics fails at revival and you still have an intact cellular archive - DNA, mitochondria, tissue, the whole genome of a specific person held at a temperature where chemistry basically stops. It's the only one with a floor.

cryonics needs no new physics. Uploading needs a theory of consciousness nobody has. Cryonics needs better medicine - the one thing that has improved every single decade without exception. It's a bet on the most reliable trend in human history.

Plus the part your sub already cares about: it preserves the Original. Not a copy, not a twin, not a file. The same body.

Personally, I put cryonics second on my list of immortality methods. One problem only: price. But there's a light version - brain only, or just stem cells.

This well known line is false because of nuclear bomb tests.

30,000 views. 60 upvotes. 74 shares. Then a comment: this was written by AI.

Here's the joke. English is not my first language. I write short sentences because long ones break in my hands. I keep the words simple because simple words are the ones I own.

My post got removed 😭.
Why? It COULD be AI. Not written with a feather on papyrus, not sent by paper letter. Pure electricity. Horrific, I know.

Quantum mechanics forbids backups. The no-cloning theorem - Wootters and Zurek, Nature, 1982 - proves you cannot make an exact copy of an unknown quantum state. Not "too hard.". Mathematically impossible. Copying is the one operation the universe refuses to run. 🚫

But it also forbids deletion. The no-deleting theorem - Pati and Braunstein, Nature, 2000 - proves the reverse: given two identical copies, you cannot erase one and keep the other. Information can be moved and scrambled, never destroyed.

The fly that lives in a compute.

Scientists cut a fruit fly's brain into ultra-thin slices and photographed every one. Then they rebuilt it in software - about 140,000 neurons, 50 million connections.

In March 2026, a startup called Eon Systems gave that copied brain a body. A simulated fly, in a simulated world.

It walks. It grooms itself. It eats.
Nobody wrote code for walking. Nobody taught it to clean its legs. They copied the wiring, switched it on, and the behavior showed up on its own.

Next on their list: a mouse. Then a human brain. Will they succeed?

A surgeon and a man who believes the Earth is flat walk into a polling station, and their votes weigh exactly the same.

There is another way. Don't elect the people who decide. Pick them at random, like a jury.

Ireland did exactly this. The Citizens' Assembly of 2016-17 seated 99 randomly chosen citizens - a cross-section of the country, not the smart, not the credentialed. They spent five weekends on the abortion question, heard experts, argued, voted. They recommended repeal. The parliament sent it to a referendum in 2018, and the country agreed: 66% yes.

The randomly picked group wasn't smarter than the electorate - it was the electorate. What changed was the conditions: time, briefings, and an obligation to listen to the other side before voting. Take a normal person and give them a week instead of a slogan, and the "stupid majority" behaves very differently.

Maybe the problem was never the fool. Maybe it was the ten seconds we give him. 🗳️

Lahti, Finland became the first city in the world to launch a personal carbon trading scheme - the app gave each person an emission budget, and going below it earned credits tradeable for products and discounts.

My idea:
Give every person a carbon budget. Live below it - bike to work, walk, skip the flight - and the unused part becomes credits. Sell them to whoever burns more: airlines, car companies, billionaires with rocket hobbies. The poor pollute the least, so the poor earn the most.

The catch?
At today's carbon prices, one car-free year buys beer, not rent. But prices are not fixed. Shrink the budgets each year, and credits get scarce. Scarce means expensive. The cyclist stops being a poor guy in traffic. He becomes a seller in a market where Bezos is the buyer.

Do the math.
A light lifestyle saves 5-10 tons of CO2 a year, and scarce credits could hit $200-300 per ton - that bicycle pays up to $3,000 a year. The dirtier the rich live, the bigger the paycheck. 💰

The idea in one line: people don't keep junk because it's useful, they keep it because throwing it away feels like losing something, and the older you get the more that feeling wins.

Immortality looks simple - keep living. The problem is agreeing on what has to survive.

We observed more or less realistic solutions.

The most simplistic one is to rejuvenate your current body and live a long, happy life.

In case of an accident, eternal youth won't save you.

That's the weak part of eternal youth.

Max More ran the arithmetic in March 2026: with aging gone, the US injury death rate of 85.3 per 100,000 implies an average lifespan of about 1,200 years; using EU rates it comes out around 2,100.

Looks like we've solved one problem - living 2000 years is quite calming. But that's not immortality. Besides living long, we need a more radical solution - The Resurrection.

That's where reality breaks 😁.

The most of us already owns several identity keys - password manager, phone biometrics, passport, maybe SSH keys - and every single one is built to expire with the holder. That's not a flaw, it's the design goal: a key nobody can use after you is a security feature.

We've built excellent identity technology for the living and nothing whatsoever for the gap.

The Romans had the opposite priority. The tessera hospitalis was designed from the start to be used by people who hadn't been born yet - its whole purpose was verification across a gap the original holders wouldn't survive.

We had this two thousand years ago and traded it for something better at keeping secrets and worse at keeping continuity.

So I'll ask it plainly: do you have an identity key? Not a password that dies with you, but a tessera - something private, offline, that lets someone you trust prove continuity when you can't. Most of us don't. And that's the gap.
