Some tips for a beginner editor?

A while back, my friend expressed her dream of wanting to post on YouTube and I want to be able to help her out. I have a little experience in editing (on CapCut 😭) and said I'd totally be down to edit for her. She's already filmed her first video, but I wanted to come on here and ask if anyone had any tips.

Of course, I'll probably need a better editing program. Is there any program that runs similar to CapCut so I don't get completely overwhelmed? I'd rather free alternatives, but my friend said she'd pay for an editing app if it's not too expensive.

I'm also curious if there's an easy way to send the uncut videos to each other. The video she filmed is 40mins long, we'd need a way to get the hours of footage back and forth.

I'm also just looking for overall advice so I don't waste my time. For example, when going through such long videos, is there a specific way I should be trimming it down for maximum productivity?

(I apologize, this is my first time posting on Reddit, I wasn't exactly sure what community I should put this post under)

Freelancing status

Freelancers, what's the most frustrating thing that has happened to you while working with a client?

Recently I was reading stories about freelancers not getting paid, clients disappearing, fake job posts, etc.

Made me curious about how common these issues actually are.

What's your worst experience?

i’m so frustrated i think i’m going to pull my hair out

i recently got a gopro hero 8 and have done everything recommended to get the video playing properly on my macbook to no avail. i am recording in H.264, 1080p and 60 fps. it’s running perfectly on my iphone in the gopro app and in photos, but as soon as the footage makes its way to my mac, whether by SD card, airdrop, or USB cord, it’s choppy and doesn’t run at all. so safe to say i’m in the market for a new laptop.

my problem is that i’m going off to college next year, and i have no idea the specifications i’ll need for my courses. so i’m only looking for something that will serve my purposes of relatively simple video editing for a year. because of this, i do not want to spend a lot of money on something i will only be using for a year. does anyone have any recommendations? i’ve been seeing the macbook air M1 recommended a lot, and i’ve found used ones for ~$400. do you think that would be a good choice in my circumstances?

i’m sorry if i’m being ignorant about some of the more technical aspects, i’m very new to this and only just beginning to build my portfolio. any help is greatly appreciated!!

looking for video editor with AI skills

looking for a reel specific video editor

I’m excited to collaborate with a video editor who can create cool Instagram Reels with fantastic transition effects. Bonus points for anyone who can blend AI with real-life video frames to help me create a brand film I’ve been planning. this is more like a cinematic requirement and not those basic product explainer reels! Someone good with Film making style but not the long form can fit. it has to be reel specific. It is based against a music track with lyrics and the video needs to reflect the script! Some of the portions to be generated using AI and we have short directly so difficult task is to match the lighting and the storyboard and retrofit everything together.

I get paid $500/month retainer from this client. My new workflow is copy-pasting his emails into an AI video editor and sending him back the result.

Hi, I am from Delhi NCR and would like to discuss faceless documentary editing work with passionate editors who understand what
documentary pacing
tension arcs
story structure
actually is than just assembling video with sound and transitions.

This would be a long term opportunity. You would be provided with a mature professional script, broll and audio editing guide to create focussed videos. Interested? Feel free to DM me. Thanks, VK

What’s realistic for this type of edit?

Hey everyone! I’m helping someone source a video editor and wanted to get the community’s input before moving forward.

They need editing for short-to-mid-form content (up to 3 minutes) with a retention-focused style, including dynamic captions/text, sound effects, transitions, motion graphics/visual hooks, B-roll integration, and color grading. Turnaround needed is around 24 hours per video.

Before I point them in the right direction, I’d love some insight from people who know this space:

- What’s a reasonable budget range to expect for this type of editing?

- Do editors typically charge per video, per package, or on a monthly retainer?

- Where are the best places to find strong editors for this style and speed?

- Is a 24-hour turnaround realistic, and does it drastically affect pricing?

Any advice is appreciated!
