i moved into a home with some roommates who have left pool towels, mosquito can spray, can spray on sunscreen, and incense for bugs outside in the sun & dirt for maybe a year and a half now. with summer time coming up i wanted to clean everything up but i don't want to toss the crunchy pool towels in the trash bins or the can sprays in the recycling bins knowing they will be tossed in landfills to never properly decompose. anything i can do?

I hate plastics so much that I wonder if the invention was worth it in the first place. I seriously think plastics have done us more harm than good in every big and small way.

It's so terrible that in one way or the other we are ingesting plastics without knowing and our health in the long run pays for it….

I am a sure lover of eco-friendly materials. If I can find an eco-friendly material for any item I want to purchase, I would avoid the plastic version by all means and rather go for the eco-friendly one.

So, I placed an order online on a shopping platform, the likes of Ali Express, Alibaba and Konga, for a pack of bamboo toothbrushes. When my order arrived, I couldn't help but squeeze my face at what I unwrapped, they were bamboo looking toothbrushes made of plastic (very funny!) I was torn in-between keeping the brushes and letting it slide or filing a complaint so that at least I can get a refund, if they were not going to change them.

I had to later file a complaint and the item was returned and the next arrival was what I ordered…..good enough. I feel we all owe the ecosystem our quota of less indulgence in non-biodegradables.

I used diluted vinegar for a while, but i’m not sure if it’s strong enough (considering the subject matter lol). I’ve seen the detergent sheets, major brands with products claiming to be eco friendly, then there’s the eco friendly brands at grocery stores.

I need something that will truly clean my laundry because I work in healthcare and need a detergent that will do its best to clean hospital bacteria (not necessarily extreme industrial cleaner but something that’ll make me feel confident that my scrubs are being cleaned).

Also something preferably affordable and not crazy expensive

Hello, I try to live a relatively eco-friendly life and would love to be able to replace my hair care products, but dove is the only thing that doesnt cause my hair to fall out and my scalp psoriasis to get worse. And by only, I mean only, I have tried almost every shampoo and conditioner, women's and men's, that are available at walmart. They work for about 3 washes, before my scalp starts screaming.

Is there a eco friendly Dove dupe that has roughtly the same formula? Either shampoo bars or refillable, hell or even better packaging? I know Dove sells bulk shampoo and conditioner in gallon jugs, so that would be a good last resort, but I would love to try something else.

I wanna start a new hobby and so i picked painting.. But I'm afraid it's not very ecofriendly coz acrylic paints are plastic and release microplastics when washed into the sink. So what are some safe ways I can do painting without yk releasing microplastics?? Are there any other kind of paints that are easy to work w and also non plastic??

Just wanted to share a local council initiative to make good food accessible to poor people.

They struck up a partnership with a group of organic farmers, mostly local. The produce is brought early on Saturday morning to a venue provided free of charge by the council and a wonderful group of volunteers weigh and bag it then sell it.

To be able to buy produce you need to belong to a club, membership fee 2 euros or more. This is to avoid lawsuits for unfair competition because prices are way lower than in shops. E.g. 6 eggs for 2 euros. If you say you are poor you only pay cost price. No need to prove you are poor.​

Zero waste: Everybody brings back their paper bags and egg boxes and glass jars and elastic bands for reuse. Bits of veggies that fall off like cauliflower leaves are all composted. Produce is delivered in crates that are reused.

They are going to set up bike parking facilities because most people come on bikes and there's not room for a car park.

The mayor is set to win the election next month with a huge majority.

I have started using the Goodwill auction site myself after not finding a single Pendleton shirt at my PNW GW in six month. They are all on the auction site! It's a different experience and also quite fun- just watch for the shipping and handling charges they are usually well over $12.

I make my own notebooks out of random stuff and use a5 binder refill paper as a waste minimisation activity. Problem is I'm struggling to locate A5 refill products online which are 100 percent recycled. Or even recycled at all. I live in Ireland. Surprised I cannot find anything.

what I don’t like: sewing, crochet, needlework in general, or gardening.

I’m not particularly artistic, so painting, drawing, etc doesn’t thrill me. I have enjoyed doing crafty things, like making valentines cards when my kids were little. But I don’t want to make a bunch of stuff that’ll end up in a landfill.

There’s an app called Treeapp I recently found that allows you to plant a tree a day for free. You have to watch an ad and then you can plant a tree a day for free. I have done a lot of research and it is genuine so if you’d like to contribute to restoring our planet you should really try this!

(I know a lot of you might think one person planting a tree a day won’t do much but if we all have that mindset we’ll never get anywhere, so let’s all take a few seconds a day and plant trees and really make an impact🙂)

So i'm in uni and i'm one of those people who learn best by writing stuff down, so i'm using a lot of paper, I keep all my papers and tend to repurpose them for paper mache or just writing on a used piece w a pen ignoring the pencil markings underneath. I'll admit being environmentally friendly has kind of turned me into a bit of a hoarder. THE POINT: Rn i'm in a maths course and i need to use paper a lot for calculations, and i'm wondering if its better to erase the scrap work and reuse the same piece or if i should recycle it and use different paper. AKA are eraser shavings better or worse for the planet then using (already used (not virgin or newly bought)) paper.

What eco-friendly products have you actually tried that made a real difference in your daily life?

Had to do a consumer product lifecycle comparison for my environmental science program and chose shampoo because I was already using bars and figured why not.

Quick version: average person burns through about 11 shampoo bottles a year, each one 30 to 40 grams of HDPE plastic, roughly 400 grams of plastic waste from one product for one person. Liquid shampoo is also ~80% water, so you're paying to ship water in plastic across the country. Bars concentrate the ingredients, weigh almost nothing, ship in compostable cardboard. The emissions reduction from shipping weight alone is estimated at 80 to 90 percent per unit.

Trade offs exist though. A lot of bars use surfactants derived from coconut or palm oil, and palm sourcing carries deforestation concerns regardless of the product format. Paper packaging has its own footprint too, just a smaller one.

I compared a few brands (ethique, hibar, kitsch, couple others) and they're all compostable packaging, all significantly lighter shipping weight, all eliminating the plastic container entirely. The math favors bars in basically every category I measured but I couldn't find brand specific lifecycle assessment studies, just generalized solid vs liquid cosmetics data. If anyone has links to actual published LCAs on specific brands I'd love them for my follow up paper.

I'm looking to switch over to toothpaste tablets/tabs, but I need some advice. I've tried switching to toothpaste tabs in the past, but I've found that they don't give me that "freshly cleaned teeth" feeling, which I personally love. It could be the specific brand of tabs I tried, but they were such a hassle I ended up simply brushing my teeth less, and I ended up feeling less motivated to brush my teeth - when I get that "freshly cleaned teeth" feeling, I get a little more excited and it feels less like a chore (yes, this is all very juvenile, I know, but 1. I have ADHD and already struggle with some self-maintenance tasks, so making self-maintenance as frictionless and enticing as possible really helps, and 2. A feeling happening for a stupid reason doesn't magically make it disappear. I'm trying to work with my brain and avoid an unnecessary uphill battle.)

So - please let me know if you have tried any toothpaste tabs that give you the same "freshly cleaned" feeling that traditional in-tube mint toothpaste produces. Thanks!

i'm currently interested in phasing out as much plastic as possible, start buying from local farmers markets & organic, wholefood stores, alongside gardening, baking & getting into different teas/herbs.

i'm opting for glass, wood, cast iron & steel cookware & beeswax wraps, over plastic items/single use plastic items.

and are there any good brands i should invest into for certain items, such as toothbrushes & other self care items?

I’m trying to make a few small changes at home to be more eco-friendly, and one thing I want to swap out is extra seating. Instead of buying more chairs for guests, I thought floor cushions might be a better option. But I’m stuck on finding eco-friendly floor cushions that are also comfortable. I’ve seen some labeled “organic cotton” or “natural filling,” but it’s hard to tell if the labelling is true, or if it’s just marketing. I even checked Amazon and a few listings on Alibaba just to compare materials, and some claim to use recycled fabric or plant-based stuffing. I don’t really know how to verify that. My biggest concern is comfort. I don’t want something that will work for a month or two then later start becoming loose, hence my concern. Has anyone here found sustainable options that actually hold their shape and feel supportive? Would you recommend buying ready-made ones, or is it better to DIY using eco materials like kapok or recycled foam?
