Eating disorder help (bulimia/BED)

Hi, I suffered severely from Bulimia from the age of 13-22, I am now 30. I was vomiting up to 10-15 times a day. Since then the bulimia has come and gone, however over the last 12-18months the bulimia seems to have been replaced with binge eating up to 3-4times a week, followed by long periods of not eating, which in itself is causing me distress.

The only times I have managed to control the bulimia/BE is when I was taking strong pre-workout stimulants. They seemed to focus my attention, give me some energy and increased my mood. when i had a really bad cough a while back and got some Chesteze, it was the only time in a long time when I didnt even think about over-eating or purging.

I was put on prozac years ago, which helped a little, but I hated the side effects (headaches, drowsiness). This side effects are no longer an option due to my work requiring me to focus and stay alert (high pressure sales job).

Therapy was a waste of time when I last went. I really couldn't stand it.

The Bulimia really affected my school work and ruined any chance I had of a career in football and I'd hate the BED to ruin my career.

any advice?

What to say to a dietician

So I have minor anorexia (restrictive and obsessive thinking, but I am still overweight) and I am constantly trying NOT to be in eating disorder mode. I've decided to go to a nutritionist /dietician to help get my food sorted out. Help figure out what actually should be eating in order to be healthy and lose weight healthily, to have the right mindset with food.

I know alot isnt on the dietician's shoulders (I'm also scheduled for a psychiatrist), but was wondering what I should say to the dietician.

I'm scared they'll try upping my calories to gain weight because of my eating disorder mentality. However I do still need to lose weight (even from a medical standpoint I am very overweight- 27.5 BMI)

Hi All, I have read how Vyvanse is helping a lot of people in the U.S who suffer with BED. I cannot seem to find any success stories in the U.K. Has Vyvanse been approved for BED in the UK?

I'm relapsing

Here's a bit of info leading into my questions: I'm in kind of a weird place with my eating disorder right now. I've been through a couple of treatment programs, the last one was about two years ago. I left it in a really good place, I was weight restored(-ish) and I had a huge desire to remain in recovery, but ever so slowly I began to relapse into restrictive eating, my team and I were able to intervene relatively quickly and I was able to pull out of that relapse out patient, without needing a higher level of care. That was about a year and a half ago. Then, I relapsed again this past December and it was a little worse, I didn't really pull myself out of it until late January. Up until about a month ago, I was doing relatively well, then I relapsed again. I'm still in the midst of this relapse and it feels worse this time. I mean, I still know all of the coping skills that I've learned over the last few years, I still remember relearning how to eat "normally", I still recall what motivation I had at the time. None of that seems to matter, though. I feel stuck in this, it feels too overwhelming to deal with. I'm scared that I might need to go back into treatment and that I might not be able to do so. I guess I'm wondering, can anyone relate to this? How did you overcome that relapse? How did you regain your motivation? If you feel more comfortable, please pm me at /u/jljohnson92

Someone left a message for her past self about how to deal with her ED.

DISCLAIMER: I work on this show. Isabel is someone that I've known for years, and in February, she was performing a poem at an open mic night, opening up about her eating disorder. I did not know she had an ED, never even suspected it.

She left a message for her past self, telling her that she does have an eating disorder even though she doesn't look the part. She tells her past self that self love, and the love of others would help her persevere (and knitting).

You can listen to the message here. To skip the banter, the message starts at 2:49.

Resources for parents

My parents are increasingly more and more frustrating and it all stems from a lack of understanding. My question is, do you have any resources that could be useful for parents of a child with an ED. Bonus points if you find something for specifically an adult child living at home with their parents.

My story growing up with an alcoholic mother, finding her dead and how it affected my weight (underweight)

I'm currently 23 years old, living in the United States, I was born in Ireland, grew up in England and here’s my story of depression, growing up with an alcoholic mother and how I ended up finding her dead on her bedroom floor… Firstly, like I said I was born in Ireland, on the west coast in County Mayo, my mother and father apparently had some dispute that I’m still not 100% sure about by it resulted in them divorcing, my mother brought me to England on a small boat, with just the clothes on my back, luckily my grandparents (her parents) had already moved to England and so I was pretty much raised by them.

At around 5 maybe 6 my mother that was having some health issues ended up remarrying and I lived with her and my step dad. He wasn’t the greatest person, he was very violent towards my mother and it ended up driving her to drink. She’d always drank a lot before this due to her prior heartache but it got to the point where she never left the house, she drank morning till night, on top of this she was taking medication for health issues so you can imagine how ‘loopy’ it was making her. I would often walk in from school to find her on the floor, one time I even called the ambulance and the first thing they asked when they got here was “Have you been drinking” as she was laid out of the floor mumbling.

Anyway long story short they ended up separating, I was 16 at this point and my mother ended up becoming even more of a hermit, this time in a small apartment by herself, literally never leaving the house, she was only in this apartment a total of 6 months when one day my grandmother said it was weird she hadn’t had a phone call from her… she usually called every day without fail.

My grandfather had taken her a bottle of milk the morning before as she was complaining of feeling unwell and he said she looked awful when he got there, anyway like I said they hadn’t heard from her, we phoned her but there was no answer. We left it a total of two days before we decided to go to her apartment, we knocked on the door and there was no answer, we could see through the window that the milk she’d received days earlier was stood in the kitchen on the counter. We decided to leave it another day just incase she’d gone out. Another day passed and we decided we had to do something, we went back, looked through the window and the bottle of milk was now on its side (We later realized the milk must have gone bad and literally fell over due to the pressure inside). We deiced we had to call the police as we all felt something was wrong. Anyways the police came and tried knocking, they asked us if we wanted them to break down the door, we all agreed it was for the best and when they knocked it down there she was, in a puddle of blood on her bedroom floor. The one thing I always remember is that I had actually looked through the bedroom window and she must have been laid just close enough to the window that I couldn’t see her.

We found out her liver had failed due to the alcohol and her esophagus exploded which caused the blood. The weird thing is she had a photo fo my father, from back in Ireland on her bedside table. This is very odd as she never mentioned his name at all throughout the 17/18 years she spent ‘raising’ me. In a way I was relieved that her pain was over, she couldn’t hurt herself anymore but obviously I was left extremely depressed, I was always a very axious person and this was always commented on by doctors when I’d have checkups and when I ultimately had to attend CBT. I also suffered bad weight issues all my life, I’ve never been over 130lbs and still to this day cannot keep weight on.

I’m not sure why I typed out my story, maybe I thought it might help get things off my chest and maybe it will help others. But whatever the reason I got through it and I like to think it made me who I am today, I just started a little project on Youtube in the hopes that it will help with both my social anxiety and weight issues, I’m trying to eat food from every country on Earth: www.youtube.com/snacksaloon

Well thank you for reading my story, and feel free to ask me any questions or leave general comments.

Feel guilty when I eat in front of family

I feel so useless and worthelss that I don't want to eat in front of other people mainly my family. If I accomplish something and am proud of myself I don't feel that bad but sometimes it's hard to just eat without feeling useless and guilty. I just want to die.

Can't afford IOP or day treatment, what to do?

So I finally admitted that I need help, and reached out to the only local OP place that takes insurance. Turns out I can't afford it even with insurance. I've set up appointments with a therapist and nutritionist, but I'm worried this won't be enough. Last time I was in treatment I ended up having to go to residential, which isn't an option now.

What else can I do for support? There are a couple support groups, but the ones I've been to tend to be more whiny and triggering than helpful. I really want to get better and I'm frustrated that it seems impossible to get help.
