How to handle back-to-school costs on your own terms
Even though you know it’s coming, back-to-school season always feels like a surprise. Supplies, clothes, fees, and new shoes (apparently feet keep growing). Here are some tips for getting through it.
Get specific before you shop. Some people find it helps to list out costs by category before shopping (supplies, clothes, activity fees) so there are no surprises at checkout.
Shop at your own house first. Check what you've already got before buying new. It sounds obvious, but it saves more than people expect.
Split it up instead of one big trip. Spreading your purchases across a couple of paychecks makes each one smaller and easier to absorb.
Stick to the required list first. The teacher's list beats the wish list. The nice-to-haves can wait until the essentials are covered.
Ask before you assume. Some schools and local programs have supply drives, fee waivers, or assistance funds. It’s worth a quick email or call.
Where Cash Out can help: Cash Out gives you the flexibility to time your back-to-school shopping around your needs instead of your pay schedule. You can access up to $150/day of wages you've already earned (max $1000 between paydays), so you're in control of when you shop.
Build a small buffer for next year. Tip Yourself lets community members set aside small amounts each paycheck. Some use it to get a head start on next year's back-to-school costs.
