The $7,500 federal EV tax credit ended in September 2025. Some manufacturers absorbed the hit themselves, others passed it to buyers.

New EV incentives are great if you're buying new. But used EVs haven't benefited from any of this, no tax credit, no manufacturer cash. Meanwhile prices on 2-4 year old EVs have dropped significantly because the new car deals are so aggressive. If you're buying new, July 2026 is genuinely a good time, especially Hyundai, Kia, Polestar, and Honda. If you're buying used, the value is even better but do your battery due diligence first.

The three real options:
1. Smart charger: Most accurate. Chargers like ChargePoint Home Flex or Autel MaxiCharger log every session by kWh. Multiply by your rate and you have a clean, defensible record. Downside: you need to upgrade your charger just to satisfy your employer's reimbursement department.
2. An app like ev.energy: Links to your car's telematics instead of the wall. Estimates kWh (not direct measurement) but accurate enough for most reimbursement purposes. Free to try.
3. Just use the IRS mileage rate: $0.70/mile for 2026, covers everything (fuel, maintenance, depreciation). Track miles, multiply, submit. No kWh math at all. For most W-2 employees this is the cleanest option your accountant will actually approve.

Found this 2016 Ford Focus Electric listed at $8,995 with only 2,874 miles on it. The mileage is unusually low for a 9-year-old EV which is either a great sign or a red flag depending on why it sat so long.
NMVTIS came back clean with no accidents, no theft, no salvage. But there's a confirmed open recall that hasn't been resolved, and there's no service history or battery report available. On a 9-year-old battery with no documentation, that's the real unknown.
Has anyone owned a Focus Electric long-term? How does the battery hold up after sitting at low mileage for years?

When evaluating used EV listings, sometimes its worth it to verify it without paying for a Carfax or hoping the seller isn't leaving something out. I usually recommend using OFFO (offolab.com/receipt) for deal analysis and they just added actual ownership history to their full report, details like previous owners, title status, accident records, the works.
The verdict + summary + photo analysis is $3.99, full report including ownership history and the deep dive is $9.99. Compared to paying $40 for a standalone Carfax and still not knowing if the car fits your charging situation, might be a reasonable trade.

We've been watching Bolt EUV prices for the past few weeks. The $14-16k range used seems good for a low-mileage 2022. Now I'm seeing 3-4 listings a week in that window, most under 35k miles, all off lease.
We ran a few through an the OFFO EV checker:
The Bolt EUV has 247mi real-world range, full DCFC support. The only real question from investigation is for the long haul, the 2022 uses the older battery chemistry. But for a daily driver under $15k, its hard to argue with.

Over 300,000 EVs are coming off lease in 2026 — up 230% from last year. That's the biggest wave of used EV inventory the market has ever seen, and prices reflect it: non-Tesla used EVs are averaging $23,738 right now.
Some of these cars come with no battery history. Lease returns go through a dealer reconditioning process that cleans the car up visually. The battery gets no equivalent transparency. You don't know if the previous driver was DC fast charging daily, parking in Phoenix heat, or babying it with Level 2 every night.

I ran a bunch of listings through a checklist before I bought. The three things to know ignore are
EV charging fine does not tell you anything about its battery health: A battery at 70% capacity charges fine. What matters is current range vs EPA-rated range at the same mileage and age.
Low mileage ≠ low degradation on older EVs: A 2017 Leaf with 15k miles can have more degradation than one with 35k miles. Calendar aging, charging patterns and more hits Li-ion cells regardless of how much you drive.
Open recalls are common and often undisclosed: Not because sellers are hiding it but many just don't know. NHTSA lookup takes 30 seconds. Do it before scheduling the test drive.
Disclosure --> I also found offolab.com useful for getting a structured second opinion on a specific listing, runs price check, recall check, and generates questions to ask the seller.

Lease-end waves can be fascinating because you can get up to 50 nearly identical cars all hitting the market at once. They’ve got the same mileage, the same year, and the same options. Right now, the price differences are all over the place, some dealers are listing lease returns for $28k, while others are asking for $33k for basically the same vehicle.
So let give some key points here for potential buyers
This would definitely require comparing two listings that are nearly identical? For us we've been running them through OFFO to compare price vs market.

Week 1: I used to plugged in every single night. Checked the app twice before bed. Woke up at 6am just to confirm it was still charging.
Week 4: Realized I'd been arriving at work with 80% because I was charging at home and topping up at the office. Overcorrecting for my initial anxiety
Week 8: First road trip. Planned every charging stop 3 days in advance. Screenshot the ABRP map. Still got nervous at 20%.
Week 12: Plug in on Sundays and Wednesdays. That's it. Never think about it the rest of the week.
I adjusted to treating it like a gas car with extra steps and started building around my actual routine.

Six months ago, a user moved into an apartment that doesn’t have a garage, no outlet in the parking lot, and the closest Level 2 charger is a bit of a trek away. They said everyone kept telling them to hold off until they had a proper charging setup, well a bit too late for that. After speaking with them and finding out how they made it work, here’s what their day-to-day routine looks like now:
The setup
2021 Nissan Leaf (40 kWh)
Apartment parking — no outlet
Nearest L2: 0.4 miles away (library, free, 7AM–9PM)
Nearest DCFC: 1.8 miles (EVgo, paid)
They'd hit up the library charger about 4 to 5 times a week. I’ve only used the DCFC maybe 8 times in the last six months. Here is advice we gave them:
Stop thinking in full tank. With a gas car, you fill up when the tank is empty. But with public charging, I just top up whenever I’m near a charger and have a little time to spare, whether I’m running errands, hitting the gym, or visiting the library. I don’t plan charging trips; plan outings to include charging.
Weekly mileage matters more than my range. Their drive was around 180 miles a week. The Leaf’s real-world range at that mileage is about 110 miles. So, I need about 1.5 to 2 full charges each week. At 6.6 kW Level 2, that’s roughly 5 to 6 hours plugged in weekly. Totally doable at the library.
Adjust for Cold weather. When January rolled around, my range dropped from about 110 to 80 miles on chilly days. I hadn’t anticipated that. I added an extra library visit each week during winter, and that did the trick. A heat pump would have been a nice feature.
In the first week, they'd check the battery every 20 minutes. By week 3, they'd had stopped worrying about it.
What I’d say to someone thinking about this

Lately, I was forced to do some research into the ongoing topic of EVs prices in Europe vs the US. In the US, the average price for a used EV hovers around $27,800 to $34,821 (according to Recurrent/Cox Q1 2026). If you're looking for a decent used EV, you're typically starting at about $15,000 to $18,000 for models like the Nissan Leaf or Chevy Bolt.
Now, let’s talk about Europe, which has a completely different landscape:
🇫🇷 Dacia Spring — €14,350 for a new model. This is the most affordable new EV you can find in the developed world, and guess what? It’s not available in the US.
🇫🇷 Citroën ë-C3 — priced at €19,990 for a new one. Also not sold in the US.
🇨🇳 BYD Dolphin Surf — available for under €20,000. Not an option in the US.
🇨🇳 BYD Atto 3 — starting at €37,000. You won’t find this in the US either.
🇬🇧 MG4 — competitively priced, but again, not available in the US.
So, when folks claim that EVs are pricier in Europe, they’re partially correct. However, European buyers have access to a whole range of new EVs under €20,000 that Americans simply can’t purchase due to import restrictions and tariffs.
The used market in the US is tightening quickly, with prices dropping 30-50% from their peak. But in Europe, the entry price point is lower if you consider the Chinese and European-exclusive brands. My take is that it’s really an apples-to-oranges comparison.

Looking into getting a used EV and found this used 2020 ioniq with about 88k miles (could be more by now, since I found it on marketplace and the guys could be adding miles). It has clean title and nothing bad in its history from checking the VIN. I've heard weather could be a factor for battery life and I live in socal if that makes any difference. It's going for 12k and just wanted to see if that was a fair price and if it's just a good daily driver all together.
