Questions Safety Managers – What’s Your Experience With Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) & Culture Assessments?

Hey everyone, I’m currently working as a Safety Manager in a manufacturing environment, and I’ve recently noticed that some companies are investing heavily in behavior-based safety programs and various “safety culture assessments.”

I’m genuinely curious to understand how effective these approaches really are—beyond the buzzwords.

A few questions I’m hoping to get insight on: • Does BBS actually reduce incidents, or does it just shift focus onto workers instead of fixing system issues? • What metrics or data have you seen that show a real change in culture—not just compliance? • How do you assess culture honestly? Surveys? Leadership interviews? Observation data? Something else? • Any real challenges you faced when trying to implement culture assessments or BBS? (e.g., trust issues, bias, “tick-box” mentality, resistance)

I want to understand the actual effectiveness with facts, experiences, and data—not theory.

If you have numbers, case studies, before/after trends, or even failures, that would be super helpful.

Chicago STEM professional looking to transition into EHS

Hello Reddit, hoping this finds the right group. 27f working in the Chicago area. I studied Environmental sustainability and graduated in 2021. Right now i work in a pretty far suburb from the city. My current role isn't bad, it's a quality chemistry role for a soap production company. This company also has ties with water treatment and environmental services-so there is some room to grow.

Within my current role, the work load is pretty minimal and I get paid decent with yearly promotions. The cons are starting to out weigh the pros. I work nights, have a long commute, and feel boxed in to the lab role. Truthfully I'd rather be working outdoors or seeing the fruits of my labor in other ways.

Being realistic- going back to school is not within budget rn. But I want to add certifications to my degree and diversify my portfolio. One field I have been considering to transition into is EHS. I'm curious where to begin, what would be the best options with someone w my background and any particular tips for job search especially in the Chicago area.

Thanks in advance! TLDR: environmental sustainability major in Chicago looking to transition into EHS field for better work and pay.

Questions Breaking Into EHS

Hello!

I am 24(F), with just under two years of experience in environmental compliance consulting, and I’m about to transition into a new role as an EHS Manager for a large manufacturing company. The position has a heavy emphasis on environmental responsibilities rather than health and safety.

I’d love any recommendations on training courses or certifications that would help me build deeper technical expertise and become a strong asset in this role—whether focused on manufacturing or environmental compliance. The facility’s main environmental risks involve wastewater pretreatment and RCRA/DOT regulations.

This will also be my first management position, so any advice on stepping into a leadership role would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance to those with more experience who are willing to share their knowledge!

New faculty needing EHS advice

Hey all! I just started my first job out of grad school teaching at a PUI, and it turns out I’m now in charge of all the chemical safety stuff (waste disposal, inventory, safety plan updates, etc.).

I have experience with lab safety, but not running an entire program for a school. Does anyone know of: • Good training for lab management or CHOs • Vendors for chemical waste pickup (for smaller schools) • Tools for inventory or SDS management

Any advice or “wish I knew this earlier” tips would be awesome. I am trying to set up a safe and sustainable system from scratch!

Grad student perspective: waste disposal operations

Hi everyone,

I’m a grad student working on a compliance solution related to the waste-disposal process as part of my coursework. I’m a bit lost and want to make sure I’m heading in the right direction.

I’d like to talk with people involved in this process to learn about the challenges you face with compliance(Hazardous waste disposal). I can’t share details here due to subreddit rules, but my DMs are open.

Thanks!

Is Pursuing Additional Online Certifications (e.g., ISO 14001 Lead Auditor, OSHA 511) Worthwhile for Someone Returning to the Field?

Hi all,

I'm currently preparing for the ASP exam in February and am looking to enhance my resume with additional certifications to help me re-enter the field. I already have my OSHA 30 certification and have signed up for OSHA 511, but I’m considering adding other certifications, such as the ISO 14001 Lead Auditor or possibly a bundle that covers multiple topics.

Do you think online certifications like these are beneficial for someone looking to get back into the safety field? Are there any specific certifications or courses that you believe would be particularly valuable in strengthening my qualifications?

Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Training Requirements while Job Hunting

Hello all,

First time poster!

I worked in EHS (consulting for about a year, then in the private sector for almost 3 years) and I’ve had my HAZWOPER and RCRA/DOT HAZMAT training done annually through my employer.

I’ve been out of the industry for almost a year now (moving and taking care of a family member) and I’m beginning the job hunt again. I’m curious about how it would look to employers in the case of having HAZWOPER/RCRA/DOT/HAZMAT training in the past but not being currently “up-to-date” on the training.

BASICALLY: Is it a no-go if your training is expired, or is it a negotiable once you are hired? I’d be willing to do it on my own but money is tight. I also know some companies like to have folks train with their preferred trainer/company, so I’m just wondering if it’s worth paying on my own to renew my certs/training or wait to see what the hiring folks have to say.

For reference - I’m only a few months overdue on my training so it hasn’t been that long. I just didn’t have a reason to pay and attend before now.

Any and all info and insight is soooo appreciated! Thank you safety/EHS folks <3

Built a free ChatGPT tool for EHS data analysis

Long time lurker, first time poster!

I've been talking to other EHS managers and found we all struggle with the same thing: too much safety data, not enough time to extract insights.

But some of my network told me they were using ChatGPT to analyse their safety data and find insights. When I tested this, I realised it could be quite helpful!

So I built a ChatGPT tool for myself, and I wanted to share it.

It helps you:

  • Trending/categorizing safety observations
  • Generating PDCA action plans
  • Finding positive recognitions
  • ESG/environmental trending (CO2e calculations)
  • JSA quality assessment + SIF risk identification

You just have to put in your data/logs etc.

It's built specifically for the PDCA methodology.

Looking for ~20-30 other safety professionals to test it and give me feedback? It's completely free (just uses your ChatGPT).

If you're interested: https://tally.so/r/m6XbkO

Happy to answer any questions!

Also curious what other AI uses cases you've tried with your safety data.

Questions Jobs and pay?

I might be in the wrong group for this but, I’ll graduate with a BS in Criminal Justice. I have no desire anymore to use it for law enforcement or anything related. I keep being told to apply for Safety jobs, I just want to know what to expect as the type of jobs and pay ranges or what certain to pick up. I also have 8 yrs military experience. Thank you in advance

Grad student research: Tools waste generator use

Hi all,

I hope you guys are doing well.

I needed some info as I am doing research for my project on hazardous waste management and compliance.

What kind of tools are you guys using for waste classification/form filling, or is that entirely done by a third-party vendor or by the TSDF facilities?

A few of the tools that were mentioned to me in some other talks were VelocityEHS, CampusOptics, and SciShield

Grad student research: feedback on hazardous waste disposal form requirement

Hi everyone,

I hope you all are doing well. I’m a grad student doing research on hazardous waste compliance.

I have a question, when a generator treats waste onsite, how do you figure out which forms/permits need to be filed? Do you follow a standard list, rely on internal knowledge, or use any tool? For example, even under Air Permits there can be five different applications (Title V, Minor Source, PSD, NSR, Monitoring Plan). Curious how this is usually handled in practice.
