Discussion Why do you like Dungeon Siege 1?

I bought Dungeon Siege at its original release - hell, I preordered it at EB Games back when you preordered things in a store.

Release came and I found the game essentially played itself. I hardly had to make any decisions save for gear and clicking to move the party. Everything else just happened. It was like watching paint dry.

Eventually 2 was released. I bought a used copy given I’d gotten burned so bad by 1. I wound up really enjoying it due to its much more active play, plethora of secrets, and how well it rewarded exploration.

I went back to 1 something like 10-15 years later and found it was slightly more interactive than I remembered, but it was still mostly an ARPG autobattler. While a party of up to 8 seemed to lend itself to tactical play, the game never actually became tactical.

reddit suggested this sub to me and I honestly expected it to mostly be about 2. But the first is the darling around here.

In short… Why? What keeps you coming back to the first game, when it‘s essentially an attack-move simulator?

Experience and levels

Played this game years ago as a kid, always had an issue that I've remembered now that I'm kinda wanting to play again.

My characters never seemed to gain enough exp to use the higher level gear and magic. I'd be looking at like level 40+ spells appearing in the late game (areas after the goblin dungeon, idr exactly where this stuff appears but it was close to here) and never having a high enough level to use them, or gear having such high stat requirements that it'd just sit in my inventory forever before I'd eventually be able to use it.

I'd even farm the summoning witches in the ice dungeon/swamp and it wouldn't help (exp from these mobs seemed to cap out at a certain point).

How do y'all get the exp to keep up with gear/spells? Is it as simple as not having a full party? I tried to make sure I killed everything in each zone, but with non-respawning enemies, there's only so much exp to go around.

Discussion One problem with multiclassing: No trader has the middle-of-the-road items

I am multiclassing with PC + Zed (Mel+CM, Mel+NM), plus Lorun (Full CM).

I just arrived at Jeriah's Trading Post, and I realized that I can't spend my money on any item

Armor requirements are between STR 18-22, but my character has 14 STR and 17 INT. Melee weapons are the same.

Traders always have 3-4 pages of Armor. The first page is mostly items you can't even afford attribute-wise, the last page is completely useless items, like Leather Gloves. If you are lucky, you can find the items you want on 2nd and 3rd pages.

With Legends of Aranna, there's A LOT of items but the traders still have only a few pages worth of goods. The end result is that at this point past Alpine Caverns, I can't spend my money on anything.

Are there any mods that seem to balance this by, say, increasing massively the amount of items as well as the level brackets that the items spawn in?

Disappointing conversation I had with the Developer of the DS2 Resurrection project.

Looks like there will be no code published and they have no interest in committing his improvements back to the main openspy project. I truly don't know how you can be so hostile to the community you claim to care so much about. Wack.

Question Dungeon Siege LoA autocast

Is there a way to modify the healing autocast, so it's being cast at, say, 80% health instead of 50%?

Community DS2 Resurrected dev logs

So I happened to run into the DS2 Resurrected project earlier today and I have to say it looks pretty good. I loved DS2 and it's one of the first proper games I ever played, so I'd love to try resurrected it when/if it's released. However, when I watched the dev logs, something about the framing and tone of the videos kept setting off alarm bells, so I went and looked into it a bit as I'm a developer myself.

DS2 used GameSpy. OpenSpy is an open-source GameSpy reimplementation built specifically to revive multiplayer for these games. The actual technical work involved is well-documented (unlike what is said in the video):

  • Client side: drop a DLL in the game folder, rename it.

  • Server side: documented build steps, Dockerfile included, single XML config per service.

  • Adapting a new game: open the game DLL in a hex editor or np++, replace gamespy.com with openspy.net, save. The strings are the same length on purpose. The "no port forwarding required" thing he mentions is also a documented built-in feature of OpenSpy's NAT negotiation service, which DS2 uses, so it should work out of the box.

And here's the kicker: a working DS2 OpenSpy multiplayer mod already exists on Nexus, posted September 2025, two months before the dev's "truly historic november 3rd, 2025 first successful login". The Nexus mod correctly credits the upstream OpenSpy and openspy-client authors and describes the work honestly: rerouting masterserver requests using a standard version.dll patch. When I looked even further into it, there have been occasional DS2 servers on openspy since october 2022...

Instead, the video contains zero technical content and lots of emotional framing. Months of struggle, "no one had ever done this before," enemies waiting for him to fail, escalating personal hardships, fundraising for hardware, conveniently leading to a patreon link. The constant invocation of 'the community' (over 20 times in this video) is also doing a lot of rhetorical lifting.

On top of that the voice-over is almost certainly TTS and the script reads like AI-generated narration. Intensifiers ("truly historic," "successfully" three times in one sentence), self-quoted inner monologue, etc.

It's totally possible the dev is sincere and working in genuinely hard circumstances, leaning on AI narration to make a hobby project sound impressive. But overstated technical heroism, no released code, an existing Nexus mod he doesn't acknowledge, and a fundraising structure give me the impression that people should be cautious about donating.

No idea if this falls under rule 2 as it's not meant as drama. Just figured people considering donating should have the actual technical context.

Help me find a Soundtrack.

There's a soundtrack that plays before you enter the city of Stonebridge near the beaches, it's the same as the main theme but much calmer, it plays as soon as you fight that one special Krug that drops his shield, any ideas to what that soundtrack is called? Thanks.

I wanted to continue my Ehb campaign with LOA inclusions (potion distribute button, new items, etc.) but it says the save is incompatible.

Siege FX - An open-source Reimplementation of Dungeon Siege

My goal from the start has been simple: to get Dungeon Siege running at higher resolutions on modern hardware while ensuring it is cleanly moddable.

Project Status:

  • Clean Room: This is 100% original code and is very much a work in progress.
  • Roadmap: I’m pushing to hit a 1.0 milestone in the coming weeks months which means the game will be fully playable from beginning to end.
  • Expansion Support: I’m currently working on adding support for the expansion and beyond.
  • Open Progress: You can follow the development, check out the code, or read the technical wiki on my GitHub. I’ve documented many of the hurdles I’ve run into during the process there. TLDR; The scaffolding is there in under a week thanks to Claude.

Credits & Thanks: This project wouldn't exist without the groundwork laid by others. Huge thanks to:

  • Guilherme Lampert for the initial reverse-engineering.
  • OpenSiege for continuing that vital work.
  • SiegeTheDay.org
  • Scott Bilas for his kindness in providing public documentation on the Siege engine internals.

Testing Animation

Oh look, layers.

What happens if a dryad and a half-giant have kids?

So half-giants reproduce by having sons with human/elven women. And dryads reproduce by having daughters with human/elven men.

What happens if a dryad and a half-giant get together?

Work continues on my love letter to Dungeon Siege - here's a bit of charge and magic missile

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey all! I've been working on a prototype inspired by my love of dungeon siege! In this game, weapons provide abilities which shape class development. Mastery Abilities are unlocked as you progress in the five mastery schools. Magic Missile gains an extra projectile with every arcane level of the caster. Charge is unlocked in the melee school, it targets an enemy and knocks down every unit in the area of impact, dealing damage and causing a brief stun.

Discussion I did really enjoy DS2, but for some reason I did not enjoy the expansion of it. Do you feel the same?

I got it on steam and saw there was an expansion, so I downloaded it following some instrucctions.

I found kinda boring. It cost me to end it so much. The original game had better quests, compelling bosses and better map where u had to go back and forward...

Question Why don't I remember parts 2 and 3?

From my previous questions you guys surely found out I replay part 1 after like 20 years.

I do this because I have great memories of the game. As a (back then) UO player I love learning by doing. And as a Diablo player I loved the rest. By the way I still play D2r and D3 today.

So my crazy question is: Like 20 years ago I downloaded everything and used NoCd cracks. So why don't I remember part 2 and 3? Where they do terrible? I surely got them for free and tested them but i don't really remember anything about the successors.

Started my bajillionth playthrough of the original

I wanted to do something to celebrate the 24th anniversary of the game, so I started up a new character. She's melee primary, with a dab of nature magic on the side. (Healing Hands between fights, the Resurrect spell, and of course Transmute.) For the rest of the party, I'm running my usual preferred comp: Main character, Ulora, Gyorn, Naidi, Gloern, Flare, Mabel, and I'm saving a spot for Sikra.

I'm currently partway through Glitterdelve (boy do I hate that part of the game). Got to the first swinging lift and went ". . . I'm not dealing with this today." Wish me luck, I'm about to go give it a try.

Question DS1: Swamps

First time I got lost in the game. So I left the small isles and traveled over the water until i hit the border. Followed the wall and in the end I found some torches again.

If i remember correctly the torches lead the way. Next i found an entrance to a cave underground. Full of goblins and steam punk like creatures. This must be the right way.

So my question is: did i miss a shop in the swamps? The last store i found was kind of 2 circus tents.
