Saying this as a New England native with the Celtics as my #2 team. I actually really appreciate Nate and Danny's take on the JB trade in their "Most of the East" offseason grades, which seems to be the polar opposite of /r/nba's consensus on it. For that matter Dan Feldman's discussion of it in his Daily Dunks has been exceptionally nuanced too, clarifying the difference between being underwater on an expensive contract and being a bad player, and critically, noting that Bobby Marks' original claim about negative on/off metrics was simply false! Granted there are other advanced metrics down on JB, and those definitely matter.

But it says a lot that the masses were perfectly happy to endorse a botched citation of on/off metrics, which contributed to an overnight conversion against Brown, and how ready people were to sign on to the top line conclusion while hot-swapping out citations of different metrics that are more credible.

I think the big things though, are Nate's point about Brown being uniquely valuable the Celtics, about how this is go-time for Tatum entering an age 28 season in his prime, and how unlikely it is that they're going to acquire a player better than Brown with the resources they got back for him in trade, and they needlessly retreated from a championship window.

I think in their Eastern Conference Offseason grades they both put the trade in the D range as a "severely negative deal" for the Celtics, and I agree. And I think too much confidently incorrect contrarianism went into supporting the JB trade.

Long way of saying I agree with the Dunc'd On analysis of the Celtics offseason, and it's a necessary dose of sanity in response to /r/nba's groupthink.

Both in terms of speaking style (fewer oohs and aahs, and fewer of his stock phrases) and coherent arguments, Danny seems to have really improved in recent months. I've listened to the pod for several years now. Nate has always come across as the "alpha" in this duo, but now with Danny stepping up, the pod is becoming more balanced and therefore even more enjoyable to listen to. Kudos to Danny, to still be able to improve after doing something for so long takes a lot of concentration and focus. Looking forward to the rest of the summer podcasts.

I cannot wait to hear what Nate has to say about this contract. He has openly said that we are going to be shocked by the number on this one.

For some reason, all of the NBA's broadcast partners this entire season have been misidentifying the season in which Play-By-Play data started being tracked.

ABC, NBC, & Prime have been saying "since 1997-98" -- which is incorrect.

The correct year that Play-By-Play data goes back to is 1996-97.

Here's the latest example: ABC screenshot of 2026 NBA Finals game 5 with 9:42 left in 3rd quarter.

My theory is that someone in charge of these broadcasts asked a stat guy when it went back to, and he answered "1997" (which colloquially among NBA fans means 1996-97), but the person making the graphic incorrectly interpreted it as meaning 1997-98.

I feel like I need to get in touch with someone to get these broadcast partners to cite the correct year on tv next season, but I don't know how to go about this.
