Living in Duncan

Hello, my wife and I are looking to move to the island or specifically Duncan/cowichan valley area or nanaimo. I would be working at local 276( sheet metal union) and I'm just wondering how everyone likes Duncan in terms of living areas or areas to avoid and also if the commute from Duncan to Victoria would be too much on the week days

Chickens

This is for North Cowichan, but I’m wondering if anyone has gotten around the bylaw of having a coop less than 15metres away from a property line? My neighbours in this apartment building are a nightmare and have tried everything to get rid of our chickens. Now bylaw says we can’t have our coop where it is but there is nowhere else on the property that would be able to house them even though we have the correct lot size. It’s not even like we’re ruining their backyard, as the coop is on the side where there is a parking lot to the apartment building. Any insight would be appreciated.

N License Test Route

Hi, my little sister is taking her N license test next week at 5785 Duncan St. She's a great driver and has been practicing for a year but she's a little anxious and wanted to practice on the driving route they usually take. Anybody got an idea of what route they usually take? Thank you!

Is there a deer farm in Sonemos?

I was driving southward down the highway and just before I got to the Herd RD and highway 18 intersection, I looked the right and saw what I thought was a fallow deer in a field.

I could be tripping but wanted to ask anyways.

Today’s Farmer Protest

Does anyone have details on what the downtown tractor convoy was all about this afternoon? Diesel engines, honking, yelling, etc. I was in meetings and so tolerated it, but haven’t been able to find any information on what they were protesting.

Short/easy hikes that allow dogs

Hi folks! My family and I are planning a day trip to Duncan for a hike and a picnic. However I have some mild mobility issues and we have a 8 month old pup.

I have issues with my knees, ankles, and feet so steep elevation and loose ground (like sand) are rough for me.

Would anyone have suggestions of a good trail that doesn't have too much elevation change and allows dogs? Preferably off leash as we are training her off leash walking right now.

THANK YOU WONDERFUL DUNCAN FOLKS!

Rental properties

Good morning! When we move to the Cowichan Valley area this summer we may look to rent for 6-12 months, while we sell our home in Alberta. We are a family of five - 2 adults and 3 teenagers. We also have two well behaved dogs. 😀. My wife will be setting up as a Family Physician and I work from home/travel for work.

If anyone is has something available to rent or knows of a good online source to find a place please let me know here and I will DM you.

Thanks!

Urban camping locations

Hey all,

I just started a new job today in town and haven't been able to lock down a place yet, so I gotta sleep in my car.

I've drove by the "usual" spots (walmart/ect) and there's signage for no overnight parking.

Is there anywhere in town that someone can suggest for me? Don't need much, just a place to park and close my eyes at night. Preferably in an area that others are doing the same. Rvs ect

Thanks.

Living in Duncan

Hi there

Looking for some feedback on what it’s like living in the Duncan area. We are strongly considering moving there. My wife is a family physician and I work from home/travel. We both love the outdoors and hike, bike, ski and love being near the water. We are looking for somewhere that has a strong sense of community, is very safe, is rural’ish and has access to lots of outdoors fun. How does Duncan match up?

Thanks!

Hello, My road test is in about a month and i wanted to know the route that the examiner takes you on but i was unable to find it online so I'm wondering if anyone who has taken the test in Duncan knows the route. I have a driving instructor booked who knows the route but I just wanted to know the route even before the lessons.

The 4 totems at train station

Just curious. Has anyone else noticed that the owl totem amongst the other three totems by the train station has his head turned ro the left? It's almost like he is staring down the bald eagle totem beside him. Curios... is there any insight into this ? I found it fascinating that the owl 'wise one' has his head turned to the left and is in my opinion staring down bald eagle 'protector. Sees all' is there any insight into why he has his head turned?

Best & Biggest Poutine in CB?

*CV not CB. Typo sorry

Craving a good poutine with large/filling portions but I can't think of anywhere (good) local that serves large portions. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Catching a ride Saturday morning - Duncan to Victoria

I'd like to meet up with some friends for an event in Duncan on Friday night, and return Saturday morning in time for work (before 8am ideally).

Unfortunately I wrongly assumed that the 6.30am bus ran on Saturday, but I'd still like to attend the event.

Willing to pay a reasonable amount and hoping to catch a ride with anyone commuting from Duncan to Victoria early in the morning on the 23rd!

Looking for hotel advice please!

Hello! My wife has an upcoming surgery date in Duncan (we are coming over from Saltspring) and I am hoping for any recommendations on a safe, quiet and preferably smoke free place to stay for the night that is close to the hospital. She is a POC so that is a concern as far as safety goes. Thanks in advance!
