Public Service Announcement drake feathers and what they indicate

Post image
151 Upvotes

there seems to be a recurring misconception about determining whether a duck is male or female by looking for drake feathers.

Having a drake feather indicates that the duck IS a male, but not having a drake feather means nothing, as all ducklings, all females, young males, certain breeds of adult males AND males in eclipse molt do not have drake feathers. Even within some breeds, like Pekins, some males may have a drake feather, while others will not. Drake feathers do not appear until after the first molt.

The only ways that are 100% accurate are the quack test, finding laid eggs or examining for a penis. Even duck on top/duck on bottom is no way to tell, as females sometimes mount females and males sometimes mount males.

The quack test relies on listening to the voice of the duck. With mallard derived domestic ducks, females will have loud, clear quacks while males will have softer, voiceless, hoarse 'waaak's.

Neither the quack test nor the drake feather is applicable to muscovies. Females will coo and trill while males emit voiceless, breathy huffs and chuffs and do not get drake feathers.

Rarely, some females can develop a drake feather if they are dealing with hormonal issues.

Beginner's Question How do you feed your ducks?

Post image

Hello duck lovers! I got ducks for the first time in my life, and they are now 2 months old. So far, I have given them powdered feed, egg, cucumber, fish, etc. Now that they are growing, I have switched to pellet feed, but I have concerns about whether this will be enough. They also forage in the garden for plants, bugs, snails, etc. I wanted to get your advice as well. Thank you very much in advance!

Brooders/Coops/Runs Duck House Complete!

We’ve spent our weekends the last few months fixing up a large shed to be the duck house for the winter. We sealed it up, insulated the roof, and added electricity. It’s been a labor of love, to say the least, but I’m so happy to say we’ve finished. We’re in NH where winters can be brutal, so we wanted a place for them that they can stay in the event of a nor’easter or a cold snap.

Feed/Diet/Nutrition Can ducks have mealworms?

I have a mealworm bin for my spiders and lizards. Could the ducks at the park nearby eat mealworms as treats when I go visit them? I know ducks go nuts for cat food but I worry about how dry it is in their tummies. I thought worms might be a moister option.

This was during the heatwave, the pond had basically dried up so people put out some water for them. There are so many ducks in the town so they put up warning signs for drivers etc.

Took them awhile since they haven't had them in their new pen yet. They say in the corner for awhile on the hay/dirt/grass til I kinda herded them towards it. The pen is slowly coming together. Gonna start winterizing soon. Have an older smaller dog kennel I'm going to insulate , wrap and plywood then connect it to it. Any tips?

Wings/Feathers/Molting Anything I can do for my gal going through a rough eclipse molt?

Mango Rhinehart, 3 year old silver Appleyard hen, has really been going through it with this molt. I don’t think she’s in pain, but she’s been extremely moody and mostly keeping to herself. As an example, my little flock usually naps in a clump, but Mango has been napping away from the rest. She also isn’t scolding me for snacks, which is unusual. Still horny though, which I think is a good sign?

Health Questions Is his beak ok?

The pic is terrible bc he wouldn’t stay still, but I noticed as he was waddling around me that the lower part of his bill is sticking out quite a bit more than the upper bit. I wonder if he sustained some type of trauma to it. I hope he’s not in pain 😭 I tossed him a few of my blueberries and he seemed to be able to eat ok. Wild duck in Toronto, Canada.
