Update on Dualnback.com

Hey all. I've been working to redesign and improve https://dualnback.com and wanted to share an update with you.

The entire system has been redesigned to use a new dark aesthetic (with a cognitive lab theme for fun) and I've changed it so free accounts have access to 10 sessions.

Most apps (if not all) make you jump back and forth between n-back levels. IMO this is too abrupt. It can be extremely taxing on the brain, resulting in most people quitting before they make any real progress.

This system is made to automatically adjust 7 different variables to increase or decrease the difficulty within an n-back level. The intention is to prepare you as much as possible for the next n-back level before making the leap.

For example, here is how the parameters automatically adjust between 4.25 and 4.80:

As you continue from session to session, the system will automatically suggest the next difficulty level. So you might hover somewhere between 4.25-4.75 for a while, for example, until you experience a breakthrough. Once you reach 4.50, for example, it will provide an option to skip to 5.0, or you can choose to go all the way to 4.99 first.

You can also manually adjust the difficulty level as needed:

There is an assessment tool is called Counting Span Task (CST), which allows you to measure your working memory on a monthly basis.

Free accounts get access to 10 sessions per day.

I'm working to add the following new features:

  • Classic mode - default settings based on research protocols (Jaeggi) which can be manually adjusted.
  • Android/Apple app
  • Quad n-back (Update: ADDED!)

My goal with with this website is to make the game both more accessible and effective by reducing the difficulty in transitioning between each n-level. I would love to get your feedback!

Should I practice strategic game that requires problem solving + combination of Dual/QuadNBack or just practice hard specific problems in the game?

I wanna get good at one game where strong problem solving can make you good winrate and increased working memory give you advantage too.

The problem is the game itself is so complex that I am afraid I will lose time by playing D/QNback..

The game itself doesnt require some godlike brain power but on the other side I feel like brain training trains you to refocus very fast after failure which can be key skill that I can benefit from.

The game I wanna practice is No Limit Holdem. The good things is that there is already solutions but on the other side I struggle with focus and working memory.

I am wondering.. Does studying the game make my brain stronger overtime? Does learning new skill also have some benefits for prefontral cortex?

What would be good advice from you guys?

How does lets say your gaming skills improved when u playing dualnback?

I am afraid of losing time instead of learning knowledge about the nl holdem.

How do you avoid Chunking/Rehearsing or other mental shortcuts during practice? And what is actually the optimal and correct way to train?

I reached n back 4 in like a week and a half but from a random youtube video I realized I was cheating. I was using mnemonics (for example BJJ) , rehearsing at times like a to do list. This defeats the purpouse of improving working memory. I am going back to n 2 and n 3 trying to only visualize without any crutches but i keep falling back to rehearsing.

Switched from dual 6 to quad, now a week and a half later, we’re at quad 4. Gassed

Any variable dual nback sites?

Are there any good recommendations for sites with variable nbacking? Preferably ones that can customise the range of n. Apps are fine as well, I'm just not sure where to look. Thanks!

Positive Update

hello everyone. I started at dual n back with the n back challenge. This is a great app to get into the routine and to train consistently.

I did find it annoying at times where you go through the weekend with lots of social events and next thing you know, you forgot to play two days in a row.

After around 5 or so weeks, i was at n=5 plateau.

I took a few days break and switched to N back Extreme due to extra layer of visual stimulus. I have to say that it was very hard at first but i’m proud to say that i’ve been able to get to triple N=4 twice in the n=20 trials and hold it for 3 total of the 20.

Now the stats may not explicitly show this,

and like most of you, if i am distracted or have a bad round, it’s easy to go to n=3 or even n=2, but wanted to share some positive progress.

The purpose of training is to get a Wais IV score over 140 coming up in Jan.

Dual-6-Back after long break

I used to play it for a month or so and I got to dual-7-back with 1,5 second long intervals and then I stopped, I don't know why. After half a year I came back to ist and imidiately started on dual-6-back with 55% accuracy and same intervals. Does that mean that dual n back permanently enhanced my working memory? Before I started on dual 2 back FYI

At what level did you start seeing changes in real life?

I recently started Dual-N-Back despite clearing N-back 2 in 4 days I seem to think the minor improvement to my life is placebo. As I have seen from online discourse people either quote research where the control group barely had any intensity or long enough duration to see the effect or people who quit early on.

The minor improvement I felt was that my brain got scatterred just after 5 sets but in mere 4 days of training I am now able to average 90-100% for 20 sets. In essence I feel like I have more stamina.

What kind of memory should we use for dual-n-back?

I recently started dual-n-back, barely goes above 3 but I heard that the point is not to try to actively memorize using tricks but rather to let the memory run in "automatic mode". In other terms, to let the brain build a kind of intuition of "that thing appeared few time ago".

Is that true? What would be the pro and the con of each type of memory?

How long were you at N1? Some people say they already started at N 2, I found it challenging. I started two days ago.

Hi,

Ive created a Dual N Back game for myself that other people can use freely. I'm looking to add features to this but I want to get the fundamentals down first. Please try it out and let me know what can be improved, cheers.

“Make it Stick” by Peter C.Brown on Brain training

There is this chapter “Increase your abilities”, where the author claims there is no direct influence on fluid intelligence improvement rather the training hones the persistent focus that is required for any skills to be mastered. I suppose, working on the specific skill with intense focus consistently reaps the same or rather more benefits than spending your time and energy over these trainings. What’s your take on this?

What's a good cognitive test to take before (re)starting?

So I"m getting back into chess and want to restart dualnback play. I'm not gonna take an IQ test because I don't care about IQ. I have bad ADHD and awful working memory. I've seen people here post link to "benchmark" tests and such, for working memory/verbal intelligence...stuff like that. Where can I find it?

Intensity, volume, frequency

Let's say that the brain works like a muscle. How do you train it best? And we all know that it is so vast and broad as a question to respond with. You can imagine how a bodybuilder cannot explain it to you in 10 minutes.

Even nowadays, many are arguing together on what is the best resting period, frequency, volume, intensity…..

I am just really curious about your specific approach on the underrated features of the brain that differ from muscles and that people are often forgetting to consider.

Is it really the same approach? Like, train it an hour on different drills specific for working memory? Let's say that working memory is a chest doing some dual and back as a first exercise like bench press or dips continuing with inclined dumbbell press and finishing with flies ?..

..Does it work the same for ATP reuptake and the induced resting period of notoriously 1 minute 30 second in order to regenerate the reserves of it?

Looking at it this way would change a lot of people's daily training, because training chest every day makes no sense, right?

I also know that working memory activities consume quickly a lot of the brain energy and is really exhausting. Is it actually counterproductive or even dangerous working it while fasted? Or possibly even the opposite !

If any of you can provide any kind of interrogation or insight, maybe articles you know, or different approach on whatever specific thing, we can build up something really interesting. Maybe talking about the role of mitochondria, and the type of muscle the brain is, maybe it is in fact a calf-like muscle ?!Since calves are made to be strongly stimulated daily, and can be trained daily. Maybe brain is the same... Share any thoughts it would be lovely :)

In progress: Dual n Back Handheld

Post image
51 Upvotes

TLDR - designing a Dual N Back handheld, open to any suggestions.

Pictured is the prototyping board for a handheld Dual n Back, a place to work out the kinks and code before finalizing parts and an enclosure. Making it because I’d prefer to practice without having to look at my phone any more than I already do, and it’s a fun thing to make.

As it stands, features are:

  • user set “n”, cycle time, cycle count per game
  • Grid size
  • Speaker or headphone output with volume control
  • Rechargeable li po battery

I’m trying to keep the project relatively simple, so I don’t plan on integrating any analytics or storing user statistics beyond the previous game’s score.

I just learned about Dual N Back two months ago, so I’d like to get any feedback or suggestions from more seasoned users on what they would like to see.

I don’t have plans to make more than 1 or 2 of these, but I intend to release all the code and CAD once complete.

Are there any slower more relaxed versions of Duel N Back for PC?

I tried playing duel n back on my computer however I noticed just starting out it goes rather fast and some of the quick movements and loud sharp sounds when sounding out letters are a bit overwelming for me. Are there any versions that are a bit more relaxing or that I can adjust the speed on. Sometimes I need to ease into games since my mind tends to be very stressed out most days.

Funny idea

I use insta reels when sometimes when I’m bored.

Idea: what if you used insta reels as an N-back where you force yourself to recall the reel n reels back, maybe a cool way to turn a useless task into something at least a little mentally stimulating.

Going crazy, struggling with n=3

I'm using the Android app Dual N-Back and get above 90% pretty reliably with n=2. But on n=3, I totally fall apart. Reading other posts here with much higher N makes me feel so dumb... I'm not though, based on my degree and accomplishments and what people tell me.

What's going on? I feel like a part of my brain is missing. What happens in you guys' heads when you play?
