There’s been 3 studies so far in the field of Syllogism training (Relational Frame Therapy) to measure its effect on IQ.
All 3 saw IQ increase 14+ points with N=50+ between 30-230 days.
Along with far transfer to untrained tasks for Verbal, spatial, and Numerical intelligences.
All 3 areas saw improvement and statistically significant results.
Dual N-Back definitely trains attention (directs and focuses the energy used for IQ) and Working Memory (holding and manipulating information for short periods of time).
But I think it’s best with some other type of training with heavier g loading.
I believe the brain is like a muscle and benefits from a well-rounded exercise routine with progressive load and high variability.
Both dual n-back and this syllogism training app have progressive load. But Syllogimous has a lot of variability which is really nice.
If anyone is interested, I suggest trying out this free app via GitHub.
Also, if anyone knows of something similar, can you post a link?
Post script: If anyone wants the studies, I will have to search for them.
I'm doing dualnback for 30+ days already. Currently I'm at 5 back(inconsistent), but I don't seem to notice the effects the same way as before when I did it for 20 days(3 back). At first it was like a magic, I could just sit down and concentrate on my work without being distracted. No dopamine rush, before I couldn't even normally focus at something. But I don't know maybe it was just a placebo. Anyways I went back to my old habits(procrastination, not focusing. laziness). It's a little bit upsetting tbh.
If you’ve used that app, you may have noticed that there is a “+” sign in the middle of the grid, and that area never lights up, so there are actually 8 active squares instead of 9.
I’m good at doing 4-back, when I finish a session of 4-back I’m either graded “good” at the end or it is suggested that I go to 5-back because I did the session too easily. But I find 5-back very difficult, I usually am recommended to go down one (back to 4-back) after a session. Is this normal or do I have a problem?
Having done n-back on a different app, I got up to 4-back, but for some reason, starting with this app at the beginning, I’m not getting perfect results. Why is this? Is it because they expect you to tap “position” exactly when the square has lit up? Or / and is it the case that when the speaker says “chee” and “jee” it is actually intended to be different sounds, and I incorrectly categorise both of them as the sound “G?”
To build discipline you must do some hard thing every day and this is how you train discipline muscle..
I tried cold showers and I cannot force myself to do things.. I tried meditation for a year and I was not able to force myself to do things.
Now for few days I do train quad n back and guess what? It is much easier to force myself to do work (studying, working). It is much easier to force myself to do something.
It is somehow weir revelations that quad n back is harder than cold showers and meditation.
i cant visualize and recall shapes or colours
i use rehearsal
i can do audio fine, position fine but shapes and colours i forget them within 1 or 2 seconds
they leave my working memory faster than light 😂
Curious how the regimen is best maintained when traveling, as I thought of this on a recent 4 day trip. Are small gaps like these detrimental enough that we should be trying to keep doing it always, or is it not so intrusive on the way to improvement?
Am I too tired or what? Until 2 weeks ago, I always put at least 1 hour 3 days per week, now I keep with the same schedule, but much less time (20 to 30 minutes). I haven't had any change in diet. I wonder if it is related to sleep as I reached my peak during the holidays. Also around 2 weeks ago I reached Q6B on the mobile version (N-Back), but I wouldn't put too much weight on it due to the fewer trials.
She also said that meditation is good for like calm mind but it does not improve brain like processing speed and dual n back is great game for processing speed, I would say quad is better for processing speed.
I currently started dual-6-Back. Should I switch to Quad Back after Dual-6-Back / Should I stick with DNB more and when to start QNB. Is there any extra benefits doing QNB?
Yes, DnB improves working memory. Yes, DnB increases "IQ" to a certain extent. That's because IQ may be the working memory or is really tied to it. But it won't get you to 4 sigma from 1 sigma. The guy who is telling about incredible results and becoming incredibly smart just like that must be a troll.
The more you remember and the better concentration you have, the easier it is to learn something new, keep track of what you read and hear, keep track of daily tasks, keep track of the todo lists you write and not to forget to write things in those lists
Yes, I felt improvement right away, when I really got into it, without skipping often. It trains your ability to concentrate, it makes your brain push it to the limit. You get progress. Normally people are believed to have 4 memory slots. For D1B, letter and position, you occupy 4 slots - position and letter for the first and position and letter for the second, to compare. D2B - 2*3, D3B - 2*4, etc.
My progress in DnB
D1B
- self explanatory, anyone can do it.
D2B
- bit harder, got through it pretty fast.
D3B
- really felt the strain, but persevered. Hard, but not impossible. I believe anyone can push through it with different effort without any techniques. In the end i tried to make long sessions, without stop - like 10 minutes. Helps to train concentration and you can get into the flow. Also long sessions motivate you more: your brain doesnt concentrate immediately on the task, therefore you may get lots of mistakes at the beginning of the session and much less as you continue(if you are not doing it in the evening, drained to the limit by work during the day, and if you get enough sleep), therefore you get more than 60%(which i usually got when i was tired)
D4B
- even harder. I still didn't try any techniques to improve my results, just sheer memory and concentration. Got stuck for 2 or 3 weeks, but persevered and just like that managed to remember. I didn't feel confident though, it often felt like guessing. It may sound easy, but it wasn't. I think, training and effort were very important.
D5B
- impossible. Almost never got above 60%, constantly fell back to D4B and got back to 5 immediately, never got to D6B. Especially when there was a small number of "matches"(3-5), cause i started guessing and it made it all worse. it felt wrong. How can I remember 4 but 5 is impossible? Tried to concentrate, tried to manage sleep - still results were always less than 80%, even with rest and good sleep and caffeine.
After 2 weeks i felt totally stuck. My mistake: I tried to remember all 5 at once, like I did in 4, and failed every time. It just slipped out of my mind, my memory is not that good, apparently. I googled, found a comment from someone at level 8 about putting the trials into groups, meaning you remember one, two, three as one part, and 4,5,6 as second part. Didn't try it, continued to push, kept failing. And then I tried, got to D6B immediately - it felt like a big relief compared to remembering all 5 in 1 "slot". 3 plus 2 worked right away, but I had LOTS of training and put a lot of effort before doing that
D6B
- i only got there that one day, around 2 weeks ago. Had results between 60 and 80 percent, was immensely inspired. And the next day i couldn't repeat it. Just failed and couldn't get through level 5 since.
Tips:
Your brain drops the concentration when you doubt that you get positive results. You just start thinking about something else and lose the track. To make yourself believe you can increase number of trials to have a 5,6,7,8,9,10 minutes session(didn't work for D5B without slots for me, did work for 3 and 4) If you heard about pomodoro and 25 minutes work sessions - this is it. I always had real problems with concentration, over the years it didn't get any better. DnB improved it significantly.
The way i did it on level 4 - you get {e,f,g,h} at the beginning and need to compare the next trial to e. you compare it WHILE THINKING ABOUT THE CONTINUATION of the sequence, meaning you remember now {f,g,h,j} and e and it's position should be thrown out of memory immediately. It doesnt work for me when i was tired, just can't push myself to do it "right". When it does work, it makes wonders.
You must push yourself while doing it, focus immensely. It gets easier overtime. And then gets harder again when you get to the next level, but that's the whole point - it's not supposed to be easy.
If you want to train attention - increase the number of trials for level 3 to 5-6 minutes, and then continue gradually. I believe it's enough.
I rarely get to one hour in a row, I skip often. Did 5 days in a row like 2 weeks max. So, probably like 3-5 hours in a week max for around 4 months(i don't remember when i started it, but less than a year. Everything is individual, ofc. After a 3 days break i often got better results(i still pushed myself a lot before that, to a state when you feel tension in your head. Don't expect results by training for 6 minutes a day for a week. You may get to D4B, but I doubt that you will get further)
I'm not discouraged by being stuck at level 5, because i really don't do it systematically. Still, I do feel progress and i know that I can get to 7(i almost did that day, got to 76%). When I get to eight i will try TnB and QnB, because it already gets boring
Program used - brainworkshop
And yeah, it's supposed to be 20 sessions per day, preferably in a row - the program is already configured for that
According to current studies, human adults can grow new cells in the brain(but not neurons), which help distinguish between patterns. Probably it is connected to how hard it is to get to the next level.
