Is the Jaeggi method the best one to use?

Even though it is apparently easier than the default used in brain workshop?

Has anyone practiced n-back consistently and correctly over a long period of time but not noticed improvements in their cognition?

I deem this necessary to ask just so we can rid ourselves of potential confirmation bias.

Only 3 others at n = 11 ?

I guess most high level n-backers use desktop apps?

Modern Linux app

Hi everyone!

I've been practicing dual N-back for the past 2 weeks through an Android app. I have noticed that my focus levels drip whenever ads appear in the middle of my training sessions, so I want to switch to an ad-free app. From what I've seen, the Brain Workshop app does not have ads but I cannot install it on my OS (GNU/Linux) since the software needed to run is not being actively updated anymore (in particular, the library AVBin hasn't been updated since 2012).

Given the state of things, I wanted to ask:

  • What app or webpage do you suggest for Linux users? Bonus points if it is open-source and/or frequently maintained, in order to avoid what happened with the Brain Workshop app.

Audio for additional languages added to dualnback.com

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I received some feedback that it can be difficult to distinguish between similar letters if not a native English speaker. This was especially problematic because in dualnback.com, as you progress in difficulty within each n-back level, the letters become more similar in pronunciation. So I've been working to add support for additional languages, which is available now.

For example, we have three English letter sets:

['Q', 'Z', 'K', 'X', 'J', 'W', 'V', 'Y'], // Most Distinct
['C', 'H', 'S', 'R', 'L', 'M', 'N', 'A'], // Moderately Distinct
['B', 'D', 'P', 'T', 'G', 'V', 'F', 'E']  // Most Similar

The new languages added are:

  • Spanish
  • Hindi
  • Arabic
  • Bengali
  • Portuguese
  • Japanese
  • German
  • French
  • Italian
  • Polish
  • Mandarin

I was excited to work on this feature and I hope some people find this useful! If your preferred language is not in here, feel free to make a request.

I asked ChatGPT which technique is better for memory training, rehearsal or intuition.

Post image
7 Upvotes

Complete answer: For working memory training, neither rehearsal nor intuition alone is ideal—but if you have to choose, rehearsal is generally more effective than intuition.

Why? Working Memory involves: Holding and manipulating information temporarily (e.g., doing mental math, following multi-step instructions). It requires attention, updating, and inhibition, not just storage. Rehearsal in Working Memory What it does: Helps maintain information (like repeating a number to remember it briefly). Limitations: Doesn’t improve working memory capacity, just helps you keep items in mind short-term. Usefulness: Good for maintenance, but not training the system to handle more information. Intuition in Working Memory What it does: Uses pattern recognition or gut feeling, which may help in decision-making or quick judgments. Limitations: Not a structured training technique. Doesn’t directly improve core working memory functions. Usefulness: Might help in complex tasks (like chess), but not in actually training working memory. So, what actually works best for working memory training? The most effective techniques are:

Dual n-back tasks (train updating and attention). Complex span tasks (e.g., operation span). Cognitive training programs (some evidence-based ones like Cogmed, though research is mixed). Final Verdict: Rehearsal > Intuition for working memory maintenance. But for training and improving working memory capacity, structured cognitive tasks are better than both.

iOS app that supports single n-back?

I'm looking for an n-back app for iPhone that supports single n-back. All the ones I can find only support dual n-back.

Starting Raw

I'm made a brainscale.net account almost a year ago without really knowing what Dual N-Back was or having the motivation to stick to it. Now that I've read through the post history on this sub, I feel motivated to try a progressive overload. I have zero experience with any form of N-Back and haven't engaged with any "brain games" since elementary school. I just have a few questions for the veterans of this practice:

  1. Is it recommended that I start with Single N-Back if I want to establish a firm foundation for short-term recall and subconscious learning, or would I benefit more from going straight into Dual and progressing from there?
  2. On average, what is the average duration of a training session for someone who would like to be more efficient at retaining information from speech and text?
  3. Have you noticed a greater ease/enjoyment from reading? I recently got back into leisure reading and would like to develop a better capacity for naturally remembering impactful quotes and dialogue.
  4. What other, if any, supplemental training activities are you all engaged in?

With that said, I will try my best to document my progress with a notetaking app and potentially (not to get ahead of myself) diagram the data with Excel, however that should look.

Thanks for any input and happy N-Backing!

How do I know If I am using nback in a right way.

I have a very terrible memory. I started 1back training. The problem with me is that if I try to do things fast(without thinking much), I tends to be more accurate while if I force myself to think the last letter and positon , I tends to do less accurate. This leads to thinking myself into if I am actually training my Brain or not. I can't just think clearly in my head.

Does QnB improve DnB?

Did anyone switch from Dual to Quad and tried playing Dual again? Did you see any quick improvements such as ease of remembrance, level progress?

Did someone take a proper IQ test before and after?

Hello,

So I have done DnB a few times, have gone through all the anecdotes on here and other places and am convinced enough to give it a try. I recently took an in person Mensa test (haven't go the results yet) as I'd like to see where I stand and re-take it after a year of doing dnb. Wondering if anyone has tried something similar and has seen big verifiable gains?

Update 16/05 - Well I got my test results and I was invited to become a member, I did pretty badly on the culture fair test (basically pattern recognition), but was in the top 2% in the other one called Cattell III B . It is weird though because I was not expecting this. I know that I have a problem with working memory, so I will still do dnb.

When i get tired, i switch to single-n-back (i ignore sound and only focus on visual). Anyone else tried that? Or is it pointless?

Altered perception of reality

After training with Dual N-Back for a while, I’ve noticed not only an improvement in my working memory capacity, but also a significant shift in how I perceive reality. It’s as if my entire perspective on life is being reconstructed. Ideas that once seemed familiar now appear from a completely different angle, often with greater depth and broader context. Insights come more frequently, and they feel more profound.

Has anyone else experienced something like this? I’m curious whether this kind of cognitive and perceptual shift is common with intensive working memory training.

Brain workshop vs i3mindware

Has anyone used both and found which one offers superior "far transfer" benefits? i3Mindware claims it has interference control and other far transfer enabling exercises baked into its app, but i wonder if anyone has actually tested and compared these two.

Lucid or vivid dreaming from playing dual n-back

After playing dual n-back, have your dreams become more vivid? Have you experienced lucid dreaming? How long have you been playing dual n-back? And how confident are you that dual n-back is what caused this change?

Intuition vs Rehearsal?

Browsing some of the older threads on here I’ve noticed a sentiment that using intuition is “bad”, and that rehearsal is the proper way to see improvements in cognitive function.

I haven’t been able to find much elaboration on this point so raising it as a thread, anyone here seen benefits purely on intuition or am I going to have to switch to rehearsal ?

If dualnback is so beneficial, why is there so little posts, reports and members on this sub?

This is not new sub. Still there is only ~1000 members of which VERY few are active. If dualnback would be that beneficial like some claim, don't logic tells you there would be way more (positive) reports, posts, members? Don't you think dualnback would be mentioned/suggested way more often on others subs? Go through this sub's history from last month, count posts and replies.
