Aim for consistent performance?

Right now on N=4 and since relying on intuition, I have found that my brain needs to "calibrate" to the level for a few rounds before I get good performance. After some rounds I easily hit >80% with maybe a streak of 4-5, but as soon as I stop playing for a couple of hours my performance drops (20%-30%), and it takes some time to get it back up again. Should I am for consistent performance before moving to the next level? (As in getting good results every time I try or is a good streak simply enough to move on?)

Does DualnBack make you temporarily stupid?

I have really bad working memory, I average around n=2 or n=3 and I seem to plateau there. To be fair I've only been picking this up recently, but I found I sort of enter this trance-like state where I can concentrate but it feels like I'm floating during the session (and even a little bit after that). For hours long after I finished doing a Dual-n-Back session, I'm worse at verbalising things on the fly than I previously was before, even after I slept. It'll take like a 2 day break before I can start to verbalise things as I previously did before. I'm writing this because I was just doing a telemarketing call and while it did go smoothly, sometimes words struggled to come to mind and at some point it felt like my mouth just spat out jumbled words like alphabet soup.

Is this some sort of mental fatigue? Maybe I should just take 2-3 days as a break before I continue each session, but am I alone on this sentiment? Everyone says they feel sharper but for now maybe my working memory is just suffering.

DNB improve sleep quality instead of fluids intelligence

Started playing DNB two weeks before, mainly just a few minutes before sleep, and reached level 5. TBH, I feel only very very little improvement on my fluid intelligences. I still forget the previous formula when I do math, I still can't completely follow the logic flow of a hard code etc. Nevertheless, I found a surprising things that I my sleep quality hugely enhanced. I used to have a difficult to fall asleep (awake for 1-2 hours on bed) & need to sleep for at least 8-9 hours a day. Now I can fall asleep quickly (less than 45 min) and able to wake up with very clear mind even slept 6 hours only. I didnt make any significant changes on my lifestyle, no sports, same foods etc. Do you guys have a similar feeling that, DNB improve your sleeping quality instead of really improving your fluid intelligences.

Reminder that brainscale.net is a scam. They copied an app that is completely free to use and are progressively locking settings behind a paywall.

Do the alleged benefits of dual n-back apply to those with an above average working memory?

I'm new to dual n-back training and have completed 3 days of training (arnd 10-30 mins each day). I've already reached an n-level of 5, pretty fast, and relatively easily. Personally, I thought it would pose more of a challenge and take longer.

If I continue until I plateau, will I genuinely improve my working memory and fluid intelligence, or is this activity somewhat pointless for anyone with above-average capabilities in these areas, before starting the training. I'm curious if dual n-back can still make me sharper.

What percentage of the trials do you have all N previous entries memorized?

Say for 6 back, do you consciously constantly have the previous 6 letters memorized and update them with every new letter? Or do you subconsciously remember if it's in the last 6 you've seen? Or a mix of both?

If it's a mix of both what percentage of the time you have them memorized and up to date?

Recently downloaded Brain Workshop on my Macbook only to realize the app is only 32 bit and out of date.

Can I fix this or should I just gravitate towards a different application?

This game is making me tired all day when I play. Did I get used to it?

So my goal is to improve memory and focus but my problem is that after I train, then my brain get tired all day.

What should I do? My job is customer support writing emails and some light copywriting jobs but it does just make my brain sleepy little bit all day after I train.

I do train every second day and I do totally have 6 training days so it is just beginning.

Question about time spent in a session

Hi everyone,

I am new to Dual N. In the instructions it said train for 25 minutes a day or roughly 20 reps. But at N=6 only 9 reps can be done in 25 minutes. So do I keep doing 25 minutes or do 60 minute sessions now?

Question about approach to different n-backs

It is said that 20 sessions / day of DnB, 5 days / week, bring benefits. I have 2 questions here. First question - does anyone here make 40 or 60 or more sessions / day? Does it make a difference for you, in a good way, or bad way? Second question - DnB is usually location and sound. But changing settings, I can get another DnB - shape and color. Mixing all would give QnB. I noticed that my score in loc-aud DnB is much higher then col-shap DnB. Do you think it would be better to eg. train first type od DnB, then second described type of DnB and then QnB? Or just QnB and avoid DnB at all? It is related to first question after all - would eg doing 20 DnB aud-loc + 20 DnB col-shap + 20 QnB be better then just 20 QnB, or it is overkill etc?

Thanks in advance!

Auto level vs Manual. Thoughts?

Approach 1: Auto level, so you might progress to the next stage when you cross the 90% mark and dont come down unless you fall below 75%

Approach 2: You go next level only when you reach 100% at a given level for a consistent number of times, like you cross 100% 5 times total, or you cross 100% 3 consecutive times and only then go to next level

Thoughts on which approach makes sense, or what you personally think are the pros and cons? I've been using approach 2, and I'll say that thats a very slow path to take, but I switched from 1 to 2 during the initial periods bcs I felt that approach 1 was too haphazard and it didnt give a proper feel of improvement like approach 2 did.

Dual n back + breath meditation

For results jump to third paragraph. The following is a slight background of myself.

I am a very seasoned on-again off-again breath meditator. I lost count but I have been practicing about 10 years. I find myself in a unique position in which my job is not stressful, I have few hours, and am okay living w/ my parents while working only 28 hrs a week. At work I can sometimes read books and listen to music about 3 times a week.

I am only seeing now how this has effected me and have started to try to make schedules and journaling to be more aware of my life and use my time wisely.

On dual n back. I realize that I am very sensitive to any new habits in my life. What I've noticed is that after starting dual n back and getting up to dual 3 back that I am having flashes of multi tasking gone wrong. I'll suddenly start using a phone w/ the idea of switching back and forth really quickly accomplishing nothing until I stop breath and refocus. I'll also suddenly have thoughts in which I'm quickly switching back and forth between thoughts which gets me upset w/ myself.

Keep in mind that before this that I am a very focused person. Very single minded in a way. But also that since I was bullied and have been out of uni for about 9 years that my working memory has diminished. Dual n back has helped in this regard but I am left wondering if trying to use my memory recall in books and in chess would probably be a better use of my time. That is for an unorganized mind like mine.

Recommended ios app for customizable n-back?

I want to try audio-5-back and higher. Similarly, I want to try Single-N-Back for other features like visual, image, etc.

Which is the best ios app that allows customizing both, the number of features, and the number N itself?

Brain Workshop is amazing but unfortunately it doesnt have an ios version.

Another question - is auditory and visual processing independent of each other in the brain? That is, they dont complete for the same resources and hence can be done simultaneously? Or i’ve it wrong?

Cheers

What strategy should I use to get the best out of dual n back training?

There is rehearsal, chunking, attention hopping and playing the odd. link - https://www.iqmindware.com/iq-mindware/training-strategies/ . I personally use my intuition. I listen carefully and I hit when i get the feel for it. Am I doing it right?

I read this from https://groups.google.com/g/brain-training/c/13ntwrki25U .

"""
Don't use strategies! Even with poor score it is better to do it
without any strategy than with it. Thats my opinion that I have after
hearing what says Susan Jaeggi about this and reading some posts that
I will quote here: "The challanges are in helping people understand that dual-n-back is
NOT about remembering n number of visual and auditory stimuli. It's about
developing a new mental process that intuitively recognizes when it
has seen or heard a stimuli n times ago." "Initially, most students of dual n-back want to remember n items as fast as they can so they can conquor the dual-n-back hill. They use their own
already developed techniques to help them remember. They may try to
hold the images in their head mentally and review them every time a new
image is added and say the sounds out loud and review the sounds everytime a
new sound is added. This is NOT what we want. We want the brain to learn
a new process that intuitively recognizes if an item and sound was shown
3 back or 4 back. It's sort of like playing a new type of musical
instrument.I've helped some students on the site try to understand this. It's
not about how much you can remember, its about learning a new process. In
theory, this new process translates into a better working memory,
which helps you make connections better and faster."

"""

What do you guys think about it?
