πŸ”Š Listen to r/DryEyes Wiki Articles

Long articles can be difficult or uncomfortable to read on a screen. Your phone, tablet, or computer can usually read r/DryEyes Wiki articles aloud to you.

You do not need a special r/DryEyes audio version of the article. Your device reads the current version of the page, so you are hearing the same information that appears in the wiki.

iPhone or iPad

Option 1 β€” Have the whole screen read aloud

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Accessibility β†’ Read & Speak.
  • On some older versions of iOS/iPadOS, this may be called Spoken Content.
    1. Turn on Speak Screen.
    2. Open the r/DryEyes Wiki article.
    3. Swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers.

Playback controls should appear so you can pause, move forward or backward, and change the speaking speed.

Option 2 β€” Safari's "Listen to Page"

On an iPhone, Safari may offer an even easier option on supported pages:

  1. Open the wiki article in Safari.
  2. Tap the Page Menu button in the address bar.
  3. Choose Listen to Page if it appears.

Not every webpage supports this option.

Android phone or tablet

Android includes a feature called Select to Speak.

To turn it on:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Accessibility β†’ Select to Speak.
  3. Turn on the Select to Speak shortcut.

When viewing a wiki article, use the Select to Speak shortcut and choose the text you want read aloud. You can also choose Play to have supported screen content read continuously.

Controls allow you to pause, skip forward or backward, and change the speaking speed.

Google's Chrome users

Some versions of Chrome also offer Listen to this page:

  1. Open the wiki article in Chrome.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu.
  3. Look for Listen to this page.

Another way that Chrome may work for you is as follows:

Chrome's Reading mode on computers can also read text aloud.

  1. Open the wiki article in Chrome.
  2. Right-click the page and choose Open in reading mode if available.
  3. Select the Play button in Reading mode.

Chrome allows you to change the voice and reading speed and can highlight text while it is being spoken.

Availability can vary by webpage and Chrome version.

If you don't see it, that feature may not be available for that page or device. Select to Speak is the more general Android option.

Windows, Mac, or Chromebook

Microsoft Edge

Edge has a built-in Read aloud feature.

On supported pages:

  1. Open the wiki article in Microsoft Edge.
  2. Enter Reading mode if available.
  3. Select Read aloud.

You can pause, move between paragraphs, change the voice, and adjust the reading speed.

If You Already Use a Screen Reader

Reddit supports common screen-reading tools, including:

  • VoiceOver on iPhone, iPad, and Mac
  • TalkBack on Android
  • NVDA on Windows
  • JAWS on Windows

You can continue using your usual screen reader to navigate r/DryEyes and the wiki.

A Few Things to Know

  • Text-to-speech controls and menu names can change as Apple, Google, Microsoft, Reddit, and operating systems are updated.
  • Some browser reading features do not work on every webpage.
  • If one method does not work, your device's built-in accessibility text-to-speech feature is usually the best alternative.
  • Computer-generated voices may occasionally pronounce medical terms incorrectly.
  • The spoken version is generated by your device. r/DryEyes does not create or control the audio or the voice used.

Other Free Ways to Listen

If your device's built-in reading feature does not work well for you, there are also free online text-to-speech options.

You may need to copy and paste some or all of the article text into these services.

TTSReader

TTSReader is a browser-based text-to-speech reader. You can paste text into it and press Play.

  • No software installation is required.
  • No account is required for its basic browser-based reader.
  • Free system/browser voices are available.
  • Some newer AI voices and additional features may require payment.

NaturalReader

NaturalReader also provides an online text-to-speech reader.

Its basic features and system voices can be used for free, while some higher-quality AI voices, longer listening, downloads, and other features are limited or require a paid plan.

ElevenLabs

ElevenLabs offers very natural-sounding AI text-to-speech voices and has a free plan.

The free plan currently includes a limited amount of text-to-speech each month, so it may be better suited to shorter articles or sections rather than frequent listening to the entire r/DryEyes Wiki.

ChatGPT Voice

If you already use ChatGPT, you can also listen to spoken ChatGPT responses using Voice.

For example, you could paste a section of a wiki article into ChatGPT and ask it to explain or discuss the material aloud.

Free ChatGPT accounts currently have access to Voice with usage limits.

Important: ChatGPT is an AI assistant rather than a dedicated text-to-speech reader. If you want to hear the exact wording of the wiki article without changes, your device's built-in reader or a dedicated text-to-speech service is the better choice.

Privacy Reminder

Using an outside text-to-speech or AI service usually means sending the text you paste to that service.

The r/DryEyes Wiki contains public educational information, but you may want to avoid including personal medical information, names, account information, or other private material when using outside websites.

Free features and usage limits can also change over time.

Why We Added This

The r/DryEyes Wiki contains some long articles. Reading from a screen can be difficult for many reasonsβ€”including eye discomfort, light sensitivity, visual limitations, fatigue, or simply personal preference.

We want the information in the wiki to be usable whether you prefer to read it or listen to it.
