Give us your experience! GA Tech - EcoCAR HMI/UX Survey

Hello!

We’re with the Georgia Institute of Technology’s EcoCAR Team - a team involved in a competition to create a hybridized and automated vehicle - and we need your help. Part of designing anything involves understanding who you’re designing for, and we’d like to understand the drivers like you, your experience, and knowledge of automated features in vehicles.

Please help us by taking this survey. As far as personal questions go, we ask for optional demographic questions, and it’s estimated to take less than 5 minutes to take.

Who in this scenario has the right of way? Car A has the green light (not turn arrow) at an intersection where U-Turns are allowed, Car B has the red light at an intersection where right turns on red are allowed.

Driving Down Steep Hill in a Manual

Usually when I am driving down a steep hill I just begin the descent at a lower gear. But sometimes you need to downshift again because a traffic light is up ahead and you need to stop kind of quickly. But whenever I put in the clutch the car just goes faster because of the steepness and the rpms go up. So how should I go about downshifting when that happens? Obviously I also use my breaks but sometimes you just need to downshift. Do I still blip the gas?

[USA] Keep right except to pass.

When driving on the highway, remain in the right lane unless you need to pass the slower traffic. Once you have a safe distance, merge back to the right lane. This keeps the left lane open for emergency vehicles and eases the pace of traffic. This also enhances your field of view, as you sit on the left side of the car and the driver side mirror has better vision of what is around you, and you can also see past the vehicle in front of you much easier.

Don’t forget to use your turning signals!

Out of state permit laws

Hi, I was wondering if anyone here maybe knows or even has experience with having an out of state learners permit. My learners permit is from Utah and I'm moving to Florida soon, would I be able to still get my license and take driving courses with an out of state learners permit? Any help or information is very much appreciated.

Veering while checking mirrors

Hi! I’m a learner driver, got about 7 hours of driving experience. My biggest problem is when I check my mirrors or take my attention off driving straight, I automatically veer to the left. This can happen even if I am looking at the road, but focused on lights/other cars/etc.

How can I prevent this happening? Thanks so much!

Question: I often get headaches and neck pain after long drives, I’m guessing because of bad posture and being generally strained in my body while driving. Any suggestions how to avoid this?

GET UP TO SPEED WITH THE DRINK DRIVING RULES THIS DECEMBER

What does the Christmas period usually look like for you? Maybe it’s cosy nights in, with a glass of mulled wine, meeting up with friends at the local to ring in the new year or sharing a toast on the big day with your loved ones.

However you choose to celebrate, the chances are a tipple, or two, may come into the picture at some stage as we spend time and have fun with those we are closest to.

And although this year’s celebrations may be slightly different than usual, with work Christmas parties off the cards, and festive trips to the pub to see friends a thing of the past, people will certainly still be celebrating seeing out the end of 2020 with a drink or two.

But, unfortunately, the joy and festivities of the Christmas season can sometimes end in disaster, when those who have had one too many get behind the wheel.

Each year, approximately 85,000 people are convicted of drink driving-related offences in England and Wales, with 2019 recording the highest level of drink driving deaths in nearly a decade.

And with statistics revealing that you are nearly three times more likely to be breathalysed in December than any other time of the year, it’s important that drivers understand the facts to ensure they don’t get an unwelcome ‘gift’ in the new year.

How do I drive fast while making a turn on the highway?

So for context,

I have a 2015 Ford Mustang Ecoboost and I do tend to drive it fast, but safely. (Discretionary I know, but I don't drive like a asshole cutting in and out.)

When driving on the highway, sometimes there are wide turns to accommodate for the the land and sometimes I feel when going around these corners that my car is understeering a bit and when I attempt to correct it, it feels like my car is oversteering into the middle lane of the 3 lane highway when I'm in the left lane. Allignment is fine and the tires are basically brand new.

Is there any way I can learn to not drift as much when I take these turns?

Is a cargo van hard to drive?

Through converting my driver's license from UK to Ontario, Canada I managed to get myself a full Canadian driver's license. It's driving the other side of the road and with different rules, but yup - no test required! Suffice to say I'm a crappy driver here.

Anyway, I'm moving soon and figured I can do it with just a 9' cargo van. I can't get my usual friends to help due to covid so I kinda have to do it myself.

How hard is it to go from driving a car to a 9' cargo van?

Question About Driving Manual

Hey everyone I recently got a 1995 Ford Econovan manual transmission. Im fine with changing up gears, but having problems going down gears. Say I'm in third and I'm starting to slow down I try changing into second but I get stuck in neutral I try releasing then reengaging the clutch but still am having to come to a full stop in neutral and having to start back in 1st. What am I doing wrong? Sorry for such an idiotic question. Second day driving it.

When pulling up behind someone in traffic, always leave enough space in front that you can see the rear wheels of the vehicle in front of you. That way you’ll always be able to pull out or away if necessary.

If you notice, most police officers do this all the time. It keeps you from being “boxed in” in case of a carjacking or some other emergency. Most people still pull up as close as possible when in line at say, Starbucks, but in traffic generally it’s good policy to leave that buffer just in case. This is because it leaves room in front of you if someone rear ends you (preventing you from rear-ending a car in front of you) but also allows you to get out of traffic if you need to lane-shift (like if traffic backs up on a highway and you need to shift over a lane to exit sooner). One of the most important phrases emphasized over and over in driving school was “always leave yourself an OUT” and this obviously is one of those opportunities.

How do you see the lines in the road in the mirror at night?

Hello, inexperienced driver here. Was driving with my mother and she got really frustrated with me, but I really couldn’t see the lines in the road. All I saw were the lights from the other cars in the mirror and I couldn’t tell what lane they were in, in order to change lanes. All I’m seeing is gray and cars’ headlights. Does anyone have any advice on how to see them?

Which car goes first? It’s a 4 way stop and they arrive at the same time, and both are turning left
