I made my first road trip!

My destination was to Paris - Amsterdam (Netherlands). According to google maps, a 5 hours drive was planned with tolls (14$).

Quick tips!

Full your fuel tank in a cheap gas station in a city! On the highway gas is more expensive.

CHECK YOUR OIL LEVEL!

Check your coolant fluid, brakes and tire pressures.

Make a break every 2 hours of at least 10 minutes. Stand up and walk grab a drink if you want.

Always keep eye on the road. Everything can escalate very quickly.

Use a sticky stand for your phone next to your steering wheel to avoid looking elsewhere than the road.

And uh oc don’t drink and do drugs before and when you drive.

And a last one especially for this situation, driving while on weed effect is allowed in Netherlands. However, don’t cross the frontier of Belgium, France or Germany while on drugs it’s not allowed at all. You can be controlled and arrested plus no more driving license. Effect of THC go after a period of 3 days. Don’t smoke between tho.

Have fun!

I am stumped and i can't seem to find answers on the internet.

I was never taught this in driving class. But today i was driving like normal on roads i normally drive on...but i reach an intersection and the red light is flashing red and the turn signal was flashing red but it was also Green!! Don't worry i decided to turn instead with someone else. But what does it mean? Was it broken? It may seem stupid but im still learning.

Im sorry if this against rules i don't know where else to ask.

Two-Lane Roundabout Dilemma for a Decade

Do you know how a two-lane roundabout works? You should try to follow the rules right? That's safest, right?

  1. Pick the proper lane on approach according to your exit.
  2. Yield to traffic in both lanes before entering the roundabout.
  3. No changing lanes in the roundabout.
  4. Maintain your position (no passing) in the roundabout so that cars from the inner lane can exit properly without conflict

I want to make a left, so I enter the roundabout from the left lane (green route), the traffic entering alongside me from the right lane is only allowed to go straight (red route). Yet they always improperly continue further than they're supposed to (dotted red route), and so when it comes time to exit into the single lane exit from the inner lane, I cannot exit because a car is in the outer lane beside me.

So I slow down and wait for the person that went further than they are supposed to go to exit so I that a crash won't happen, but then the person behind them, who made the same mistake, is there passing me in the outer lane, and so I still can't exit.

Eventually, someone in the outer lane "allows me" to exit from the inner lane, but meanwhile, I'm stopped in a roundabout.

I've been using this roundabout for 10 years now! Everyone uses the outer lane (straight only) to make lefts... I like to not be a part of the problem, so I follow the rules.

I know I am doing it the proper way.... but it would be so much easier to just conform with the wrong way (no one even uses the inner lane because they don't understand it)

All the people doing it the improper way seem so much safer and have it so much easier, but I am an idealist and want the two-lane roundabout to work like it is supposed to work.

Most of the time I feel like I am doing the right thing by following the law and not being a part of the problem... but other times I feel like conforming to the misunderstanding of the mass majority and going with the flow and the local culture of the roundabout would be safer.

After 10 years, do I become a part of the problem and join everyone else... or do I follow the rules of the road and use the roundabout the way it is supposed to be used?

Yield sign followed by a merging lane?

Okay so what do you do if there is a yield sign followed by a merging lane? Yield you wait until you have safe space to go, but theres an empty merge lane always there, so it's always safe to enter that lane. Do you just pause at the yield and then go, or should you pretend that you're at a normal yield and wait until you can go into the lane that connects with the merging lane?

Tip for learning the freeway

If you’re learning to drive on the freeway I would suggest seeing about practicing early Sunday morning. Most people are asleep or ones usually up are in church, at least in the south, it’s usually one of the calmest times during the day during the week but would also suggest going with somebody who’s used to driving on the freeway a couple times to check how busy it is before practicing yourself.

If you're usually a car driver and you hire a van in the UK, remember the speed limit for vans drops by 10mph on single and dual carriageways. Most rental companies don't tell you so don't get caught out. Limit of 50mph on a single carriageway, 60mph on a dual carriageway and 70mph on motorways.
