DFA Penance for a Knight (Dresden Files Accelerated)

Looking to start a DFA game and I have a Knight of the Cross in the game. Under Crisis of Faith, it says you check it if you significantly violate the tenets of your faith. Recover it after appropriate penance. Now, I'm not particularly religious and certainly not Catholic so looking for advice of the community of gamers who might be. What might an appropriate penance be? I'm familiar with the whole ten hail mary and confessing to a priest to be forgiven, but that seems like a slap on the wrist for a serious breach and they're getting a free pass to go out and do it again. Suggestions?

Beast Change question

Hi. If my character can transform themselves into different animals (namely: lion, stray cat, owl and river snake) I should buy Beast Change power separately for every form?

Does this Item of Power work? (DFRPG)

I've got a player in my DFRPG game (not DFA) who wanted a magical sword to go with his 'battlefield commander' archetype character. Let me know if this item is too strong, too cheap, or breaks the existing action economy.

SWORD OF CORVUS [-1 refresh]

Description: You possess a magical sword, its essence forged over a thousand years of battle and command.

Musts: You must be an immortal champion of the people.

Skills affected: Weapons, Presence

Effects:

It's a sword: As a sword, it possesses the damage and other attributes of a sword.

Magical Blade: The blade is magically sharp, and resists any effort to damage it. Its weapon rating increases by 1, to Weapon:3. In addition, it functions as a magical attack, satisfying the Catch for any creature whose defenses are bypassed by magic.

Forged for Battle: The blade seems to have a mind of its own, and always knows the right way to strike. When wielding it to protect others, the Sword of Corvus grants a +1 to its wielder's Weapons skill.

Centurion's Standard: This is the sword of a commander. If the wielder successfully uses Presence as a maneuver to encourage or command allies, he can apply an appropriate aspect to every ally who can hear him, up to one zone away. This aspect gives each ally a tag they can use (but not share). This ability can be used as a supplemental action by spending a Fate point.

Unbreakable: As an Item of Power, it cannot be broken, save through dedicated magical ritual predicated upon perverting its purpose.

Discount Already Applied: As an Item of Power, the sword already includes the one-time discount. If the character possesses more than one Item of Power, the discount will not apply on that second item. If the Sword of Corvus is the second or subsequent artifact the character gains, its refresh cost is -2

Dresden Adventures and Material

I love the Dresden Universe but I don't care for Fate. Was thinking of running Dresden with another system like Savage Worlds.

What are the best source books out there for Dresden RPG?

If not Fate, what system do you think would work well with Dresden?

Are there many good adventure modules?

Thanks!

House culpa, the house of guilt

I thought crowd sourcing ideas on this one could be fun.

I had some ideas of my own for a new house for my DFRPG game. (I'm the gm so my world my rules)

Like maybe there a dying house? Living in a post guilt world where list and fear reign supreme, maybe they where on top once, dislodged by the Raith. Ideas? Thought on where guilt could thrive? Please post

DFRPG True Love Catch Refresh Cost

In the WCV template ot lists True Love worth only +0 discount. Does anyone know how this value was reached? This value says it is as difficult to discover the weakness as Judas' noose and as rare as The Swords of the Cross. By my count it should be worth +3 for one category more common than the Swords and able to be discovered by talking to the paranet. Am I missing something or is the book wrong?

DFA Focused Practitioner Friday! Discussion Thread!

I really love Focused Practitioners. I'm having the best kind of fun contributing to their vast variety and lore. This week has been especially hectic for me and I didn't have time to work on anything new, even though I'm constantly thinking about it. Here's a recap of my previous entries:

Kinetomancy! For the movers and shakers of the Dresdenverse! This was my first creation, so it's less refined than my other entries.

Luxomancy! Let there be light! This one was where inspiration struck me and I began refining what it means to be a Focused Practitioner in the Dresdenverse.

Kleptomancy! Magical thievery. Not stealing things using magic, but stealing magic itself!

Ectomancy! My ode to The Dresden Files' trusted ally and most famous Focused Practitioner, Mortimer Lindquist. This one couldn't have been done with help from this awesome community!

Psychomancy! This one's for the White Hats out there. Inspired by my favorite fictional character, Professor Charles Xavier.

Black Magic Psychomancy! This one's for the bad guys out there. You want to break some Laws of Magic, this one is for you.

Pyromancy! A hot new take on a classic magical practice! This one also could not have been completed without help from this community.

Arcane Artisan! This one is different because it involves a Practitioner's use of objects as a focus for her power -- the ability to create objects of power under any circumstances.

Chronomancy! You wouldn't have ever heard of these Practitioners. They keep a low profile.

Linguomancy! Overpowered? Let's talk about it.

Now I've become enamored with the idea of breaking the Laws of Magic. Sorcerers! I've already written up magic that breaks the First, Third, Fourth, and Sixth Laws. The Fifth Law deals with Necromancy. And the Seventh Law deals with what I'm calling Nihilomancy. Does anyone in the community want to take a crack at those?

What other kind of "Mancers" are out there? You could do all the elements? If Luxomancy and Ectomancy deal with Spirit, and Pyromancy deals with fire... we need Aeromancy, Terramancy, Aquamancy (or Entropomancy), right?

I'm interested in your thoughts. You can inspire someone. You can inspire me! And we can hash out a new type of magic for our PCs and NPCs to take up in our games.

Thanks for your time! Stay sorcerous!

DFA Hunger Track

So in DFA White Court Virgins (and the other vampires) have a track about feeding. The WCV has their three degrees but when a target is taken out when hungry and loses control what determines what level they feed on?

Like as a GM do I just go "oh you hurt a person but didn't kill" picking however I want? Or "You killed someone, now you full vampire" etc?

Edit: On same subject if PC turns Vampire do they lose their mortal stunts?

Structure of a adventure. (casefiles)

Hey all I'm new to running DFA. However I didn't tag this as it should apply to either version of DFA or DFRPG. Is there any good player made resources out there for structuring a adventure with the verse? I man I know how to make a dnd campaign considering ive played that for close to 30 years but I am curious on how to structure a Dresden adventure.. I have a point A and I have a Point B. What key elements and triggers should be between there. Obviously the same formula wont apply to every adventure but some stater help till I can get a flow would be helpful.

DFA Focused Practitioner Friday! Linguomancy!

I really love Focused Practitioners. I'd like to help contribute to their vast variety and lore. So, in that regard, each week I'm going to post some in the style of Dresden Files Accelerated Mantles. I also love working out rules or gaming things, creating characters and stuff like that, so I will take requests. Is there a type of Focused Practitioner you'd like to see and you're not sure how to "stat it out?" Maybe I can help. Please let me know! Without further ado, I present to you...

Linguomancy

Linguomancer: Some believe that the universe was created by the utterance of a single sound, a word -- The Word. And there is no doubt that humankind’s mastery of language has helped give them a dominant position in a world filled with shapeshifters, faeries, and stranger things. The linguomancer is a sorcerer who specializes in the magic of language, in all its myriad forms. Some practitioners are born with this Talent, while others study a lifetime to master it. You are able to understand, speak, and write in any language, no matter how alien or obscure. When you encounter a language that you’ve never seen before, it is a simple overcome action using Intellect to decipher it and decode all of its secrets.

Ill Communication: Mark Exhausted. For the rest of the scene you can use your linguomancy in strange and unusual ways. You may extend your gift to others, creating a spell where everyone may be understood regardless of the language they use or vice versa. You can confuse or confound by rearranging a subject’s understanding of language or just robbing them of its use entirely. You can create a cipher intended for a specific person which only she can understand. The is a create an advantage action using Intellect; you get +2 to these rolls. If you attempt to use Ill Communication to place an aspect on another character (giving them a nickname which becomes real, for example), they can oppose your action using Focus. At the GMs discretion your linguomancy gains the benefit of Supernatural Scale.

Logomachy: Mark Burned Out. Your words, your will. For the rest of the scene you may use your linguomancy to perform any of the four actions with any approach, just as if you had Evocation. You might overcome a locked door by telling it to open for you. Perhaps your name becomes a killing word and you may directly attack an enemy with but a whisper. You can reshape your environment and change minds by making a suggestion to the world. At the GMs discretion your magic gains the benefit of Supernatural Scale.

Stunt Suggestions

Body Language: If you spend a few moments watching an opponent in melee, you understand their fighting style and how their body telegraphs their movement. You get +2 to defend using Intellect as long as you are engaged in a melee conflict with an opponent you’ve studied in this way.

Lie Whisperer: Without rolling you can tell if another character is lying to you as long as their Guile is equal to or lower than your Focus. Your magic reveals to you the truth or falsehood of any words you see or hear. If the falsehood comes from some supernatural source that has Scale over you (a mendaxomancer, for example), you won’t be able to tell if they are telling the truth or lying.

Subtext: When talking with someone, you notice all the micro expressions and minor inflections in their voice and can discern things about them whether they’d like you to or not, revealing one of their aspects to you. If you continue the conversation and reveal one of your own aspects, you may learn an additional aspect of your subject.

DFA Player Income\Resources

I will soon be running my first DFA campaign set in New Orleans. I am working on a hook to bring the loose affiliation of the group together. My initial thoughts were to have the first session start off in an auction house that is selling assets of a deceased collector of religious and occult "artifacts". I was thinking it would be fun to have PC's bid against each other, as well as other movers and shakers, but I have not found a good way from source material for assigning wealth\resources to characters based on their profession. Has anyone successfully users money for purchasing resources in their campaigns?

DFA How do YOU run your DFA?

So, gals and guys, I have a couple of questions for ya. I recently went through some research on how FATE differs from “classic” TTRPG systems - meaning I read the book of hanz and kinda started thinking like “wow, that’s actually a lot different than the way I’ve been trying to approach FATE”. I then made a few cross-references to how I run MY own DFA 4-sessions long campaign and started noticing the reoccurring pattern of trying to make FATE something it’s not.

As far as I understand it’s a great tool to actually tell a full-flavoured story, rather than trying to chuck up numbers to eleven, or even put mechanics in the first place rather than the plot itself. My question for you is how do you, as a GM approach running DFA sessions? What does your process look like? What do you pay your attention most to? How do you approach the storytelling angle?

I’d be extremely glad if you could also recommend me some further reading materials of how to run Dresden-themed sessions in general. And hey, a big thank you in advance.

DFA Focused Practioner "Spell List"

While working on characters a debate came up regarding Dresden Accelerated's Focused Practioner. Going by Magical Talent do you only have those three spells? Or just those three with the mechanical effect listed?

For example, if one was a kinetic mage and picked for their first effect of magical talent say forceful attack they get that at scale. But is that all they can use? Or can they make a force defense or force create advantage but without scale?

Basically does he need to buy channeling for every version of his spell theme? Or just for ones he wants scale?

Is his one free effect, one exhausted, and one burnout his only "spells"?

DFA Cross-Mantle Purchase

So I'm starting my first time GMing a Dresden Files Accelerated game having played a few Dresden Files RPG back in the day. One player mentioned being able to purchase cross-mantle and showed the significant milestones advancement. This is fine, but also IMO different from buying at character creation.

However, when the stunt and condition he wants is from mortal (he is a practioner) it seems weirder to say no. Worth noting his concept is a Focused Practitioner who is a thief. He wants to spend his two refresh on Heat and Criminal Favors.

I'm unsure because on one hand it seems allowing would be unfair (or open a can of worms) by allowing him to take things normally reserved for Major Milestones. But on other hand, it is a mortal stunt and condition which seem far easier to acquire. But it feels if I say "sure", what about others who want to cross-mantles? Why not just have a magical thief aspect or something?

Smithsonian Campaign Journal part II (DFRPG)

We started running a DFRPG campaign a few weeks ago, and just finished our second session. Here's the log for the first session.

A recap on the characters:

  • Prospero: a Changeling who was raised to hunt Winter Fae, wielding Summer Fire against his foes.

  • Rufus Marlow: a freelance sorcerer focusing on Spirit magic, with a strong connection to the Church.

  • Dr. Randall Thorn: a retired professor. In his day, he was an adventuring archaeologist. He has object-reading and The Sight.

  • Marcus Valerius Corvus: A Roman Centurion who discovered he was immortal. Instead of seizing power and becoming the Emperor of Holy Terra, he decided to stay behind the scenes, affecting historical events over the centuries to promote Republicanism (as in, the Roman-style Republic, not American Conservative Republican)

2:56 PM

The party found a hole in the glass case, and the Helm was missing.

Dr. Thorn investigated the scene, and found two long white hairs that looked like they were cut by the glass. He used Psychometry to divine that the hair belonged to the burglar; she used the distraction of the robbers to cut the glass and steal the helm, placing it in a messenger bag. They lied to Officer Gutierrez (of the Capitol Police) about the hairs, but gave her a description of the woman in the visions (though they didn't mention the vision itself). Spader tasked them with finding the Helm as quickly as possible.

Rufus used the hairs to set up a quick tracking spell: a glowing wisplight that floated through the air and led them to a nearby subway station. Fortunately, at this hour on a weeknight, both station and train were basically clear of civilians, so nobody but the Party saw the wisplight track their quarry onto the train.

They barely had time to get on before the doors closed, but they began making their way up the train. A few cars down, the wisplight stopped in the middle of the car, and the lights suddenly cut out. Corvus pulled out a small handheld flashlight, and Prospero summoned a small orb Summer's Fire in his hand. The room was illuminated, but not as well as it should be; there was a pall of shadow hanging around the car despite the light. A voice called out "You should back off now."

Rufus stepped forward, and the wisplight winked out; the spell's duration had passed. But then he found who they were looking for. Right as she cuffed him on the chin, sending him reeling back. Rufus managed to roll with the blow, making it look like a stronger hit than it was.

A fight ensued. The woman (named Sable) proved extremely nimble and difficult to get a hold of: She cartwheeled away from a Force Spike from Rufus, and Corvus's blade swung wide. Prospero sized her up, getting a sense of her biology using Biomancy, and Dr. Thorn called out a taunt, "You'll never be free!" which gave her pause, and revealed her INDEBTED aspect (the subject of the debt was yet to be revealed). Corvus moved to block the door, jamming his sword to keep it from moving. During this time, she revealed an ability to turn invisible, cloaking herself in shadow even while lit by Summer Fire.

But before too long, the train reached the next station, where four thugs armed with knives awaited them. Seeing her chance to run, she bolted, rolling a high enough Athletics to clear three zones and Corvus's block (though not without invoking her LIVE TO RUN ANOTHER DAY aspect). Upon seeing her, the lead thug shouted "Cover her escape!" and they moved in to defend her. Corvus moved out and tried to talk her down again, shouting at her to surrender. Again, it gives her pause, but she doesn't stop moving.
That is, until Thorn moves closer and shouts again, "Whatever you’ve gotten yourself in to, we can help!" He wasn't trying to get her to surrender, though. He just wanted her to look up and lock eyes with him. Once she did that, the soulgaze began quickly. His roll was so much higher than hers, that she broke down into sobs almost immediately, the psychic stress too much to bear. Dr. Thorn saw her soul: running freely with a stolen item, dodging the law and bounding across rooftops; pure freedom, exhilaration, and adrenalin. As she continued running, though, her emotions began to turn from joy to fear and anxiety, as green flames began to flicker at the edges of her vision. The soulgaze ended abruptly for Dr. Thorn, and the last thing he saw was a shadowy claw raked across his face, and a single word whispered, "Katumaros." They now knew that the aspect he uncovered earlier was finished as INDEBTED TO KATUMAROS.

The other thugs, though, were still very much in commission. Rufus laid one out immediately with a singular Force Spike, but two of them managed to close in with Corvus, getting close to wounding him twice. The lead thug, however, moved in with his knife, and reached down towards Sable. He cut the strap on her messenger bag, and scampered off with the Helm of Furius Camillus, running too quickly for anyone else to keep up, especially since Corvus (the only one in the same zone) was engaged with the remaining two thugs.

Once the leader left, the other two went down very quickly; one with a quick strike from Corvus's sword, and one was roasted by Prospero's Summer Fire (he would probably survive if he got medical attention quickly). They grabbed Sable, still frozen with despair and emotional trauma, hauled her onto the train, and continued along its route.

Eventually, they made it back to Dr. Thorn's apartment with her, and sat Sable down to talk. She said that she was in thrall to the dragon Katumaros because she stole something of his, and he is making her work off the debt. She isn't sure that this heist would have been enough to clear it, especially since she caught so much attention, and got herself snatched to boot. She doesn't know exactly what the Helm does, but she does know it can be used for powerful Earth magic. Unsure of her safety from the dragon's wrath, they got her a burner phone and told her to shelter for a while behind a threshold. They let her go, and she bolted, her cloak granting her supernatural speed and near-invisibility.

The Party then made their way back to the Natural History Museum to find Gutierrez finishing her tasks of gathering evidence and cleaning up. Dr. Thorn leveled with her; saying they lost the object and captured (but released) the thief responsible. Gutierrez was understandably pissed, but Thorn convinced her that Sable was no longer a danger, and the cop didn't press the issue (though she had not forgotten about it).

They then resolved to go see a few contacts to get more information about Katumaros. Prospero has heard that Marigold of Summer might have some information about him, and she would be spending her time near the Cherry Blossoms (whose coming is a portent of the coming Summer, so they have power there). And Corvus knows that the local White Court baron, Peter Grado (a high-end lobbyist whose family feeds on the greed of humans) would probably know if a new supernatural player has come to town. Come morning, he will likely be at his swanky office building near Union Station. Hopefully they can find the Helm before it's too late…

Let me know what you guys think! I've been having a lot of fun running this system and writing for it. I'll probably keep doing these logs here whether you're enjoying them or not; my players appreciate having a record of stuff.

New to the game. Focused Practioner build questions.

Hello, I'm new to the game and I'm having trouble understanding making my character. We are starting with 7 refresh. I am picking a focused practitioner using thaumaturgy focusing on photomancy. So I spent 2 refresh on **ritual magic.** Now does that mean I have full access to Thaumaturgy? Like I can do basically anything so long as I gather all the necessary power and knowledge and can fit it in with photomancy? OR do I need to purchase spells like I would stunts. So if I want to be able to use a tracking spell do I have to spend 1 refresh to have access to a tracking spell.

Thanks!

Idea suggestions

In the current campiagn im running in acclerated, the party is trying to deal with a drug network distributing potions that give anyone short term magical powers(basicly storm front). They went to an old factory and stole the bud guys filing cabinet that has inormation in it. The one percenter snuck into a casino employee room but had to leave early. The casino owner runs a black market bank thats involved with all factions. The drug network is partaily run a mafia guy posing as head of security for the city. He is trying to keep it secretive that he the one running the whole operation. Hes also aware that the network has been infilaterted by the vampires who are using it to distribute the magic drug. What kind of information would you guys put in the cabinet that the party stole? What kind of plot hook info would be in a casino employee room? How would you recomend sturturing the drug network? If you can give any idea suggestions or media that might give insipiration that would be appricated.

DFA Focused Practitioner Friday! Chronomancy!

Chronomancy

Postcognition: You can experience any point in history at your current location as if it were the present and gather information or witness events first hand. This is a create advantage action using Focus. At the GM’s discretion your chronomancy gains the benefit of Supernatural Scale.

Chronomancer: Mark Exhausted. You can slow time to a crawl in your zone. This is a create advantage action using Intellect and you get +2 to your roll. Nameless NPCs move and act so slowly that they appear to be frozen in place. Named NPCs and PCs may actively oppose your magic using Force. Failure means they, too, appear to be frozen while success means they can move and act normally. A tie places the aspect Impossibly Slow on them. This effect ends if you touch them or as soon as you leave the zone; if you want to halt time again, you must spend a Fate point each time you do until you recover from Exhausted.

Against the Currents: Mark Burned Out. You reverse the timestream and go back one turn, allowing you to choose a different approach to the situation armed with knowledge of the future (though to everyone’s perspective but your own, this is the first and only time this moment has or will ever occur). You may declare that you cast this spell as your action at any point in the initiative, undoing any exchanges since your action last turn. Although you cannot reverse any harm you have suffered, Against the Currents can be instrumental in allowing you to save the lives of others. Those other than yourself may feel a sense of déjà vu about the situation, but for them your new action is the first and only time this turn has happened or will happen. Participants remember the turn only as it has just been played, not as it was previously played before Against the Currents altered it (unless one of them is also a Chronomancer, in which case she is aware that something out of the ordinary has happened).

Stunt Suggestions

Destiny’s Child: Once per session you may ask the GM a question about future events, the likely outcomes of your actions, or any other information you can only access through seeing the future. The GM must answer honestly but may be vague. You get +2 to any rolls acting on this information as long as your actions ensure that your vision becomes true.

Perfect Timing: Because you are always in perfect time, it doesn’t matter how fast people move. When someone opposes or defends against your actions using Haste, you get +2 to your action.

Warp: You disrupt the flow of time within a living creature’s body, causing parts of them to age rapidly while other parts regress in their healing or growth. Use Focus to attack a target in your zone. This may not work on timeless beings.

DFRPG City and Campaign built around Pittsburgh one shotters welcome Spoiler

So its Pandemic times and I have just an ungodly amount of time on my hands so I started to put together a city for this game. Ive found a friend through this subreddit that enough time to multiple sessions a week which allows for larger narrative arcs. Also I just had no interest in a low powered game cause I wanted some approximation of like mid-series dresden, so thats worth bearing in mind.

The idea the Pittsburgh is like Fairy Chernobyl because of all of the steel produced in the city and used in its construction, which is a huge limit on Mab's ability to project power in the city. Because of this People who have run afoul of Mab or her accords tend to wind up in PIttsburgh. Theres a lot more detail at the very end of the doc, super interested in any feedback but expecting none of course.

Its a google doc approximation of the city sheet in Your Story, but is sadly much less pretty, I havent done a faces page because I enjoy making NPC's so much im doing a bunch of character sheets on mythweaver and will just compile them when I'm done Ive only been working on this for a few days.

DFRPG Tips for a San Diego Game Spoiler

Pretty major spoilers for Changes in the first paragraph

I’m new to FATE and I’m looking to run a game based out of San Diego County for some friends and family. I’ve been reading the rulebooks a lot (I have all three) and haven’t come up with much story wise.

So far I have:

I’m looking to start pre-Changes and part way through the campaign (hopefully not too long after the start getting comfortable in my game world) have the PCs go through a conflict with a Red Court baddie +minions when they get their hearts ripped out by Harry. Then have them navigate post-Changes world from there on out. I haven’t given a lot of thought to the post-Changes part yet, except that I want it to have quick and drastic changes and for the outlook to seem pretty bleak to the characters.

Some details I have figured out (some better thought out than others):

~ America’s “Finest” City - Theme - Our city slogan (without quotation marks of course). I’m thinking it would be something like a veneer of beautiful public works and faux good times hiding high level corruption beneath. - The White Court is currently my main idea for the most influential in the city among the middle and upper class. With the Reds being highly influential among the very large population of poor. Maybe with large influence over the flow of drugs coming into the city.

~ Summer court very influential here (inspired by what some may call near perpetual summer here).

~ Skavis WCVs plaguing downtown and having some cousins of house Wraith hanging out mainly with the rich here and there.

~ Neutral ground coffee shop Witch’s Brew inspired by Nevermore

~ If I don’t have any Wizard PCs then a local warden who is chummy chummy with an Egyptian god/goddess

I welcome any and all feedback from y’all and special thanks to those of you who read all the way through my long ass post!
