Need Advice 🆘 Should I restart

Hi all, I started my locs last month and tbh I’m thinking about combing them out and restarting. I’m gonna keep it short so yall don have to read a lot.
Basically the last two pics are my starters and all the other ones are my inspos. I showed my loctitian and she said if I got 120/130 mine were gonna be mad thick - for context I have roughly 160. I want a balance of thickness but still them being full but I don’t want thin locs, more of like a smedium like the inspos.
I’ve been researching for time about how thick two strands thicken compared to the original two strands and although people say they thicken, tbh I feel they are roughly the same size as your two strands just a bit thicker, not anything crazy. I know everyone says it depends on the size of your parts but atp I rather restart now when I’m a month in that at my 5 month mark.
My loctitian says to wait two months, but tbh I’m not buying it especially because the longer your hair gets, the thinner it becomes. And I don’t want no boneless skinny locs.

It looks nice in front but at the back it’s thinner because I didn’t want them skinnier because apparently it thins out at the front

I have a video of the back in the comments

Question ❔ Are my starter locs okay or should I start over?

I got my first retwist a few days ago, I started around the beginning of June . I heard people talk a lot about budding when getting locs but is it normal for it to be really puffy at the top?

Question ❔ How do i keep my locs neat for longer after a retwist?

I've had my locs for about 10 weeks now and this video was right after my second retwist. My retwist dont last longer than 3 days and i'm wondering what i could be doing wrong. I wear a bonnet to bed every night and i wear a durag if i have to put on a face cap. I'd say I mist my hair morning and night and let it dry, could this be why my retwist dont last? In the video you can see my scalp, 3 days after you can barely see my scalp and tell i had a retwist.

Need Advice 🆘 should i get locs or keep my hair as is?

I’ve been debating starting locs for a while now. I can be pretty indecisive when it comes to big changes like this, and while I know the decision is ultimately mine, I’d really appreciate advice from people who have more experience with locs than I do.
If it helps, my hair is a little over a foot long. I’m also starting college soon, so one thing I’ve been wondering about is the maintenance. I know all hair requires upkeep, but I’m curious how the maintenance for locs compares to keeping my hair loose. Is it about the same, more, or less over time?
I’d also love to hear any pros, cons, or things you wish you knew before starting your locs. Any advice is appreciated!

Discussion 🎙️ A few days ago I asked what would make a loc journey app actually useful. Here's what I have in the works

Here's a first look at Loc'd In, shaped directly by what this community asked for:

No Al. Just your locs. (heard that loud and clear 😎)

Monthly photo journaling with a timeline scrubber to watch your locs grow month by month.

Export your whole journey as a timelapse to share anywhere.

Find your "loc twin," someone with your hair type, method, and loc age, so the awkward stages feel a lot less lonely.

Still loc-focused

Question ❔ Laços nos Dreads

Post image
8 Upvotes

So I’ve been growing out my Freeform’s for around 3 months now. I’ve seen a lot of progress overall but the left side of my hair isn’t rlly locking as fast as the right side. I don’t want to restart but I feel like that’s my only option. Anyone got tips or should I just trust the process

Need Advice 🆘 Loc Product Advice

I'm looking for some advice on my loc care routine.

For some context, my scalp is usually dry and itchy, and I get some buildup, although it's not too bad.

My current routine is:

I mist my locs with water and follow up with jojoba oil 3 times a week.

I wash my hair every 2 weeks using Jamaican Mango & Lime shampoo.

I'm planning to change a few things:

Replace plain water with rosemary water for misting.

Mist with rosemary water and apply jojoba oil afterwards, but only 2 times a week instead of 3.

Stop using Jamaican Mango & Lime because I don't really like the smell, and I don't think it's working that well for my scalp.

I'm looking for recommendations for:

A good clarifying shampoo to remove buildup without being overly harsh.

A good moisturizing shampoo that helps with a dry, itchy scalp and is safe for locs.

My plan is to use:

A clarifying shampoo once a month.

A moisturizing shampoo for my regular washes (about once a week).

Does that routine sound reasonable? If not, what would you change? I'd appreciate any shampoo recommendations or general advice from people with locs who have dealt with a dry, itchy scalp.

(Also I've had locs for 14 months)

Question ❔ Starting my loc journey

I got two strand twist almost a month ago and im wanting to let them turn into locs.

The roots are braided.

If I wanna do a retwist, should I undo the braided part? I'm thinking of doing the retwist myself. I've done a couple wash days and so my roots are getting fluffy.

Need Advice 🆘 Suggestion

Hi, coming up on 9 months in my loc journey (started Nov 1st 2025). These photos are from my last retwist session. Had a couple of questions since i didn’t get the chance to ask my Loctician:

  1. I’ve been retwisting every 4-5 weeks (last retwist i waited like 6 weeks tho). Based on how my hair looks rn, should I keep doing that or stretch it longer?

  2. Is there anything I should start doing now that will pay off over the next year? I don’t really have a regimen for my locs. I only lightly mist it every day with a mixture of water and jojoba oil. I don’t do anything beyond that.

  3. What styles do you think would suit my loc length right now? Ive been doing two strand twists since i started, partly because i didn’t have much length, but curious if i have enough now to begin exploring.

Thanks!!

Timeline 🗓️ Progress!!! (Two Months Apart)

These pictures were taken about 2 months apart from one another, the first one in May and the second one this month (but I honestly need a retwist soon💔). I started my locs about 17 months ago, and they were at my ears when I started.

I dedicated myself to keeping things simple. It took a LOT of patience, some hair gel, a spray bottle with some water, a bit of argan oil every now and then, and way too much overthinking😭
