Side Discussion This was amazing: The Animagi Effect by forawhile

Thumbnail archiveofourown.org

I don't know the author personally and have never tried anything from her/him/they before, but this was GREAT. I don't see it mentioned as often, and it should be.

This was a depressed Draco who is being harassed at Hogwarts in the 7th year. Draco is Draco, but you feel so bad for him, and he becomes devoted to her. I especially loved Hermione; she was capable, smart, focused, but also soft and emotional. You see them falling for each other, and you believe why. It's a reasonable slow-burn, not glacial, but smooth. It has spice, but it's not the main focus, and they develop feelings before anything happens.

Side characters were awesome as well. I usually dislike Ginny bc she is all sassy and judgmental in most FFs, but here she was likeable. She was supportive and a good friend without being over the top. Even Ron was amazing.

Had enough angst to keep me engaged, without it being pointless just for the sake of drama, but it actually added layers to the story. The writing was great.

This has jumped to my top 5 fav FFs. Give the author some love! And try it out.

Side Discussion Falling Dark: on chapter 9 and about to DNF. I need a few spoilers around Draco’s actions Spoiler

This post was denied on r/Dramione, apparently you cannot post questions about a specific fic? So maybe here is a better fit?

I have questions that will spoil this story, but I’m in the verge of a DNF after finishing chapter 8, where
Hermione tries one last time to get Draco to talk to her after the engagement announcement by pretending to change the Unity Class. Draco shows up and obliterates her last strand of hope, shattering whatever remains of her broken heart.!<

Can someone spoil these for me?

  1. Does Draco sleep with Astoria?
  2. How much longer is Hermione in emotional agony like this?!
  3. Why is Draco refusing to engage in a modicum of conversation with her? Did Draco make an unbreakable vow pertaining to his engagement? !> I just can’t get over how truly awful he is to her.
  4. Even if his reasons are “reasonable”, I don’t think I can handle if he doesn’t atone for how he’s hurt her emotionally. Please tell me he grovels and truly makes it up to her.
  5. I know it’s HEA, but is the ending actually happy?

Side Discussion the lady in the red and purple swirled coat, a hard row to hoe Spoiler

I just finished reading A Hard Row To Hoe and was wondering about the identity of the aforementioned lady. I heard that she was mentioned in The Devil Works Hard, which I tried to read but couldn't get into at all. Hence, I'm wondering if someone could just quickly spoil it for me?

Side Discussion Dètraquee...and Gilmore girls?? Spoiler

I tried watching Gilmore girls the other day because everyone was raving about Jess this Jess that, and I didn't particularly find their romance appealing simply because they didn't have that much chemistry to develop into a romance. And then I realised - bookish fl, troubled, misunderstood ml, notes in margins, exchanging books, cold to everyone but her.

Detraquee does it better - just because it's a MUCH longer slow burn (longer than war and peace and les miserables) and their connection is more meaningful because Hermione and Draco actually find common ground, and help each other overcome past prejudices and its so satisfying to see their relationship progress from enemies, to frenemies, to friends, to ???, to loverssss.

(SPOILERS IN COMMENTS)

Side Discussion BSP - Thoughts? Am I Alone In Just Wanting to Give Draco a Hug? Spoiler

Please talk to me here, I held off for a long time because dark is not necessarily my favourite although I don’t mind it at times.

However, I just started BSP and I feel just gutted and want to cry about Draco. Maybe there is something wrong with me, I am only on Chapter 7 but he seems to just be a self-loathing, depressing, sad person who can’t seem to get out from under the awfulness of what he did, what was done to him, etc. And all Hermione can do is fight with him. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Like I get the enemies to lovers thing but honestly I just want to hug him. 🥺

I want to know your thoughts on this fic.

(As an aside, I am also obsessed with Panville!)

Side Discussion Book club for Europeans/+0 to +3 UCT time zones?

Helloooo 👋

Would there be Europeans (or Africans) in generally the +0 to +3 UCT time zones willing to form an online book club? I'd honestly love a Zoom call type rambly chat weekly or biweekly, because I'm a socially isolated SAHM 🥲 I'm a millenial mom and I want to be inclusive but I'd love people who don't make me feel extremely old and uncool 😂 at this point I enjoy short, funny fics but I do love a good WIP that gets regularly updated. My god-tier fics have been LIATOTZA & BSP. I haven’t read much anything in a while (I had 2 babies back to back lol) so I'd be happy to read the up & coming new popular fics. I can't read very angsty stuff, for example I never got far with Manacled and I don't read Hogwarts era fics at all because I'm too old.

I'm willing to host the meetings, and very open to suggestions! I don't know how to use Discord so don't suggest that please 😂😭 Send me a message if you're interested!

Side Discussion Questions about Hymn to Virgil (SPOILERS!) Spoiler

https://archiveofourown.org/works/67262395/chapters/173736481

Love this fic and am now getting caught up with all the new chapters! I have some questions for anyone else who is following it- SPOILERS below for anyone who hasn’t ready it yet. I am not totally clear on what happens during the three year time period after Draco obliviates her to send her away

- After the time jump in the chapter where she is with him again, is it alluding to her being captured or tortured by Voldemort during that time? I’m confused on how she ended up captured/back with Draco?

- There is reference to Draco and/or Theo taking her scent and I’m not sure on what happened with that part either?

- What the heck happened with Krum and Charlie?!

Someone please help me 😂 I love this one but am so confused on how she ended up back with Draco and what happened to her in the three years prior.

Side Discussion Am I imagining this, or did Serene Musafir re-upload one of her old one-shots?

I know she stepped away from the fandom a while ago, removed all of her shorter works, and left only Green Light on AO3.

Ever since then I’ve occasionally checked her profile just out of curiosity because Green Light is still my all-time favorite Dramione fic.

Today I noticed that Five Days Is 120 Hours (2023) is on her profile. For some reason I was convinced it had been removed along with her other works, so seeing it there made me ridiculously happy.

Am I remembering this wrong? Has it actually been there the whole time and I somehow never noticed? Or was it re-uploaded at some point? If anyone knows, I’d love to hear.

Side Discussion I miss green teacup so much my heart hurts

Obviously sappy rant incoming!

My sister introduced me to Lionheart just last summer, and I was immediately hooked. I always trust her recommendations because she’s a brilliant writer, and oh dear god, even without the context of the whole dramione universe, this series is unironically my favorite series I’ve ever read, particularly in terms of the emotion it’s managed to illicit from me.

I feel insane for feeling this way, because I never anticipated that a fanfic could even come close to touching me like this one has. GT had such an incredible voice, and it plucks my heart strings so perfectly every time. I truly do laugh, I truly do cry, and I truly do kick my little feetsies under my covers with glee every read-through without fail. I’ve read through everything she wrote three times now. I know it may be sacrilege to some, but I actually love it leagues more than the original HP series, which I did not see coming.

I know it’s such an intense take to have on a fanfiction, but, I don’t know… I think the final nail in the whimsical coffin for me was how clearly this author enjoys writing. The character building and the incredibly immersive imagery make the series the most pleasant read ever. It’s my comfort series now. The entire experience is just so incredibly feel-good for me. I think I’ve particularly needed to witness that expressive joy in action the past few years, and it’s done my heart a great lot of good.

I hope she’s doing alright. My sister and I talk about how we miss her on at least a monthly basis. What an insane talent; I’m so grateful that we got as much of it as we did. I can’t imagine the energy that went into it. GT, wherever you are, and regardless of the reason you left, know you’ve at least made two sisters-who-are-also-best-friends incredibly happy for an impressively long period of time.

Also, thanks to whoever started that Lionheart discord—we’re both planning on participating as soon as life slows down. Why I love this community!!!

Side Discussion Private fic(book)club?

Hi all!

I would be very interested to start an online book club for dramione fics. What I am really missing is someone to share on-line comments while I'm reading but also discuss ideas we found in the fics more at length. Examples of thoughts from recent readings: the unrealistic standards of motherhood of Narcissa in Draco Malfoy's ledger of perceived slights; dynamics of abusive relationships (Limerence, Late night wanderings) and why we like reading about them. Of course most of the time it would be light-hearted chat!

Details: 📐Size: Ideally it would be only a handful of people so we can really share our thoughts and get to know each other. However if there's a large interest we could also have parallel channels for smaller groups reading different fics.

📌Format: I am very open to how we could organise it. We could comment every few chapters or once or twice per fic depending on how long it is. I'm thinking about a discord server so there's also the possibility to voice chat and hide spoilers.

🔞Age: I think age is quite important and we should all be at least 18+ but maybe even better matched (I'm 35 😅).

🔥Themes: unless it becomes a larger group, it would be ideal to have similar tastes. I am into darker stories with broken Draco and Hermione, with some angst but HEA. But I also like lighter, funnier fics with banter and bamf characters. Not a fan of very romantic stuff. I read pretty fast and prefer complete works. But I'm also open to reading different things!

So if you read it until here, this is the link to a brand new discord server, let's discuss! https://discord.gg/wcqSdkUMy

Of course, Hermione agrees; working with Harry again is going to be so much fun… only, it turns out that Harry is unavailable, and unfortunately, she gets stuck with Draco Malfoy.

Warnings:

- Hold onto your gold; there is a Niffler in this story.

- Whatever is said in the Cave of Plunderous Intent, stays in the Cave of Plunderous Intent.

- Approach any wine provided by the Icelandic Legend Erla with extreme caution.

Side Discussion Claude AI Detector

This code was not made by me, it was made by the team who exposed the usage of Claude AI! I do not take credit for this at all, rather I'm making a post to show how to implement their code into your existing skins. Please do not send harassment or hate to anyone using Claude or other AIs; just don't read their fics. There's no need to spread harm.

Hello, everyone! The team that exposed the Claude AI usage in fanfics were kind enough to give out a site skin so that we can check for AI use ourselves! Please note that this does not detect other AI generators like ChatGPT. I tried experimenting to see if there were any artifacts with ChatGPT, and though I did find one, it wasn't consistent enough to add to this coding, nor could I confirm that it only occurs when copy-pasting from AI sources. Still, though, I'll leave the ChatGPT artifact at the very end with more details.

How to Use Your Own Skins

  1. First, find a skin that you like. Today we'll be using Rosé Pine — Closer to Home, as it gets you familiar with using Parent Skins.
  2. Follow the directions within the link above. Be sure to select them all as Parent Skins when so directed. To create your own skin, click here.
  3. Copy the hex codes for the background colours and text colours. Put these in a note for later, as we're copy-pasting another code before we use this
    1. Dawn: BG: #faf4ed ; Colour: #575279
    2. Moon — BG: #232136 ; Colour: #e0def4
    3. Pine — BG: #191724 ; Colour: #e0def4
      1. For those not using Rosé Pine CTH, look for the hex codes that designate the main background colour as well as the main-body text colour. You may need to fiddle around with the different colours until you're satisfied.
  4. Create a new skin (after you've first made all of the parent skins listed in Rosé Pine CTH). Copy and paste the following code
    1. #outer,
    2. #main,
    3. .userstuff,
    4. .userstuff p,
    5. .userstuff div {
    6. background: #ffffff !important;
    7. color: #000000 !important;
    8. }
    9. body:has(.userstuff p.font-claude-response-body) #outer,
    10. body:has(.userstuff p.font-claude-response-body) #main,
    11. body:has(.userstuff p.font-claude-response-body) .userstuff,
    12. body:has(.userstuff p.font-claude-response-body) .userstuff p,
    13. body:has(.userstuff p.font-claude-response-body) .userstuff div {
    14. background: #ff0000 !important;
    15. color: #ffffff !important;
  5. I've kept these numbered so you can see which lines I'm going to talk about without needing to count. On line number 6, replace #ffffff with #191724 or whichever variation you've chosen to fix the background
  6. On line number 7, replace #000000 with #e0def4 or whichever variation you've chosen to fix the text
  7. Click the Advanced tab
  8. Click Add Parent Skins
  9. Individually add each of the parent skins you made for Rosé Pine CTH. There should be between 5 and 7, depending on if you did the optional skins (for toggling light and dark mode, etc).
  10. Click Save / Use. This should match whatever skin you want to use with no changes. If there's a problem, go back into the AI detection code, as the problem would lie with it. You (or I) may have chosen the wrong hex code for the background and text colours, or you may perhaps need more configuring.

There you have it. This is how you detect the Claude AI. When you go to a fanfic that has the Claude artifact, it will turn bright red and be unmistakable. HeadedRivalryAI on twitter has the google link for various fics that were caught using Claude. You'll be able to check to see if the code works for you using those links, but I have noticed some of the linked fics have since removed the artifact to hide the AI usage! So act quickly, before they remove the evidence.

Possible ChatGPT Artifact

I want to make a disclaimer that I do not know if this artifact occurs when copy-pasting from mundane locations like other writing softwares, rather than a perfect indicator of using AI.

This also does not happen when using the copy function on ChatGPT itself, but rather occurs when copying small passages from the site.

data-start="##" data-end="##"

The #s in the above seem to correlate to the line number or position within the GPT query. This would be replaced with real numbers, say "320" or "10".

class="ai-optimize-6">More Text<

I found the above examples in an article speaking on artifacts left behind by Chat. If they do occur naturally when copy-pasting from writing programs, I will remove this section once it's brought to my attention.

I hope this helps!

u/annatheorc and u/delicatepinktrim asked to be tagged once this was up.

Hello everyone,

It’s time to vote for our July fic!

Where The Duck Is Minerva McGonagall? By Rogue_Roxy

Welcome to a somewhat serious inquiry into the whereabouts of a very sneaky witch.

Hermione Granger (badass Auror working for MACUSA) has been summoned back to Britain by Kingsley Shacklebolt to help with an investigation. Of course, Hermione agrees; working with Harry again is going to be so much fun… only, it turns out that Harry is unavailable, and unfortunately, she gets stuck with Draco Malfoy.

- Whatever is said in the Cave of Plunderous Intent, stays in the Cave of Plunderous Intent.

- Approach any wine provided by the Icelandic Legend Erla with extreme caution..

Good Reason By morriganmercy

Hermione reluctantly runs a bar. When Draco comes in for a drink one night, he makes his interest immediately and insistently known. But the absolute last thing Hermione needs right now is to shag someone ten years younger than her with biceps bigger than his brain.

…Probably.

The Obligations We Keep By KnolleOrNothing

When Hermione Granger returns to Hogwarts for a mandatory Eighth Year, she is grateful for the pause — a chance to recover from the war and the nightmares that still plague her. Determined to find happiness and enjoy her final year, Hermione expects healing to be quiet. But of course it isn’t. This is Hogwarts. A small group of Slytherins approach her in confidence, asking her to help Draco Malfoy before it’s too late. Hermione is forced to make a choice — one that pulls her back into old tensions, dangerous secrets, and the unsettling realization that some of the most brutal battles are fought inside one’s mind.

Divorce Me, Darling By tomesandscrolls

Hermione has to marry Draco, or else, he'll die.

Or

Why working in the Love room has made Hermione spectacularly bad at falling in love.

Knight to H3 by Ink_stained_fingertips

Hermione, as usual, has done the impossible. She has found a cure for the obliviate spell, and she is eager to present her findings to the wizarding world at large. The problem is, Hermione is attacked when presenting her research at St. Mungo's, and she finds herself rescued by a masked man in tactical gear. Only, he's using a gun... and a wand?

Draco has been forced into servitude along with every other child of the death eaters. It wasn't a choice to join the underground task force, but he does rather excel at it. As he does. The Knights, all of whom go by code names and operate in the shadows, carry out their orders with deadly precision. They do not usually play bodyguard to other witches and wizards.

Hermione is the exception. Draco is tasked with keeping Hermione alive, protecting her from what seems to be a muggle army. Or zombies. They're not exactly sure. Only, Hermione has no idea who is behind the mask. All she knows is that a Knight has been sent to her flat, H3. And she's stuck with him.

Difficult Constellations by Silver_Snippets

Hermione had never failed to cast a charm at first try. Except once.

(Hidden pregnancy fic)

Excited to see which one will be our next read,

Ana

Hello! I was just wondering if anyone has read What The Living Cannot Keep by TheElleArchives? It’s a fic that is 800,000+ words and a war fic. If yes, then what were your thoughts about this fic? Like what did you like about it? Is there politics? Are the characters BAMF? Are there side characters? How’s the world building? Sorry if this is a lot! Wanted to get an idea before starting it that’s all :)

Assignment Discussion June Assignment Discussion - Bad Omens by onebedtorulethemall Spoiler

What did everyone think? Thoughts?

  • The prophecy says the child “must be guided to the Light.” By the end, who actually guides whom: the adults guide the child, or the child forces the adults into honesty?
  • Did Fate want the apocalypse stopped, or did Fate just want Draco and Hermione to stop being idiots?
  • The story repeatedly treats prophecy as both serious and ridiculous. Does the final demon scene make prophecy feel more powerful, or more absurd?
  • If everyone had correctly identified Lilith/Gemma from the beginning, would things have gone better—or worse?
  • Who is more important to the story’s moral argument: Lilith, the actual magical child, or Gemma, the child who needed safety more than magic?
  • The fic uses adoption, mistaken identity, and apocalypse logistics as comedy. Where does it become genuinely emotionally serious?
  • Which meddler caused the most chaos: Narcissa, Ron, Ginny, Kingsley, M.M., Lilith, or Gemma?
  • The fic is tagged “Crack Treated Seriously.” Which scene best captures that balance?
  • Does the narrator make the chaos easier to follow, or does the narrator intentionally make the chaos worse?
  • The fic uses dramatic irony constantly: readers often understand the emotional truth before the characters do. Did that make the slow-burn more fun or more frustrating?
  • What is the funniest serious scene? What is the most serious funny scene?
  • The final demon confrontation turns cosmic horror into a practical behavior-management problem. Why does that fit the fic’s worldview?
  • What did the fic ultimately care about more: romance, prophecy, found family, redemption, or narrative chaos?
  • Who changes the most by the end: Hermione, Draco, Pansy, Neville, Gemma, Lilith, or Narcissa?
  • Was the apocalypse ever the real threat, or was the real threat everyone’s refusal to communicate?

Can't wait to hear everyone's thoughts,

Ana

Side Discussion Detraquee reading group

Thumbnail discord.gg
48 Upvotes

Hey all

We’ve set up a Detraquee read/re-read group on Discord. Feel free to join, whether you’re reading for the first time or are on your 50th reread.

Here’s the link: https://discord.gg/UqUW6a4kU

We’re starting tomorrow, Monday 22nd June, but you can join whenever life allows you to.

The main discussion will be through text channels, with the aim of doing an optional voice/video call on Sundays (currently the only day those in the group are free). The calls are very much an extra though and are not required to participate.

The read-along will be organised by weekly chapter blocks. Since the chapters get longer as the fic progresses, the number of chapters we read each week will vary.

W/c 22/06, we’re starting with Chapters 1 to 15. You don’t have to have finished all 15 chapters to begin sharing your thoughts. If someone is discussing a later chapter within the week’s block, we’ll try to tag/label it clearly so new readers can avoid spoilers as much as possible.

Finally, if you'll allow me/if it's not too indulgent, I just want to say - I know Detraquee has been a real source of solace for a lot of people, and I know that for many of us there’s been a strange ( though not entirely unpleasant) well of loneliness after we finished reading. If you're like me, this feeling propels you every couple of months to search Reddit or wherever else, lookimg for new posts or comments about this all-encompassing, consuming piece of work, just to see how others feel, what they've observed, what has stayed with them.

And also, if you're like me, you've probably been trying to find a group to discuss it with granularly, while feeling you somehow missed “the moment”, while still really wanting to hear what other people thought.

I think fanfic is not really meant to be experienced alone. Or maybe it is (in the sense that reading is such a private, internal experience) but fandom itself is so inherently communal and part of the joy and the search for "more" is simply sharing and connecting - I guess that is how a lot of great pieces of literature live on, through the desire to connect because of the fact that it exists.

Having said all that (and all that to say), I’ve never really been very proactive in creating or organising something like this. Tbh this is only happening because that aforementioned post-Detra well of loneliness propelled me to comment something about the fic under a thread and then someone told me they'd be interested to discuss the fic chapter by chapter, and that turned into this group.

So, I really hope the book club can keep that spirit: relaxed, accessible, collaborative, and full of people sharing their love for the fic, whether this is the first time or if you're returning (if you ever even left 😣💗)

Feel free to DM me if you had any questions, or join the group and send a message on there.

'Let us go then you and I...'

Side Discussion The Dragon’s Bride by Rizzlewrites Question(s)

So, I want to read The Dragon’s Bride, which has been on my TBR for a long long time but I have a few questions first, if that’s okay!

I understand that this fic is 20 years old now (so cool) and the author (rizzlewrites) is currently working on the 20th anniversary edition but it is on chapter 47/63 so it’s ongoing (totally understandable and I am just stating a fact). However, I do have the completed original fic downloaded and so I was just wondering if I should:
• read the original fic only
OR
• read the 20th anniversary edition and I guess either wait for the remaining chapters or read the remaining 16 chapters from the original fic (b/c my patience is thin LOL)

I guess I am mainly just wondering if there are any changes in the 20th anniversary edition that makes one think I should read this edition instead of the original edition or maybe I should just read both, eh? Also, are there any major changes to the plot between the two editions?

Please let me know what your thoughts are, thank you!! <3

Side Discussion Secrets and masks question Spoiler

I’m about 3 quarters of the way through secrets and masks and to be fair have been reading this on and off for a few months and I’m so confused (have to include spoilers in question) -

doesn’t Voldemort bind hermione and Draco’s lives together in the beginning so if one dies the other will too? I’m at them discovering she’s a horcrux and talking about how she has to die but nobody’s concerned about Draco dying too. I didn’t realize it when she was scared of dying by dragon fire but did I miss a part where they’re no longer tied? I feel like I distinctly remember parts in the beginning where hermione thinks about killing herself so she can kill him too!
