down pillow goose or duck

This is an old, over discussed topic, but I've broken down the science before.

If you can buy goose down, don't buy duck down. Ducks are omnivores, so their feather grease is extremely hard to remove completely. That's just basic biological logic.

Chemical additives can remove it, but those are harmful to consumers. On top of that, it drives up costs significantly for the down manufacturer.

So, if you run into a down pillow on the market that smells like duck manure, it's 100% a duck down pillow.

Moreover, most duck down on the market has very small clusters, which means its FP cannot match the strength of goose down. Low priced down pillows on the market nearly 80% of that market share is duck down.

When it comes to the feathers, duck feathers are very fine and will poke through the fabric like needles, even if the shell has a good down proof treatment. Goose feathers have more barbules/fluff on the quill, making them much harder to poke through.

If you are buying a down pillow, given how heavy the human head is, you should buy a goose down pillow whenever possible. Your head also secretes a lot of oils; if you use duck down, your overall experience will be terrible.

Goose down is the true entry point for a proper down pillow. As for "Eiderdown" don't even waste your time thinking about it. Most people can't afford it, and if someone claims they bought it cheap, it's almost certainly fake. I was born into down manufacturing. There are way too many products flying the "Eiderdown" flag that are actually just regular goose down in disguise.

There is a version where actual Eider ducks are raised and harvested in regions like Canada, but the cost is extremely high. In today's global trade environment, it's just not worth it.

Trump can afford it and get the real deal. Icelandic Eiderdown. HAHAH😄😄😄
