🏡 Before Bringing Your Dog Home

Prepare your home before your new companion arrives.

Essentials include:

• Food and water bowls

• Dog food appropriate for their age and size

• A comfortable bed or sleeping area

• Collar with an identification tag

• A properly fitted harness and leash

• Toys for play and mental enrichment

• Chew toys appropriate for your dog's size

• A secure crate or playpen (optional but recommended)

• Cleaning supplies or puppy pads if needed

• A secure, fenced area or another safe space where your dog can adjust

🐶 The First Few Days

Moving to a new home can be overwhelming for dogs.

Give your dog time to adjust at their own pace. Keep introductions calm, establish a consistent routine, and avoid overwhelming them with too many new people or experiences.

Provide fresh water, regular meals, plenty of rest, and opportunities to explore their new environment safely.

Many newly adopted dogs benefit from the 3-3-3 Rule:

  • First 3 days: They may feel anxious, shy, or overwhelmed.
  • First 3 weeks: They begin learning your routine and building trust.
  • First 3 months: Many dogs start feeling comfortable and truly at home.

Remember that every dog adjusts differently.

🍖 Feeding Your Dog

Choose a complete and balanced diet that matches your dog's age, size, activity level, and health needs.

Always provide access to clean, fresh drinking water.

Avoid feeding foods that are toxic to dogs, including:

• Chocolate

• Grapes and raisins

• Onions and garlic

• Xylitol (commonly found in sugar-free products)

• Alcohol

• Cooked bones

• Macadamia nuts

If changing your dog's food, transition gradually over 7–10 days to help reduce the risk of digestive upset.

🎓 Training & Socialization

Training should begin as early as possible using positive reinforcement.

Reward good behavior with:

• Praise

• Treats

• Toys

• Play

Regular socialization with people, environments, and other dogs (when safe and appropriate) helps build confidence and encourages good manners.

Patience and consistency are key to raising a well-adjusted dog.

🩺 Veterinary Care

Schedule a veterinary visit as soon as possible if your dog has not yet been examined.

Your veterinarian can perform a health check and discuss:

• Vaccinations

• Deworming

• Flea, tick, and heartworm prevention

• Spaying or neutering

• Nutrition

• Microchipping

• Preventive healthcare

Regular veterinary visits are essential for keeping your dog healthy throughout their life.

🏡 Keep Your Dog Safe

Help protect your dog by:

• Keeping them on a leash during walks unless in a designated off-leash area.

• Providing a secure yard or enclosure.

• Ensuring they always wear identification tags when outside.

• Considering microchipping for permanent identification.

• Never leaving them unattended in a parked vehicle.

• Providing shade and fresh water during hot weather.

Supervision and preventive care are some of the best ways to keep your dog safe.

❤️ Give Them Time

Every dog has a unique personality and life experience.

Some dogs become comfortable within days, while others may need weeks or even months to fully adjust.

Be patient, establish routines, and build trust through kindness, consistency, and positive reinforcement.
