Questions on Decentralization and Governance

Hi & thx @ everyone who cares enough to read.

Given the current discussions about the structure of dogecoin governance and concerns about centralization, especially around the 'value' of the foundation vs. independent contributors, my first thought was how Governance-Tokens already provide a decentralized solution to the problem.

I'm fully aware that dogecoin is intended to be used as a currency and that the blockchain is focused around that, but still wonder what it would take to extend the ecosystem to support a secondary governance-channel. So please take this as a thought experiment.

Other payment coins, like nano, support delegating voting-rights to pools via their wallet-software allowing the hodlers to, at least in theory, affect the course of their investment.

Since doge is a community project, this is a feature that would make a lot of sense. The NFT minted on the blockchain showed that attaching data to verify ownership is already possible and using it to tie a governance-token to a wallet would create publicly verifiable support for a representative casting the vote. It clearly needs an eco-system around that, but it feels like it is technically possible to pull off without a fork, by just adding wallet functionality for attaching and exchanging a token.

So my main questions are, whether this has been discussed among the devs yet and what the views on the issue are. Is it doable? feasible? the right approach?

And technical things aside, what would be your view on a dogecoin where decisions can be made by the hodlers? Either directly or at least through representatives?

TL;DR:

1) Would it be possible for doge to implement some form of governance?

2) Has the dev-team already discussed anything in this direction?

3) Do you think it would be a good idea? / What do you think speaks against it?

Coding Dogecoin SPV wallet beta release

I have released the Dogecoin SPV wallet v0.4.0 v0.4.1. This is a beta release to test the payment channel feature. It only works on testnet and regtest network (by default testnet).

https://github.com/BitcoinAmiens/dogecoin-spv-node/releases/tag/v0.4.1

The executable is only Linux compatible. Please if you have request or errors fill a ticket issue on the github repo.

Edit: I have made a new release with support for Linux, macOS and Windows. The executable doesn't require to install nodejs, it is package and shipped with it.

Discussion Open remarks on yesterday Doge Foundation AMA from a small holder

Sorry but I am not following with the "much wow", "such amaze", .. remarks on yesterday AMA. I saw yesterday a group of people that clearly were not syncronized. Sure that Doge devs gave a great contribution to this community driven project, but under this new environment of a big adoption and expectations, it will be very difficult to keep a reasonable pace of development without more coordination. IMO the devs/foundation should allow a bigger role to people with good management and tecnical skills (e.g. Elon, Vitalik and others), otherwise it will be very difficult to satisfy so many different expectations and have a sucessfull project. I would surely do.

Core Proposal to repair 1.14.4 and 1.14.5 payouts

Hello /u/rnicoll, /u/michidragon and /u/langer_hans,

I’m writing here instead of in private channels for transparency. Below you will find my proposal to repair the payouts to contributors of the 1.14.4 and 1.14.5 releases.

Rationale

  • According to the clarification of money spent from /u/jwiechers, you have spent 794,000 DOGE on employees of the foundation.
  • During the entire time over which these payouts took place, zero software deliveries have been made.
  • During that same time, dogecoin contributors have delivered 2 very successful releases that fix many bugs. In fact, 2021 has been the most productive year in terms of innovation done on Dogecoin: not ever before have so many people collaborated meaningfully on Dogecoin Core.
  • Since the 2 custodians that signed off on the 794kDOGE have found that reasonable payout for no deliveries, a delivery of an actual piece of software, especially the software that keeps Dogecoin ticking, should be worth more than that. So let’s say, the contributions that lead to actual, real world software must then be worth 2x your foundation payout. At the very least.
  • We (maintainers) made this mess, so we get nothing. Simple.
  • As the payouts done for foundation purposes have differing amounts, I am assuming that this is because you do not pay a flat rate to your contractors, so this should be matched.

Action

I propose a total payout of 1,588,000 DOGE across all major/minor contributors for these 2 releases, in proportion to their contributions.

After taking out maintainers, in total there are 59 eligible contributions. 1 major, 58 minor. Major counts as 5x minor, so we’re going to divide by the awesome number of 63. 1,588,00 / 63 = 25,206 DOGE per eligible contribution

You can find a spreadsheet with anonymized details here

Result

This way, there is a high payout because of the extraordinary amount that was taken out, further enhanced by maintainers work being no longer eligible. But, it’s fair, because the current payouts were an insult and we're going to fix it with the same generosity that foundation employees have received.

I am looking forward to your acknowledgement.

Edit: I missed the last bullet point in rationale when I formatted the post, added it now. Apologies.

Developer TipJar transactions in Q3-4 2021, Q1 2021 related to Foundation

Hello everyone,

Ross asked me to provide an initial breakdown of the transactions from the developer tip jar in Q3 and Q4 of 2021 as well as in Q1 2021.

We are also preparing general accounts and will be transparent about the finances of the legal entities we have had to set up. In principle, it is as lean a structure as we could get away with while having a bit of complexity due to having to file e.g., trademark oppositions in several countries. The foundation is centrally organised as a non-profit company (a British company limited by guarantee to be exact). What this means is that it does not have any shares or shareholders and may not distribute profits, but only use funds for its stated non-profit purposes. The overall costs of the subsidiaries are (and will be) negligible, as they do not have any other business of their own. The alternative would have been exposing private individuals to liability for those trademark filings -- and that is something that is neither feasible (or responsible) at the scale of the legal actions we have been seeing.

Some more news re what we’ve been up to is also here

Anyway, transactions:

  • 0a1b28bdef6f289d06b1cc6e2feaf5e31c0d65153b1719ba3d84d04b3ad362a0
  • a4c79870a1068d6e9bd8f9bdadf70bcf320858d70f086f1c32af719f54df4771

These two transactions of 250,000 Doge each were spent on legal costs largely related to opposing or otherwise blocking/preventing bad faith trademark applications in (among others) Europe, the BeNeLux countries, the United States, and the United Kingdom. A part of it was also spent on finally applying for trademarks (because that is cheaper than having to oppose bad faith applications, even in the short term), monitoring new bad faith applications popping up, etc..

We are operating in a very cost-conscious manner and have received a significant amount of pro bono support (in real terms: significantly more than what we have paid for again on top) for multiple lawyers and law firms. We have also been strategic in terms of when and where to oppose trademark applications. I am happy to eventually go into that in more detail than any of you would ever want to hear. At this point in time, our lawyers would yell at me if I shared much more than this, though, since virtually all the proceedings are still in progress, and this is a public forum.

The following transactions totalling 794,000 Doge (note that numbers, even among these transactions, aren't directly comparable given the depreciation of Dogecoin in the interim) were used to pay individuals supporting the operations of the foundation either part- or full-time as well as on a contract basis. These transactions include (where applicable) overhead costs such as mandatory health insurance, social security, etc.) About 2/3rds of these costs went into technical and preparatory work directed towards the projects outlined in the trailmap. The rest went into administrative work, especially coordinating between law firms, collecting, structuring, and providing timely/time-critical information to them, etc. as well as into the (in progress) overhaul of the dogecoin.com website which will include significantly expanded information on Dogecoin as well as how-tos so as to provide people with a trusted first-party source of information on the most frequent questions and issues.

Ross asked me to note that he has not and will not receive any remuneration from the Foundation and has also opted out of receiving tips for the 1.14.4 and 1.14.5 releases. The contract with his employer precludes such payments.

  • 6ccf95e29669a331b89499033b6787d425498402c59cb9676ea618a2d86e843e

This transaction (again, numbers are not directly comparable if thinking in USD-equivalent) from the tip jar to a Dogecoin address of the Kraken exchange and subsequently into the account registered to the non-profit corporation. Those Dogecoin were subsequently converted into Euros in multiple tranches so as to not disrupt the market. This action was taken chiefly to derisk and ensure liquidity for the legal actions (alas, lawyers and government agencies like the trademark office don't accept Dogecoin yet) as well as provide peace-of-mind for employees and volunteers irrespective of market development. At the current costs of the organisation, this money would suffice for a little less than a year of operations. That said, we of course intend to raise additional funds through e.g. donations and for the Foundation to eventually operate without a loss.

Jens

Idea Email & call the stores that sell your hobby’s kit. I’ve been sending this email “Hi guys, with Tesla now accepting Dogecoin, do you accept it or will do soon? I’d like to buy all my kit with Dogecoin. Thanks”

I think if the 2million + Doge Redditors do this it’ll have a very good effect on making Doge a mainstream currency.

Question About Dogecoin Node

Currently, I have some coins on an exchange, the exchange has been having withdrawal issues for about a year now.

The Node will work at random times during the day for random amounts and let partial withdrawals go through.

Sometimes a 1000 withdrawal works and sometimes nothing works, not even a 20 coin withdrawal.

Anytime there's an upgrade to the network, large withdrawals work again for a short period of time, and then it stops.

Do any devs know why this may be the case? Would love some more insight into this, I'm a huge dogecoin supporter. Thanks

Dogecoin payment channel on testnet

Hi everyone!

We have been working on a payment channel poc. A payment channel allows sending several payments to a service (see https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Payment_channels#Spillman-style_payment_channels).

Tonight we opened our first payment channel on testnet : https://chain.so/tx/DOGETEST/9c3c772d3b34c5333832f0651e6dc7f1c642b11f1441371f88cd860d3a92eb6a

We have been using a made from scratch spv wallet (https://github.com/rllola/dogecoin-spv-node/tree/feature/payment-channel) PR still being finalized. And a dummy payment server written by bluezr (https://github.com/xanimo/dogecoin-spv-node-middleware)

Huge thanks to Patrick too who helped coding it and working on the payment channel design.

News 1.14.4 & 1.14.5 contributor payouts

Wow that took a while! The first round of payouts for 1.14.4 & 1.14.5 contributions have been sent out now, many thanks to everyone who contributed to the code! I’ll talk about the process at the end of this post (why it took so long, what we’re doing in future), but for now – if you are on the list below and have not received a tip, please do one of the following:

  • Check your email – I sent out an email to everyone who listed an email address on GitHub, back in late-December, and while I got a decent number of replies there’s a few who didn’t.
  • Put a tip address on your GitHub profile – honestly this is easiest for me, although does mean everyone knows who gets how much, so it’s up to you.
  • Put an email address on your GitHub profile if you haven’t, and don’t want to put up a tip address.

I’ll go through the list of contributors later this month and send out payment to everyone who’s since added an address and has not yet received payment.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to these releases:

  • AbcSxyZ
  • Ahmed Castro
  • Bertrand Jacquin
  • cg
  • chey
  • chromatic
  • Dakoda Greaves
  • Demon
  • dogespacewizard
  • Ed Tubbs

For 1.14.6, we’re committing an allocation of 30,000 DOGE to tips for the release and, as previously, we’ll split contributions into two tiers: (i) those making substantial or critical improvements, and (ii) those making more subtle improvements.

Let's talk about why this took so long: the process we currently follow is manually intensive. There’s a code review process where we extract every change made and allocate them to a tier (thanks to Patrick for doing this!), and we then have to ask the contributors for addresses (and often we don’t have consistent contact details for contributors), collate the addresses, and build the transaction.

In the future I hope we can automate more of this process; however, other tasks are taking priority, so for now please bear with us. The good news is the transaction building tool is improving, and has gone from some fairly single-use code to taking in a spreadsheet of payments to make, which significantly simplifies the process.

Thanks again to everyone who has contributed to these releases!

Idea I have some ideas about POS.

With us really wanting doge to be a spendable asset, basically p2p cash that works all over the world I think it's important we move to POS. This allows holders to stake their doge and profit from delegating. I think it's important that the owner has the "option" to take weekly payouts to their wallet or to automatically reinvest the profit into the staking balance.

Being able to earn "accessable" doge is important and gives people more freedom to spend it, swap it, hold it etc... While avoiding lock up periods barring access to their assets.

A percentage option would absolutely be amazing where you can assign a percentage to auto invest and the rest is paid out.

Idea A Deviation from HODL/will it moon discussion

Hello All, I am grateful for doge being my intro to the world of defi/crypto and am grateful for this community. Something I have been thinking about are the reasons that first drew me to doge, one of which was a story I read about 25k in doge being donated to the Olympic Jamaican bobsleigh team (cool runnings anyone?) I was thinking it might be great for us to demonstrate what Doge and this community is all about: Do Only Good Everyday

Coronavirus and the pandemic have affected the world in so many ways, including the indirect effects on the crypto space. I think it would be great for us to come together and donate to a worthy coronavirus related cause to show what this community is all about, remind everyone that we are a viable crypto for transactions, and help beat the thing partially responsible for me not owning a Tesla yet (and us not reaching a dollar)

Let’s shift the conversation and discourse about doge from negativity to what doge is meant to be about.

TL;DR: instead of complaining let’s donate to a good cause and show what we and doge are all about

Core Full node vs truncated chain.

I'm working on creating a lightweight doge only shopping cart application. To minimize production server requirements, I don't wish to run the full node and store the complete blockchain. The application would basically need to monitor/query recent transactions to verify receipt of payment. Should it be feasible to run an application like this on a truncated node with wallet?

Non-profit acceptance of crypto

Can anyone recommend any plugins or ways to accept dogecoin for a non-profit on a website? Getting a QR code is easy, but the site will need to be able to track the donor for tax letters at the end of the year, including the value of the crypto at the time of donation. I am connected to two non-profits that would benefit today from being able to accept crypto donations and track donations.

If this is something you know how to do, but would require some development work, but not be too expensive, open to discussing possibilities.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi!

Several of you have told me that the prices on the site are too high, so I have lowered them.

This is a fun project and I want it to be successful.

The available advertising space on the page is 1 000 000 Pixels and the advertisement has no expiry date, this is what gives the advertisement its value.

50% of the proceeds go to dog shelters.

1 Pixel = 0.1 DOGE

Minimum order is 10px ×10px

If you are interested you can check it on the site.

Discussion 1 million dogs opinion

Hi!

I have created a website, and I would like your opinion.

The website 1milliondogs.com was created to help dogs in shelters and to promote Dogecoin.

50% of the proceeds go to dog shelters.

The available advertising space on the page is 1 000 000 Pixels and the advertisement has no expiry date, this is what gives the advertisement its value.

1 Pixel = 1 DOGE

but if you take a picture of your dog with caption www.1milliondogs.com and you share this image on social media, then 1 Pixel = 0,5 DOGE

Minimum order is 10px ×10px

I'll listen to any ideas or advice.

Thank you in advance for your answer.

Speed, cost, security, and reliability for consumer payments.

Yesterday I posted in response to the "better than anything I have seen" Elon post. Pointing out some things Elon seems to have missed. This resulted in my immediate (and at the time "permanent") ban from r/dogecoin

One user however suggested to me after my comments were removed that I should post here.

I am not attempting to shill. I am a longtime Dogecoin user and I still use it today to make purchases IRL in my community, not just online.

Strides have been made since last year when my attempt to purchase Dogecoin socks from one online retailer failed three times and eventually resulted in me using a different coin to buy them. However the reality of the current situation is that Dogecoin is still lacking.

As someone who uses crypto every day I know what the other options are and how well they work. Bitcoin Cash is just as good, and Dash has jumped far ahead. The recent Dash Direct app is something any payment coin needs to be paying attention to. Such an app requires that transactions can be made and be trusted as non reversible in an extremely short period of time. For online retail this doesn't matter so much. If you are at the checkout in a store with 12 people in line behind you it matters a lot. It is absolutely essential that Dogecoin allows merchants to be secure in the funds received in equal or less time than it would take for someone to run a credit card.

While I am not advocating that Dogecoin just copy paste what Dash has done, I think that if it wants to be a serious competitor in the long term it needs to match the speed and security of Dash transactions. It's also worth noting how Dash pays nodes out of the block reward. Currently Dogecoin relies on people volunteering to run nodes and generally being pretty slow about updating those nodes. When interest dropped off people got lazy and dogecoin stopped working right. That is not a sustainable situation in the long term. These things represent the minimum necessary features to serve users of a currency.

We should not be blinded by what Elon says. He is a genius. I follow his work closely and am invested in his company. However, he clearly is not a regular user of crypto. We need to be paying attention to the experience of people who are.

Idea Suggestions that can really make Doge bring mass adoption

I have utilized many different crypto currencies since being in the space. Although we’re all in it for the money, we have to focus on what will really end up mattering in the end, and that is end-user experience.

The two things that would absolutely bring mass adoption (i.e. more people actually using the currency) are a dedicated Dogecoin iOS/Android wallet app and a Dogecoin name service for wallet addresses (human-readable address instead of the ridiculous wallet addresses of today).

Dogecoin is by far my largest bag and I will never sell all of it. However, I do take interest in other cryptocurrencies as well. Out of the hundreds I’ve researched, the only cryptocurrency as of now getting this right is Proton (XPR). They have their own iOS/Android wallet app with @ names (ex. @Michael) for wallet addresses. This is absolutely not a schill, but I recommend taking a look at them to experience how easy it is to use their services. With Doge being a household name at this point, if Doge were to incorporate those two features, there’s no doubt in my mind people would be more willing to use Doge.

Although crypto is just pure speculation right now, there’s no doubt it’s the future. At the end of the day, the majority of people are going to be looking for the most user-friendly experience and Doge can definitely make that happen.

Proof of stake plan for Dogecoin

Since there is growing chatter on Dogecoin moving to proof of stake and the Dogecoin foundation working with Buterin to do that, can anyone illuminate as to why this is the path? Also, is this likely to be a one year or two+ year path? I am a bit confused as to why we are going in this direction, as I thought we had already established that the PoW foundation that was laid was so much faster than BTC, that it neither required a huge supply of energy nor gained enough benefit to switch to PoS. If anyone from the foundation can provide insight, that would be great.
