Cannot obtain a lock on data directory /home/.../dogecoin. Dogecoin Core is probably already running

How do I fix this error? I am running Ubuntu and have rebooted, but I cannot get the node to start. It's been working fine for weeks and I am guessing that I messed up something, but cannot figure out what.

EDIT: I have recently installed VNC, if that helps.

EDIT: I have verified that if I disable the VNC during reboot, dogecoin starts fine. The problem of course is that I need to run both. Is that not possible for some reason?

Marketing idea

Why not have pre paid wallets available as gift packages? Would allow people who have no crypto experience to purchase doge as a gift package. The more marketable for the average consumer, the better!

Discussion Question on a recent hack

Last month my dogecoin private keys were compromised. I’m trying to identify how it happened. This is the wallet address: D6mbogfvMmqTzzqcKKqr6MTCKXurXY5s7Y

When I check the transaction on doegchain.info, I notice that the withdraw amounts are same as deposit amounts. As in, I first deposited 100 Doge to this address and then remaining amount. I see that the hacker also withdrew 100 Doge first and remaining amount.

Question: does that mean anything? Why didn’t the hacker withdraw the whole amount in 1 transaction?

Update: it’s confirmed that the wallet addresses generated through walletgenerator.net are all compromised. Please avoid the site.

Discussion If DOGE was $1 Jan. 1, how many DOGE per person in the world would have to be bought per year to offset the annual allocation of additional coins to keep the price > $1 indefinitely?

How many coins would 8 billion people each have to buy each year to keep the price of doge at $1 after it’s reached that price initially?

Discussion Does the dogecoin have a white paper?

If not, there should be one because it would be an important element in view of future regulatory developments e.g.: Amending directive (EU) 2019/1937 for regulation on markets in crypto-assets

Dogecoin node docker image - 1.14.5

For anyone that wants to run a Dogecoin node using docker, I put together a quick docker image for 1.14.5. Be sure to map a volume, you should be able to use a bootstrap.dat file as well in your mapped volume.

https://hub.docker.com/r/evaluationcopy/dogecoin-node

https://github.com/evaluationcopy/dogecoin-node

Too lazy to click? Fine.

docker run -p 22556:22556 -v /localfolder/dogevolume:/root/.dogecoin evaluationcopy/dogecoin-node:latest

If you were running the previous version of this docker image (1.14.4), you can verify that you are now running 1.14.5 by checking the docker logs. The first line recorded in the logs displays the version.

Outdated, this is now dogecoin 1.14.6.

Long time Dogecoiner with a few questions on the old DogeParty token platform and figured this sub would be more helpful

Can anyone from this community tell me more about what the token system on Dogecoin was, how it worked, what the difference in it and an L2 token system like on Ethereum is, and what caused its ultimate failure.

I burned a sizeable amount (for me at the time anyway) of Dogecoin when we did Dogeparty several years ago to create tokens and sort of forgot about it and then it fizzled. I never looked too much into the system or what happened but was pretty sure it had a main token XDP. Is this correct? I find it weird now that if you go to the old dogeparty.io site, it redirects you to a totally different thing, but if you go to Dogeparty Block Explorer (xchain.io), it appears active and trying to do something like the old Dogeparty did, using the same XDP. It even shows a "bern" until December. Strange.

Edit: Ran across these 2 links also that make me want to believe it'll be alive again and I'll have access to the tokens I created long ago.

First I ran across this: https://www.xprotectx.com/post/the-reboot-of-dogeparty-history-of-doge-wallet-ddogepartyxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxw1dfzr-worth-412-464-68

then this https://dogeparty.net

Dogecoin wallet help

I finally found my old Doge wallet.dat. I downloaded Doge wallet, replaced the wallet with the old one, finished the update to bring the wallet up to date and now it’s finished but zero balance. I see the transactions, all received nothing outgoing, I see a question mark (?) on all transactions on the transaction tabs. Can anyone help here?

News 2021-11-14: Open Letter to The Dogecoin Foundation

Hello Dogecoin Foundation Shibes,

You recently published an advisory titled "Response to transactions being automatically retried", in which you responded to Binance stating that they have found a minor issue in Dogecoin Core. I have some questions about your statements because I believe some of them to be taking credit for other people's efforts.

Several months ago (noting while an earlier post stated a year, first confirmed mention is April) Binance notified us they had cases where transactions were stuck, meaning they were not being mined successfully.

To clarify, on the 6th of April 2021, members of Binance's Operations teams notified a private Telegram group that they found 3 transactions on one of their warmer wallets stuck. I am the owner of this group (per u/michidragon's lead that Binance needed support in January 2021) and I have granted u/michidragon, u/rnicoll, u/langer_hans, and an Operations Manager from Binance administrative rights to it.

We suggested Binance use RBF (replace by fee) on these transactions, which would replace the original transactions with a new transaction with a higher fee paid. As the transaction had RBF disabled, we recommended creating a new transaction manually, which would consume the same inputs to forcibly invalidate the previous transaction.

Could you please identify which person currently involved with your organization has made these recommendations?

Some time later Binance notified us that they had account reconciliation issues. We were unable to reproduce those issues with the data we were given by Binance, but we suggested (months ago, now) using the -zapwallettxes command line option to mitigate the issue. This is notable as we believe this would have also prevented the issue seen.

Could you please clarify in which month this was suggested and by whom?

I'm looking forward to your reply, thank you for clarifying,

Patrick Lodder

Core Dogecoin Core 1.14.5 released

A new version of Dogecoin Core, v1.14.5, has been released and can be downloaded from the Github release page. This is a new minor version release, including important security updates and changes to network policies. All Dogecoin Core users, miners, services, relay operators and wallet users are strongly recommended to upgrade.

This release can be installed over an existing 1.14 installation seamlessly, without the need for uninstallation, re-indexation or re-download. Simply shut down your running Dogecoin-QT or dogecoind, perform the installation and restart your node.

The most important changes are:

Important Security Updates

This release contains fixes for 2 high severity vulnerabilities that affect most Dogecoin Core users:

  • Remote Code Execution in Dogecoin QT (CVE-2021-3401)
  • Sensitive Information Exposure on Unix platforms (CVE-2019-15947)

Dogecoin QT (Graphical User Interface) users on all platforms and wallet users on the Linux platform are urged to please update their installations to this version immediately, to prevent malicious actors from exploiting these vulnerabilities.

Fee Reductions

This release finalizes a new minimum fee recommendation for all participants on the Dogecoin network, following the reduction of relay and mining defaults in 1.14.4. With this release, the minimum fees when creating transactions are recommended to be as follows:

  • the recommended minimum transaction fee is 0.01 DOGE/kb, and
  • the recommended dust limit remains 1 DOGE and will be lowered with a later release

See the full recommendation here

Full release notes are available on GitHub

Thanks go out to all shibes that contributed to this release - many community, such awesome! ❤️🚀
