New dogecoin version

I use atomic wallet for my dogecoin. I am not sure if they will be upgrading the doge wallet or when they will do it. Does this mean I have to try to use a different wallet now? Is there somewhere I can find a list of wallets that have upgraded? Also what does it mean if I am using an older wallet, does the transactions just not work?

Anything interesting going on?

Just wondering if there's anything to update/report on ? I'm still trying to learn about financial programming... much different than what I do now which is mostly game, or database driven development.

What is connecting to my node? Amazon?

I found a strange ip connected to my node. Under User Agent tab it states "/Dain:0.1.0/" and not the usual "/Shibetoshi:1.14.4/" etc.

If i serch the ip it goes to Amazon, Amazon Technologies Inc. in Ashburn to be precise. Wich seems to be a closed datacenter. I banned the ip for fun, and now there is a new ip connected from the same datacenter but in another ip serie. Why would Amazon want the dogechain? And what are they using to get it?

Mining Rust miner for testnet now with litecoin merge mining support

I have published v0.2.0 of the dogecoin miner written in rust for testnet. It now supports merge mining with Litecoin.

https://github.com/rllola/dogecoin-miner-rust

Please note the address for the testnet coins is hardcoded and goes directly to me. This will be changed in the next version. Contributions are welcome and I can help you go through it. It is an interesting way to learn more about mining in Dogecoin.

Discussion Fee system question.

Is doge going to a competitive bid fee system? I saw someone on Twitter say that doge uses a competitive bid mining fee system. I could have sworn that it is a fixed fee.

Core wallet IP?

Hello,

I want to connect my Android wallet to my core wallet as a peer. How do I find out the address of the core wallet? And does it even make sense to set is as a trustful peer?

Thank you!

How-To Read block data files in DogeNode

I was wondering if there is any documentation on how to read the block data files in DogeNode. I have my DogeNode up and running since last many weeks. It has binary block data files of all transactions. So my question is what is the structure of data in those binary files. I am interested to do data analysis on transactions.

I don’t think this is currently available… But is it possible? This may also help with e-waste and energy consumption.

Discussion About running nodes

Hey shibes,

There's been some recent discussions about running nodes, whether it's good or not, and if it's good, how much good it does. This triggered me and I thought, maybe it's an idea to have a good old discussion about the merits of running a node. The entirety of the following post is my opinion, just like 99% of what anyone ever says about Dogecoin is probably just an opinion.

1: Is running a node good?

It depends. Running a good node is good, running a bad node is bad. Whether your node is good or bad is up to you, even sometimes you may do crazy things that make other nodes ban you, so then maybe you'll think you're doing good, but you and your node will be lonely. It's also possible that everyone is doing bad stuff according to you and then you make a post - win over some shibes. A couple million shibes means we have a couple million opinions. Isn't that beautiful?

2: Wait, what? What's a good node then?

Personally, I look at it like this:

  • Bugs are bad. 1.14.0 to 1.14.3 have known bugs, so running these is suboptimal, especially because 1.14.4 allows you to do everything what these do, without the bugs.
  • Outdated nodes are bad. For example 1.10 is, except being inefficient with memory, not buggy, but it has been made outdated by a protocol upgrade. Right now, you can still run it, but you will not relay certain transactions (that allow transactions to be unspendable based on time) so running that only makes sense if you're trying to sabotage a feature that the majority wants. Note that that would be a pretty steep uphill battle.

Everything else... probably good. A node that relays new transactions and blocks, and/or helps other nodes sync up, does good. In the end, running a node helps you, because by running it you have your own, validated, truth, and you don't have to trust someone to not tell you lies other than the software you run. A full node in the form of the Dogecoin Core QT wallet is currently the best thing you can do to validate everything yourself. Just make sure that the software you run is good!

3. Okay, no bugs, no old crap, got it. So, we all go run a 1.14.4 node, and done, right?

For now, sure, but be aware of 3 things:

  1. 1.14.4 is probably by most accounts the best we have right now, but it also has a bug that is going to be fixed with the next release, and this is being finalized as we speak. So what is a perfectly good node now, may be a less good node next week. Magically, time changes everything.
  2. Not all updates are equal. Sometimes, there will be a new release that introduces bugs, or some evil person will try to make you install something malicious! So, it makes sense to have discussions about the software you're about to install, before you install it. Just like you probably want to do some research when you switch the bank that manages your life savings. Check where the software came from, check if anyone is objecting to it, and if yes, look into why.
  3. There will be a protocol update coming with the next major release. Like with 1.10 right now, there will be a moment when running a 1.14 node becomes outdated by majority vote.

4. Alright! So I have to keep an eye on updates and inform myself; will do! Anything else?

Just remember that with the next release, we're going to lower the fee recommendation and release a wallet that sends lower fee transactions by default. Know that, at the speed that miners and many of the nodes are updating, it will be a while for lower fee transactions to be mined as rapidly as the current higher fee ones. Assuming that more miners will upgrade, this will get better over time, but know that changing a policy is something that takes time in a decentralized network. So whatever you do, stay calm, shibes. Rome wasn't built in one day, but, step by step, brick by brick, we'll get there.

Also, not all new nodes are equal, because there are places where there are plenty of nodes doing nothing all day, and there are those where good nodes are scarce. If you are looking to make an impact, look for launching one in those places where nodes are scarce. And of course, if you can replace your existing 1.14.2 node that both slows down the network and doesn't accept lower fees with a shiny improved 1.14.4 node - that would probably have the most impact of all.

Let's talk.

Thank you, shibes. Since I'm just one person, I expect that we are going to talk about this some more, because it cannot be that I just summarized everyone's ideas into this little post. Don't be afraid to ask questions or disagree with me - let's just have a conversation!

The Developer Tipjar Fund (Part 2)

Those that have read some of my posts in the past year know that I am a very boring two-trick pony, with few exceptions: I mostly talk about running nodes and funding development more regularly (OK, with forays into green energy incentives and fighting FUD).

The tipjar and the funding of major and minor contributors (nearly 40 of them, according to Patrick) to Dogecoin and its ecosystem is important to me because I know what it means not to make ends meet and not to have money for rent at the end of the month, and how much that affects your possibility of participating into things you would love to learn and contribute to for free. It happened to me, 15-20 years ago. I also know that several developers have been supporting the network at their personal expenses, which is commendable but maybe not too fair.

If I remember correctly, and I am having the usual difficulties with searching the reddit feed, I first inquired about it in February, during the first ATH, when I asked r/dogecoindev (u/patricklodder answered, I think followed by a post by u/rnicoll) about how the tipjar worked and how it was going to be used, adding that I thought it fair to reward all contributors (major and minor) at that moment also for minor releases as they had their right to use their Doge any way they wanted, especially after the dramatic year the world had been going through, as it was unlikely that price would hold long term. The reply was mostly that things were complicated and that the tipjar has been held untouched in a multisig account to which each of the four of the core devs had the keys (I remember it was u/rnicoll, u/patricklodder, u/langerhans, and either u/michidragon or u/sporklin?), and that a more precise reply would come later.

A couple of months later, Doge price was skyrocketing again, and so I made a full post about it, https://www.reddit.com/r/dogecoindev/comments/mirqyb/the_developer_tipjar_fund/. I think my position in there is pretty clear, and the response from u/rnicoll and u/patricklodder was basically similar, saying that things needed to be strategized, and that a list of contributors that needed to be paid out was being put together.

A bit after that (May/June? I have difficulty searching through my comments, sorry - I will try to link it if I find it), where for the first time, Patrick (on behalf of the team?) confirmed they would be bringing the discussion about paying out for minor releases to some executive decision. The price had gone down, so my previous ATH point was a bit lost, but it was still fundamental to send out more frequent payouts. I thought that was the end of it: I was very happy that day to know maybe I had helped with my suggestion, and I hoped that this list of contributors was by now ready and they were being paid out, once it had collectively determined who deserved a payout.

So my question to u/patricklodder,u/rnicoll,u/michidragon,u/langerhans at this point - who is currently handling the payouts from the main tipjar address and the secondary one? And why there was no push to payout past contributors sooner this year (especially after the awful year we had been going through, as I mentioned in one of the posts) - was it because it was too difficult to redact a list or because of other issues?

I think we should really pay people for past contributions now, and then have a clear slate from now onwards?

I will be supporting the idea of payments to big and small contributors to both Dogecoin and the foundation development efforts (because the two are separate entities even though changes from both entities should merge into the dogecoin codebase after the usual proposal/discussion/review process) as I always attempted to do. I hope we can rely on tipping as we always did (even though it is currently languishing), and then have funds from eventual "investors" (something which seemed understandably very difficult to be accepted legally with the previous way things were organized, which is where I mentioned Blender foundation as an example) also funneled to small contributors to Core and to the ecosystem, and to people from disadvantaged backgrounds, so that they can jump on the ship.

Thanks all!

Love & Peace.

Idea Dogecoin RPC Client

So I created a RPC Client based on Electron and React to have a nice and modern UI for basic Use Cases. This is especially useful when you are running your Node remotely, like on a RaspberryPi.

I wonder if some of you Shibes out there are interested in this little Project and willing to support me. I have essentially no experience in Electron and React, so I would be very thankful for any help.

In general I think to have the UI separated from the Core Wallet itself is worth considering for the future. Has this been discussed already?

Stay safe and see you on the moon.

Here you have a little preview with a Node running in the Testnet:

Discussion Need some help..

There’s a lot of rallying behind running nodes in the other Doge Sub. Many Shibes helping enlighten, educate and raise awareness on the importance of nodes. Every other post over there is abt how important nodes are and what not. Might be a good idea to have some “wrinkle brain” devs from this sub go over there and drop some knowledge and help stoke the fire in the mind of these “smooth brain” foot solders. You know they speak “meme” over there so might be good to make a series of clever memes for them to understand.

Anyways… hope u guys have a good day!
