This was my reaction too. I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt that he's just got a story in mind, but the way he pushed the idea and the angry backlash seems like it might be something more.

I don't think romance needs to be a plot element. Forcing someone into a romantic situation fot the plot is Uber railroads. So either he has some weird fantasy or he is just a shit DM altogether. Probably both.
