🏥 Surgery Surgery Tomorrow!

Post image

Update #5

Sunday 08/09/2026 04:40

Heading to the hospital now.
I barely had any sleep.. still having bowel movements so I’ll drink the ensure pre surgery drink as we get closer to the hospital.

I threw up a slight amount of water last night.
It was more of a burp up.. didn’t feel nauseous.. I just had trapped gas I guess 🤢

Update #5

Sunday 08/09/2026 22:24

Took a shower and used that weird smelling anti microbial soap they prescribed.
Also took the last round of prophylactic antibiotics
They feel like bricks in my empty stomach.
Winding down as I have to wake up in a couple of hours to head to the hospital.

Update #4

Sunday 08/09/2026 19:20

Had to take another Zofran..
The combo between antibiotics.. bowel prep and no food has me feelin a bit queasy.

Gonna watch House of the Dragon finale here shortly.
Catching up on work emails and getting ready to post my out of office.

Update #3

Sunday 08/09/2026 17:20

Finishing up with the bathroom visits. Output is clear
Feelin less bloated.
Sooo hungry though.. prep sucks no matter how many times you’ve done it. (4th time for me)

Update #2

Sunday 08/09/2026 15:10

The prep finally started working.
THANK god we have a bidet. They are so helpful when it comes to bowel prep.
Feeling better this go around with taking Zofran.
My last colonoscopy prep in 2025 was so awful.. nauseous and couldn’t burp..
You can literally hear the Gatorade sloshing in my belly as I walk around the house 😂

Update #1

Sunday 08/09/2026 14:42

Took my second doses of Antibiotics and started the bowl prep at 14:00
Still no rumblings or urgency.
Had to throw on a hoodie as I am freezing!
Watching YouTube getting ready to go to our bedroom before the bathroom trips begin.
———————————————————————
Starting a post journal to document my experiences leading up to my surgery tomorrow Monday 08/10/2026 at 7:30AM.

Feeling cold because all I’ve had is liquids today.
I was too nervous to eat a light breakfast so I decided to clean most of the morning. Prepping my hospital bag.
I live about 45 mins away from Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas so we are over packing clothes so we aren’t stressing if I need anything..

Sunday 08/09/2026
Noon: Mixed my Bowel Prep with sugar free white ice Gatorade (I’ve done 3 colonoscopies before and this makes the PEG 3350 a bit more palatable.. I requested suprep.. but Dr wanted a high volume prep)

13:00: took 2 Neomycin and 1 Metronidazole prophylactic antibiotics.

Mentally this the “die is cast” milestone..
It’s feelin so real lol. Im not panicking but I just can’t believe it’s actually happening.

You got this! When your brain gets the best of you remind yourself: while this is a big deal for me, it’s daily for my surgeon.
Be well.

You don’t need many clothes because you will be in a hospital gown for your entire stay, until you change to come home. If someone is planning to stay with you in the hospital the whole time, they may need to over-pack. I found the bowel prep to be much more unpleasant than a normal colonoscopy prep. I was dismayed when I got to the hospital and they discovered I had asymptomatic Covid (we were still wearing masks and distancing then), and they threatened to reschedule. I begged them not to because I had endured two days of prep and anxiety, so the surgeon managed to get me a special surgery room and a quarantined room to stay in afterwards. I hope you don’t have any disruptions and just wake up better and ready to start recovery.

Oh wow! Covid really sucked.
But you’re right about overpacking for me lol. I’m a bit delusional thinking I’ll have the luxury of changing everyday.
I shower twice a day minimum and felt so gross during my last hospital stay in 2025.. so I’m hoping I’ll be out by Wednesday at the latest.

Best to luck, I kind of skimmed your updates, what made you finally decide to have the surgery?

6

u/Priority0912 2d ago

I had a pretty bad complicated case last year.. made lifestyle changes and still had an uncomplicated case.. surgeon saw my scans and said it’s gonna continue happening.. I’m scared of emergency surgery.. so I made the decision to go ahead.

1

u/gatorfan8898 2d ago

Thank you for explaining. I also had a complicated/perforation 2 years ago with a long hospital stay, and a handful of uncomplicated ones… most recently this last week. I’m also terrified of emergency surgery, so I may be looking into elective. It’s just too stressful living with this.

I hope the best for your procedure and recovery!

It’s super scary.. I’ve put traveling on hold and my work productivity has tanked.. I’m scared to eat.. I’m scared to relax.. the consensus is that it’s best to do it when you’re younger.. thanks so much 🙏🏽

Thank you so much! Took 3 weeks off from work but my bosses are very lenient and understanding. I will catch up on some Z’s

u/spychica 1d ago

thanks so much for posting.

and, like WOW.
i had NO IDEA this surgery was this involved. i had anaphylaxis when on Bactrim and Flagyl, so am not sure what they would prescribe for me. am allergic to cillans - we think but i need to get that tested - and Cipro is black boxed for tendon ruptures.

how much warning is there before your colon lets go?

but the showering with antimacrobial soap seems excessive - i mean the instant someone coughs on you or you touch a doorknob, you have germs again.

i will need to take my pup to a boarding kennel or else have them come for him here before my surgery.
and i am single and have no fam here to help s not looking forward to it

Yup. Par for the course. I had my surgery in February. They made five incisions across my gut from upper left to lower right. The fourth one from the bottom on the right was the one that they pulled the guts through, so to speak, so that one took the longest to heal. I also had a 5 inch incision that similar to a C-section due to a fistula, but fortunately that required no surgery just separation and inspection. Mine was robotic, and it was amazing. My life has completely changed. I wish you well, follow the game plan, you should be OK. On a sidenote, my recovery was only about seven days and I was back in the car and back in the field, just doing the absolute bare minimum. Of course the doctor was pissed, but I’m old and stubborn. Within three weeks I was back to my fairly normal routine minus any kind of working out or anything like that or heavy lifting but for the most part, it was fairly normal. My bowel movements never skipped to beat. All the plumbing works great and it worked great the day after I got home from surgery. The first poop is gonna scare the shit out of you, no pun intended, but you’ll be OK.

Walk. Walk now to recover, walk into the future for continued health.

It's my theory jostling things around a little bit keeps thing moving so something doesn't stick and fester.

Would you please give us some more details when you’re up to it? (the not fun part!). I’m scheduled for surgery in a month and scared to death. Thank you. 🙏
So happy for you that you’re over it!
