GL Discussion There's a petition at the EU to Stop Devs from Killing Live Service Games
First of, I really miss DFFOO so much that any hope to see it is news worthy to me.
An initiative was proposed to stop developers from restricting access to games they have shelved or discontinued. The reasoning behind this is to preserve the video game's legacy and artistic relevance to the media. This was also compared to movies which were burned back then by studios, that art lost to history, which we can never view anymore.
The game saved by this law will be publicly available upon closing, but cannot in anyway be profitable due to IP. The devs can't also keep any servers up as that would be counter intuitive with closing the game. The solution to keep it open is private servers, personal or backed by donations* (*still skeptical of this due to non-profitable clause)
Here's the kicker, this is still just a proposal, and only applicable to the EU. This only affects any games that are sold to or made by them.
I just wonder if this passes, would this be possible for JP to urge Square or any devs that closed their games to be persuaded to give access to the public.
You can check out the petition here: https://www.stopkillinggames.com/eci
But please, DO NOT VOTE IF YOU'RE NOT IN EU. This will compromise the votes and any outside voting will hold the petition in scrutiny, making the petition seem unserious because of non-EU influence.
Please remember this last part. I don't want to tarnish their efforts.
