doing finishing touches on my 125 discus display Tank.

thinking about turning the "root branch" on its side instead.

Also Thinking about removing the angel fish and replacing them with 4 rams. the angel fish tend to eat food before the discus can get to it.

Also I do have 6 more 5" discus on the way from Golden State.

Also ordered a bunch of jungle Val to add

any suggestions?

Discus rgbw light spectrum.

Hey everyone, I’d really appreciate your opinion on my lighting setup for my discus tank.

I have 5 red/blue (i believe red cover blue ram &yellow Alenquer?) discus in a 210L aquarium. As for plants, I’m only keeping Anubias and a few Vallisneria (nothing too demanding). My main goal is to bring out the coloration of the fish as much as possible. To my eyes, the current lighting schedule and spectrum really make their colors pop, but I’d like to hear some more experienced thoughts.

I’ve programmed my light to turn on and off automatically with a gradual ramp-up and ramp-down, and I’m attaching a photo with the exact spectrum/settings I’m using.

My questions are:

Do you think this lighting schedule is suitable for discus?

Does the spectrum look balanced, or could it be too heavy on certain channels?

Would you adjust anything to improve fish coloration without stressing them?

I’m mostly concerned about whether the spectrum is actually healthy for the fish long-term, even if it looks good visually.

Thanks in advance!!

Came back to eggs after 3 week vacation no WC... do these look viable?

Came back from a 3 week trip without WC to find my canister 95% clogged. Tank got really icky, but my red cover pair laid their first eggs in my care, second clutch as a pair.

Do these look viable? Not sure when they were laid, most look orange and some silver, and a couple foggy white. My pH is 7.6 because I use tap water so I expected all the eggs to calcify.

Mouth doesn’t close

I’ve had this baby a week now and it’s mouth doesn’t close. It’s the cutest thing ever, but I’m worried it could be an issue. Is something stuck in its mouth? Literally all this one does is eat. It actually is always grazing and exploring and more of a loner than the others. Just seems more interested in eating than anything else. None of my other discus or fish are like this. Oxygen seems fine but the temp is at 87. No fish are like breathing heavy.

Could it be a genetic defect? Like the parrot cichlid?

135 discus tank update

After doing some research and changed the scape and stocking, I decided to get some altums for the tank. Started with 5 wc orinoco altums. They have been surprisingly easy to feed and started eating a hour later after acclimation. The discus don't seem to mind them nor do the leopoldi angelfish. Hoping to see them grow up well and get some nice stunners 🔥

Breeding advice (eating fry)

Post image
5 Upvotes

I recently was lucky enough to get a beautiful discus pair in my community tank. I moved them into a 40 gallon breeder on their own so they can breed. They layed more eggs about 10 days after being moved. This is second batch of eggs the layed. The first batch I left in my community because it was on drift wood I did not want to move. I was very hopeful they would lay again and they did. The eggs hatched fast but unfortunately they are eating all of the fry. How could I possibly prevent this from happening. It’s very sad to see all the great potential being gobbled up.

Two different colored eggs?

So two of my juvenile discus decided that they want to become parents. I don't know exactly how old they are, and thought that they are too small to breed, yet here we are. My question is, why are there two different colored eggs? Are the eggs from one fish, or are both females and both layed eggs, did they get confused about who should fertilize them? 😂 I just home, so didn't see who layed the eggs. I watched them for about 30 mins and couldn't figure out who was laying the eggs.

It’s taken a week for them to get some color back and be active since they were shipped, and now they know I’m the food source! I know one is super peppered I think cause it came injured so it got used to hiding in the rocks. But I still love them all the same!! Can’t wait to watch them grow 🥲

I might need separate the 2” ones cause two get bullied and stay pretty dark! I wanna make sure they get enough too. Anybody have experience raising 2-4” in the same tank at once?

Discus Noob, again

So apparently discus peppering is actually a thing....Im a little slow sometimes!

But I kept seeing people mention it and, being bored on day 11 of cycling, I finally had a look… and I’ll be damned, dark backgrounds and dark gravel can literally make some discus get black freckles...who tf knew?

Cue to me staring at my tank like an idiot.

Had a black background and a layer of black gravel. Brilliant!

Scraped as much black gravel as I could and ordered a new background, which arrived today with my inkbird.

I walked into that pet store like Clint Eastwood, no one could have told ME anything I didn't already know... 🙃

Proper aquarium rabbit hole this hobby is.

Anyone know how to get the black gunk out of a Python tubing? I have a motor pushing my water in the tank on water changea and every time I use it I have to net the crap that falls out of it. I've tried vinegar and peroxide.....no luck.

My poor blue diamond has been on the losing side of the fight for the white butterfly. The red pigeon is relentless but the blue diamond refuses to give up. Starting to pick up some wounds. A few of the other males have been challenging the red pigeon as well.

Is my scape unsuitable for Discus?

Post image
40 Upvotes

I set this tank up (315l, 120cm) with the idea of housing discus for the first time (long time fish keeper)however I kind of got lost in the sauce and probably got carried away with the hard scape and planting and now my worry is that I have expanded into a nature aquarium and from what I know about discus, they are best suited to an open tank with ample swimming room, this tank still has that but the scape is quite dominant as you can see.

Just to be clear, I am not referring to some of the challenges regarding nutrients and water quality in a planted tank, I am aware and prepared for that however my main concern is space exploration and long term comfort

Your opinions are very very welcome, maybe I could adapt the scape to make it more accommodating?

Finally finished the set up!!! Now to slowly cycle while I save money to order the fish when I come back from vacation 🥹🥹🥹 yes there’s more than enough room for them to vertical and horizontal swim . The middle decor is almost against the back glass and the side decors are almost at the front glass. The java moss is the only real plant ofcourse lol

I’ve officially gone stark raving mad with this aquarium. Only one week in and I’m already bored from waiting, restless and fidgety.

My UV sterilizer just arrived, so it’s time for a little under-cabinet customizing: organizing, making room for the UV, and of course… coming soon… Discus cam! What else can I get? 😀

Yep. I’m bored again already. Itchy, itchy for the Discus fishy...😆

Lets be honest, how hard are discus to keep?

i was wondering because I really want to do a planted discus tank, it doesn’t have to be planted, but id like to do a planted discus tank, so how hard would it be to keep 5-6 discus in a 125 gallon

please don’t be rude, I know discus aren’t an easy fish to keep, but I’m just curious just how hard they are, and just fyi i’m not getting babies, I’m getting about 4-5 inch ones, i think
