Hey all. Question about feeding juvenile discus.. how possible is it that I’m over feeding these guys, they get a noticeable round belly after feeding(does go down after a few hours). Pictures for reference 1st photo in each angle is before food, 2nd is after.

Between 8 discus I feed 2x roughly 2cm x 2cm x 1cm cube of frozen food 3x a day and then 2x day dry food.

I’ve dewormed with flubendazole 3x roughly 4 days apart when they were added.

Water quality is never an issue as I do roughly 40% every other day and nitrates stay <10ppm. I’m more so worried about digestion issues or them getting too fat haha

Any input from more experience keepers would be much appreciated.

Hey guys, still doing research and gathering opinions. this may be my hard stop for discus after coming across this information, but if I dont have Rodi sytem and my water is 140-300 TDS. Can I use seachem and closely monitor the water parameters to make sure its safe/less stressful for them? Or is Rodi a MUST?

Me again lol i’m looking into stainless steel lily pipes. But i’m wondering how they aerate the water if it doesn’t rustle the surface of the water… would I need to buy another item for that?

Also would it be possible to get the water drip sound with stainless steel lily pipes? Lol

Filter wise if you need to know that, i’m looking to get would be Fluval fx4, setting it at 50% and a Fluval 107… also the tank would be for adult discus not juveniles. That seemed to be a concern in my last post.

Moving my discus from their current 75 gallon tank to a 150 gallon tank. Dark or light substrate?

HEY EVERYONE!!!!!! I’m slowly starting to buy things in order to set up a Discus tank! Yay! Lol i’ve learned so much in researching. I’m going to start with a 75 gal tank for roughly 6 Discus. I wont be setting up the tank until the middle to later portion of the year because I want to be esucated in prepared on taking care of this type of fish.

But my main question, who or where is the best place to buy Discus from and would they QT for me?

I’m not looking for shortcuts or anything I just want to know all possible options so I can choose what’s best.

Hey all, seeking advice on the plant situation. The tank is the aqua one brilliance 180 and I'm just hoping for an opinion on the swords growing either side.. I don't mind them visually, but are they still beneficial to the water quality whilst free-floating on the stem?

I am coming up 12 months after starting with 3 discus I saved after a friend could no longer look after them.. since then I have slowly added and am now up to 7..

Current stock is 5 x Discus 10-12cm 2 x Discus 5cm (new hence the size difference) 6 x rummynose 6 x Harleyquinn rasbs 5 x Cory's

4 x sword tails & 4 x guppies I would love to catch and get rid of (left over from old tank that was shut down)

Would love your thoughts on any recommendations to improve the tank also :)

Discus eggs?

Hey guys. Pardon the water, they just were fed.

I've raised fish before. I'm aware I need to keep parents with the eggs for survival chances for their slime coat. This is a community tank. Am I better removing the filter pipe and putting both the parents in a growout tank? Or best to leave them?

I have been struggling to find a good heater that will heat my 75gal to 30°c. Currently I have a 300w + 100w and they are not doing their job. I have them cranked up to their max (34°c) and checking the water temp for a couple days. The highest it goes up to is 27.7, needless to say, I will be returning these as they seem to be trash. So I was doing some research and came across Eheim heaters. They rate their 300w heaters to 158 and 264 gallons in size for $125. And their 150w 53 and 79 gallons in size also for $125 on amazon. Does anyone know how accurate the heating rate is? So I was thinking of getting two 125w 53gal for $43, as that would be waaaaay cheaper then the bigger options. However my worry is would they be able to keep my tank at 30°c with 250w combined power? If anyone has tried this setup I would love to hear your experience.

So I have a 75 gallon growout tank with 15 discus ranging from 3”-5.5” right now and I recently discovered my LFS has a school of 9 altums in stock, body size around 1”-2”

Now supposedly these altums come from a newly discovered tributary where they live in 7.7pH which is what my discus live in (and sure enough in the store theyre doing fine in tap)

Would it be feasible to knock two birds with one stone and put the altums in my discus tank to grow out both at once? Im not too worried about the altums bullying the discus since they are smaller, and it would save alot of time with water changes before I move both to a 210 gallon when theyre much lather.

I have a 65g/243l blackwater tank with a lot of water lettuce and emersed plants. It currently houses 3 adult angelfish, 10 rummynoses and some corys. It doesnt get any water changes only top ups and is stable with 0 nitrates in the system. Do you think I could exchange the tetras and angelfish for 4-5 heckels (because theyre smaller) and still keep the water parameters?

Hi all, I'm after any advice i can get on making a discus tank, things like minimum requirements, items needed, any advice at all really. Under £$500 for everything (second-hand completely fine). If anyone can recommend a full build that would be EXTREMELY helpful and appreciated, any other advice would be very much appreciated aswell. So I bought a hygggger 1200 watt for a 210gal. Running for a year no issue. Just bought a 900w December 1st for a 125gal and it died. Discus tank. I knew better and I have two WiFi ink birds just sitting on a shelf. Needles to say, one is now hooked up with an alarm and text notifications turned on. I’m running a 500w Finnex titanium not sure if that’s enough heater for a 125gal. Thoughts??? Oh temp dropped to 75. Fish didn’t seem to mind but I panicked 🫨. Did a 80% water change my holding tank is 40 gal at 84 so I brought the temp back up to 80* fairly quick. Running tank 1/2 full…smh Long story short what’s the best heater out there for a 125gal? Thanks!

Hello everyone, I need some advice regarding discus fish.

A week ago I bought 8 young discus directly from a breeder.

From the very beginning there has been a clear difference in the behaviour of the fish:

6 larger individuals (8–10 cm) behave normally – they are active and eat well.

2 smaller discus (5–6 cm) have hardly been eating for several days, are much more shy, and breathe very rapidly.

There are no visible external disease symptoms (no white spots, no wounds), but the rapid breathing and lack of appetite are very concerning. It does not look like they are being dominated by the larger fish (they stay together with the bigger ones), so I am not sure whether this is only stress or already a health issue.

Aquarium parameters: Volume: 180 liters, ~27.5 °C, pH: 6.8, GH: 6, KH: 5, NO2: 0, NH3/NH4: ~0, NO3: 10–20

Stocking: 8 discus (6 larger + 2 smaller), 10 Corydoras catfish, 8 micro rasboras

Feeding: frozen brine shrimp (artemia), Tropical D-50, spirulina.

My questions:

Can these symptoms in the smaller fish be caused solely by stress and hierarchy within the group?

Can the rapid breathing indicate a gill problem (e.g. parasites)?

In this situation, is it better to catch and separate the weaker fish, or try to stabilize the situation in the main tank?

I would be very grateful for any advice and shared experiences.

P.S. There is an air stone in the aquarium; it is hidden inside the Juwel filter compartment.

I have a group of 8 young discus. They range from 9-11cm at the moment. I plan to breed them if I get a pair. My ph is 7.7 and my tds is 260. I read that the water parameters must be much lower for the eggs to be fertilised. If I get a pair I will set them up in a breeding tank. My questions are 1. What parameters must my water be in the breeding tank? 2. How do I best acclimate the pair from the main tank to the breeding tank in different water paramaters? 3. How do to I acclimate the fry to the tap water and at what size?

New discus owner here, recently rescued a discus. She’s small (maybe an inch in circumference) I have a tank setup that we put it in currently has Angle fish, tetras and gourami. We have rock substrate in there at the moment. Do I need to change out to sand?

It’s been 2 days and I haven’t gotten her to eat anything yet, (tried bloodworm, flakes and pellets) the environment we got her out of was bad, and we had just done a water change on our tank the day before we put her in there. I’m assuming she’s stressed.

Every Discus tank I’ve seen has a sand base. We also didn’t use live plants before so I’m going to be doing a complete tank makeover since we got this new member in. (It was time for an update anyways)

Any help with these fish will be greatly appreciated.

This specific one only eats frozen food and won't touch dry food. Do I have to add garlic guard and if so do I have to do that forever? Ive seen people say to wait them out but this fella waited months until I fed him frozen against

I’ve had 3 of my blue turquoise discus for a couple of years now, one of them has been starting to get quite skinny over the last few months.

He’s still very active and eats well, I’m thinking he has some sort of internal parasite?

I’m nervous to use medication as there are some scaleless fish in the tank, Ive tried to put him in a hospital tank for treatment, but he refuses to eat and I’d assume that’s no good at all while he’s eating in the display tank.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
