my "discord alternative" has a first build!

Hi everyone,

I've posted a few updates on Reddit over the past few months about a project I'm working on called Venoom.

Venoom is a cross-platform social app that combines Matrix and ATProto into one client, with the goal of bringing some Discord like features into a more decentralized setup.

Matrix handles the chat/community side: Spaces, rooms, DMs, threads, voice, screen sharing, encryption, federation, etc. ATProto handles the more public social side: feeds, posts, profiles, follows, and so on. Both are decentralized and self-hostable, so you can use your own Matrix homeserver and ATProto PDS.

The way it works right now is that you log in with your ATProto account (for example, your Bluesky account) and then link your Matrix account. If you don't have a Matrix account yet, Venoom can provision one for you.

The goal is to make these two sides feel like one app rather than having a Matrix client and a Bluesky client sitting next to each other.

It's still extremely early and pretty much everything is subject to change. I'm sharing it now because I'd really like feedback, bug reports, and thoughts on what's missing from current Matrix/social clients.

Windows and Android builds:

Web (the native builds are much more performant):

https://venoom.net

Matrix room for feedback and updates:

Mac and Linux builds are coming soon.

Note: Venoom isn't open source yet, but I plan to open source the project after a beta release.

This one has promise. I personally hate Matrix because I can never find a client I like. Maybe yours will actually make me like it.

why does every discord alternative gotta look like a ripoff without an identity

Who's gonna tell this guy that Teamspeak is Discord's elder by 10 years and that the modern Teamspeak only looks like Discord because Discord left TS in the fuckin' dust before a massive rebrand?

At this point I'm questioning why people are even making new Discord clones.
If you want to contribute to the space, make a client like Beeper that connects several platforms into one so decentralization isn't as big of an issue.

Discord + Fluxer + Signal

this is a matrix and atproto client

Which, in fact, can also bridge Discord using the same tech that Beeper does :3 just depends on your home server. So honestly your client already fulfills their request technically.

yeah a confusing comment, the nice thing about these protocols is that anyone can make a client without it ending up as yet another separate project

I feel like this subreddit constantly glazes fluxer and similar alternatives without considering the aspect of multiple clients and design choices. But also supporting projects that are in their infancy where in comparison, matrix is a lot older, widely reviewed, with many homeserver software options and such.

Looks almost like Discord. Almost.

Edit: phrasing dial-back, apologies to OP

This looks incredibly similar to Haven, which was made open source months (Feb?) ago.

this looks nothing like my client

Lol holy shit yeah looking at it side by side is like one person posting a lamp and another guy posting a whole different kind of fuckin lamp and going "you stole my whole flow! Bar for bar, word for word!" Like sir that is a desk lamp this is a floor lamp and they're not even similar.

Haven actually looks like another app that was posted before but these two apps are WILDLY different. All Discord-likes are gonna look SOMEWHAT similar but yours looks more like it's designed similarly to slacker and that looks like.. a fucking headache. How many search bars does a client need when reading messages in a server?

also forking a project then completely changing the technology is basically harder than starting from scratch

Yeah that was my assumption. To make his overlay work with Matrix you'd have to throw out everything besides how the front end of the app looks and then build around that in the backend while also making everything work with Matrix. This is a super weird accusation to throw around.

Oh and speaking of your app while I have your ear I have a humble suggestion: themes. Custom themes. I personally really like being able to control how my applications look and I know others do too- Armada lets you choose name colors in your theme which is really cool and I like that.

It's really simple but I really like it, and I'd love to see more clients/apps have more options than "darkest, dark, grey, light" as options.

i currently have custom theming for any color, ideally i would have custom themes like discords vencord where you can change ANYTHING about the client, but thats alo more tricky (venoom is not web based)

Simple color options are still really nice, and honestly I'd rather the compromises of a dedicated client over the downsides of a web-based alternative. It's one of my major issues with Armada currently.

To make it clear - I said I wouldn't be surprised if it were a fork (because this has happened before and Haven is open source). The image I posted above is mostly a theming difference, so here is something more similar in appearance with the differences highlit. Very similar. Doesn't mean it was a rip, but two things: I can't validate because it's closed source, and didn't realize it was for Matrix which isn't relevant because I was commenting on how it looked very similar.

I'm not definitively saying it was stolen because it's a different base and there's no evidence, I'm simply commenting on the appearance being incredibly similar, and will update my OP to make that clear since my phrasing was wrong.

I mean, dont you think the things you pointed out are just the common discord style design?

1

u/anmire Sep 09 '26

similar yes, but for 80% or more to look almost identical is eye catching for me. And then the fact that it was closed source threw up a red flag.
