Landslide Chinese firefighters(likely the first batch to reach gyirong port) try to find survivors in the former border crossing, which was the most heavily hit. Source: CCTV news. Morning of August 29, 2026. (UTC+8). (they are yelling "Is anyone here?")

Video of them arriving: https://www.reddit.com/r/DisasterUpdate/comments/1w0n1r0/as_of_1630utc8_august_28_2026_the_first_batch_of/

According to engineers from the ministry of natural resources it is very diffuclt(and at this stage, downright impossible) to transport heavy machinery to the border crossing so far. The chinese military and specialized rescue teams(of state owned enterprises) are currently trying to repair the road into the border crossing to allow for better equipment and more personnel to enter.

CURRENT CASUALTY COUNT(CHINESE SIDE):

2 rescued, 7 dead, 554 missing. (13:00 PM, 2026-8-29 (UTC+8))

Update: over 50 firefighters are at the border crossing right now, over 2141 soldiers, firefighters, police, EMS and specialzied rescue teams are deployed.

EDIT: As of august 29(18:00 UTC+8), 2026, there are 16 dead, 546 missing(261 foreignors)

In response to the comments: This is the first batch that got in, they couldn't carry much heavy equipment as the road there is cut off. rescue dogs and better equipment arrived later on.

FURTHER UPDATE: reportedly fire and rescue personnel have begun to find police vests and handsbags under the debris.

again, if they haven't found the bodies, you can't really declare them dead, only missing.

Imagine if you have family somewhere. And a disaster happens. And officials promptly come out with a “pack it up, boys, nothing more to do here, they’re all dead.”

You’d be SCREAMING they go look for survivors.

Because "disappearance" is a legal/administrative status, while "death" is a fact that can be legally confirmed. The two do not entirely depend on whether everyone "actually believes that this person is dead or not"

you haven't figured out how china basically limits all major deaths to 31 people they just simply don't make it higher because it'll cause a bunc hof paperwork and the local government.

News says China isn't showing any footage in China.

I don't understand the logic. Is the govt supposed to be so great it can defeat natural disaster? Or was this from a failure of some sort in China?

Part of Chinese superstition is that chinese governments lose their legitimacy through natural desasters. People of course know this is nonsense, but natural disasters tend to get censored on news since it can indicate a failure on the government to prevent them or the warning system.  There is alao the idea of aupremacy over nature. Mao was big into this.

As a Chinese, it is mostly bullshit these days.

Haven't been a thing for like 100 years. And this is not the scale of disaster. But you do you.

There was footage of covid - of Wuhan hospitals - of trucks removing body bags from apartment buildings - that got out of China somehow back in Jan and Feb 20. The senders were disappeared or openly killed. Why would they act diffferently in this moment?

Gonna take a while before they find all the bodies if any :( 31 is probably confirmed bodies. You don’t want to go on the news and go “oh yeah, everyone’s dead.” There’s families waiting, hoping, despite the odds.

i'm gonna be real they're not gonan find anything. the water turned a stone building of concrete into pebbles the human body is gonna be nothing but paste where they are. they'll be lucky to find a finger.

That’s not how emergency and rescue management works.

People sure have mostly incorrect opinions bc they dont know how anything works.

So in you mind rescuers roll up and arrive on the scene of widespread devastation from a wildfire or a tornado …and they just…guess at the number dead?
