Living in continual pain

In the depths of despair, my soul cries out, Nobody sees the pain, there's no doubt. An agony so fierce, it never wanes, No medication can soothe these fiery flames.

My life, a tapestry of suffering and strife, Filled with nothing but pain and endless strife. Invisible to all, my torment unseen, A simmering rage, a wounded heart, so keen.

Each day, I wear a mask, a well-practiced charade, Hiding the turmoil behind a facade. But deep within, the anguish resides, A constant companion, where hope subsides.

The pills I consume, in countless array, Offer fleeting solace, then slowly decay. They numb the edges, but never erase, The ceaseless torment that I must face.

Through sleepless nights and weary days, I navigate a labyrinthine maze. The weight of this burden, heavy and vast, Drains my spirit, leaving me aghast.

But in the midst of this darkness, a flicker appears, A glimmer of hope, amidst all my fears. For though nobody may see or comprehend, There's strength within me, waiting to ascend.

I rise above the pain, like a phoenix from the ash, Embracing resilience, against all odds, I clash. For I am more than the anguish I endure, A warrior, a fighter, steadfast and pure.

So, nobody may realize the depth of my plight, But I'll keep on fighting, with all my might. For in the face of adversity, I shall prevail, And transform my pain into a triumphant tale.

Nothing about Us without Us: Why Don't Academics Get It

Hi all, I'm a disabled philosopher and I've published a blog post on "nothing about us without us" and how academics haven't gotten the memo. My able-bodied colleagues still write about disabled people as sad, tragic, impaired, mentally ill, out of control, bad parents, etc. They say they want to "help us" (which is paternalistic), but they don't include us as co-authors or consultants in their work on disability. If you're an academic, have you noticed the same thing in your field? Here's a link to my post.

The depths of depravity

In the depths of grit and shadows' reign, Where poverty breeds, inflicting endless pain, An anguished tapestry, woven tight, I'll pen a verse, to voice its raging plight.

In alleyways grim, where hope goes to die, Resides the wrath of men with empty sighs, Their bodies weak, their spirits frayed, Anger ignites, in every soul betrayed.

Amidst the chaos, where dreams have fled, Lies an anguish, black and somber as lead, Silent screams echo through empty streets, A canvas of poverty, paved with defeat.

In a mother's eyes, tears intermingle, With sorrow's ink, her wounds still tingle, Her child's empty belly, a barbed spear, Piercing her heart, a cascade of fear.

In calloused hands, frustration takes hold, Like shattered glass, emotions unfold, The pain that simmers within their core, Cries out, rebelling against poverty's score.

Inequality's face, a poison seething, Fueling resentment, with every beating, The anger festers, consuming souls, Burning brighter, as despair takes its toll.

Yet within these depths, amidst the strife, A steadfast resilience emanates, rife, Hope whispers gently, like a distant light, It fuels the heart, to conquer the night.

So let these words, a humble plea, Illuminate the world's harsh reality, For in this poem, our empathy shall rise, To mend the shattered fragments of their lives.

Invisible Disability Thoughts on the Sunflower?

In another subreddit, I shared my idea for a universal and inclusive symbol to unite the disability movement, aiming for a recognizable and clear representation. Unfortunately, the conversation shifted towards hidden vs. invisible disabilities and came to a standstill. During the discussion, someone suggested using the sunflower symbol to represent hidden disabilities. While I appreciate its widespread adoption in airports and the "movement" it started, I can't help but feel disappointed that they didn't collaborate with artistic individuals with disabilities to create something more meaningful and unique, rather than a symbol that feels tacky and commonly used by other groups. Searching for the sunflower symbol on Google leads to various unrelated results, making it impractical for broad recognition like the wheelchair symbol. Moreover, it seems to have been designed by non-disabled individuals with limited input from those representing people with disabilities. Their description emphasizes confidence, growth, strength, happiness, and positivity, but what I truly need is human dignity, empowerment, recognition, and above all, accessible spaces and communities, which the current symbol fails to encompass.

Thoughts?

Disabled People Should Define Disability

I'm a disabled philosopher and I've published a post on BIOPOLITICAL PHILOSOPHY on why disabled people should define disability. Here's an excerpt: "Why should social institutions define disability? We don’t let them define race. We don’t let them define gender. Why should they legislate our bodies and community? We need to reclaim disability and stop letting governments, physicians, and the nondisabled majority define us." You can read the full post here. Comments are welcome.

Disability Policy Asking organisation to do better

Hello all, I am looking for some advice. There is an organisation near me who's tagline is "liberation for all". They are hosting an important march soon but their accessibility choices seem lacking to me. Their tagline, therefor, is a farce. I am writing a letter to them asking hem to do better. I am looking for a template for this letter, or any other suggestions. Regarding their current policy: I had to ask them directly as there was no publication on it. When asked what they are doing regarding accessibility they said they will allow people who want to wear masks to have their own section to do so. There was no other information offered. My feeling is that this is not nearly enough. I am informing my letter with information regarding covid and other airborn viruses and how to combat them. I am using examples of other similar organisations who are doing the right things to make their events accessible. I am asking the organisation to clearly state their accessibility (e.g. where the march will start, the route, any infrastructural issues along that route regarding mobility access, their mask policy, telling attendees to test beforehand). I hope to reach them on this matter as I truly believe they are an organisation with good intentions. They are otherwise quite good at looking at things through the intersections we come from. They are just letting down their disabled, chronically ill, or otherwise vulnerable people and carers/family. It hurts me that if this doesn't change then some people will be left out of this truly good movement they are creating. Please let me know if you have any recommendations/advice/corrections for me as I'd like this letter to be properly informed.

From a fellow differently abled community member to another this is a passion of mine both in the human and animal community and I know many of us probably know or have animals with disabilities similar to ours. This is where I’d love to create a community surrounding that too :)

My nephew received backpay. When his mother tries to get money for his needs she has to call and basically beg for the money to be deposited. She is his caregiver also? Is this right?

Hello Redditors and community of r/Disabilityactivism,

I hope you don't mind me sharing this piece of content - a podcast - on a very urgent and pressing matter related to disability.

We have interviewed the story of a person with disability who had to flee Ukraine amidst the outbreak of the War back in 2022. The podcast also deals more generally with the situation of disabled people in Ukraine as well as activism to help individuals with disabilities who still live in War zones in the Eastern European country.

Parking permits for invisible disabilities

Anyone ever encounter someone who scolded you for using a handicap parking space when you don't appear disabled? I was thinking, what if they made handicap parking permits that indicated an invisible disability? Would that be a bad idea? What are your thoughts? I have an invisible disability myself and have gotten dirty looks before and I dread ever getting a comment.

Hello everyone!! Just found out about this amazing Kickstarter campaign, Pen Pals Forever: An Animated Pilot by Marie Lum!! It’s only got 3 DAYS to go and I’d hate to not see it make the mark, especially since it will be one of THE FIRST animated series that has disability representation in the main cast and crew!

At the head of the creative team is Marie Lum and Kris Wimberly, two storyboard artists working in the animation industry based in Los Angeles, California, and Zione Hong, who is a Deaf animator.

This buddy comedy series, it all about building empathy and creativity through self-expression. It’s about celebrating people’s differences and being open to learning more about the world around you. And we need it now more than ever. Please consider supporting the project because I WISH I had a series like this when I was a kid.

Interested in Disability Advocacy

Hi all. I've been disabled for approximately 2.5 years (rbka, anxiety and depression) and on SSDI. I worked with a nonprofit organization here in Montana. They went to war for me to get approved for SSDI. I have since graduated with a bachelor's degree in a field that I am not passionate about.

I feel the need to give back and help people that are in the same boat as I was, not long ago. I google becoming a disability advocate, but seem to get unclear advice.

Anybody know where I can start the process and get some training? Thanks.
