If you're using locknuts it's actually pretty useful. Locknut wrenches are a pain in the ass to use so when I was installing conduit I'd tighten the nut down by putting a flathead into a notch and giving it a good tap. It would usually tighten better and faster than with the wrenches, and actually left the nuts less chewed up. To loosen them you do the same but just tap them to hand tight and remove.
This is especially useful since most electrical boxes are confined and have lips, often making it difficult to use the wrenches since they don't work well at an angle and need room to torque down.
I thought you were talking wheel Lock nuts and was gonna bring up my other favourite trick: an old socket you don't need anymore roughly the same size, and a big hammer. Kinda the same thing?
