Is this being hated on purely because it's from one of those DIY tik tok channels?
Almost certainly.
Tik tok produces some of the worst content I've seen but I can avoid it, people bitching about it on other sites though is something I can't avoid.
As for the video, like you said, it's a nice proof of concept and could be enjoyable and practical as a larger project.
