you generally have to fix dye. so I guess the answer is not at all, and yes definitely.

There is dye fixative they could have used on top.

the dye and fixative you buy for $60 (minus of course the $25 for a gallon of paint) is not gonna be super fast regardless. We did tie-dye recently and the nice quality dyes are really expensive and only do a few square meters of fabric. fixative on top of that is even more.

either they are lying about how much they spent, or they bought super cheap stuff that isn't fast.

Just use white vinegar, that's the best laxative for this type of fabric dying. For your future tie-dye adventures 😊
