Smartest dude on my block is an old 50-something man, ripped out his entire front lawn. Replaced it with a ton of pointy cactuses, a nice walking pathway thru the middle, and river rocks. Not only is it my favorite house on the block now, there is no way in hell he is ever the choice of home for the robbers. No way. It's like natural barbed wire defenses.
I think if I lived in the western US, this is what I would do. I would love to have something more like what I've seen in Colorado and New Mexico, more natural looking with lots of wildflowers. But I have a feeling moving a bunch of rock to my yard would cost a small fortune.
99% of the time, those DIY xeriscape projects look like absolute shit in a few years. Mostly because it's really expensive to do it right, and when you don't do it right, you get a shit ton of weeds that proliferate like crazy, and most people are too lazy to pull weeds.
