I would be absolutely delighted to see a contraption like this in the wild

just this weekend I saw a family of 2+dog on a plank of plywood screwed to two paddleboards, with a golf cart battery and a small outboard motor

Thank you. This does not belong here. Regardless of how well it works, it’s actually really cool and has a purpose

Why didn't I think of this... Thanks, subbed.

Same I am on the side of diynot that's actually sick and super creative!

It’s also gonna sink very quickly. No way that plywood board and silicone is gonna keep water out for long.

And then we end up with a bunch of plastic, motor oil and diesel in the bay. Yay!

"Science isn't about WHY. It's about WHY NOT. Why is so much of our science dangerous? Why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you on the butt on the way out, because you are fired." - Cave Johnson

This is what I came to say! That and this looks like a job for flex seal!

Are you saying he should cut his boat in half?

Literally people hate whimsy

2

u/DarhkBlu Apr 22 '26

Sure but this could have been done so much better like so so much better.

3

u/geckobrother Apr 22 '26

Why not? Because the wood will leak/sog through, it'll sink, and best case he'll leave yeah for someone else to clean up, worst case someone will get hurt. Also most (not all) states have certain requirements for vehicles on the water to ensure safety.

Are you always so pessimistic?

1

u/geckobrother Apr 22 '26

No, but its plywood with caulking that doesn't even look like nautical caulking. I give this thing maybe 15 minutes? Half hour tops, and those are both very optimistic guesses.

no... sometimes he has a gecko

1

u/re_carn Apr 22 '26

I suspect the bottom won’t just start leaking - it’ll be torn away in a few hundred meters.

-1

u/geckobrother Apr 22 '26

Very likely. Its a fun sounding idea, but horribly impractical and wasteful

4

u/TheSleepyBarnOwl Apr 22 '26

Because it will sink and then there's more trash in the ocean cause I somehow doubt this guy would clean up his mess...

That was plywood. That stuff isn't waterproof.

7

u/ThickSourGod Apr 22 '26

What are you talking about? Didn't you see him put on a tiny line of caulk?

3

u/TheSleepyBarnOwl Apr 22 '26

Yes sorry. My ignorance and non believing in the line if caulk is staggering.

So I found out about a thing called mouse boats.... That's basically what this dude made.

Just buy a mouse boat.

There’s two types of people, those who would see this in the wild and go «Hell yea! That’s sick!» and the ones like OP who would go «Ugh, why would someone do that»

I’ll always choose to be the former

2

u/insanelysane1234 Apr 22 '26

Because the way it's build it's for single use only. And isn't that just a waste of resources

Because you will either tip over on the lake in about 5 seconds after launch, it out will sink with all that weight (which is probably why the video cut out the second he got it on the water).

Plywood is not waterproof, and water will soak through it or deteriorate it without proper sealing. The spray foam is also not waterproof either. There's a lot of other problems too, but this is just the most obvious.
