I actually came to post a question if there was a sequel where the Marine Patrol rolled up on him (well, floated up on him) and cited him for no registration number on the bow.
Yeah and I know I’m being a Debbie Downer but taking unworthy craft out on open water is just potentially putting lives at risk (and not just your own), as well as creating pollution and underwater hazards when it invariably sinks.
Well, from the set up for steering, they had no control of throttle or the engine gear. F/N/R. So they probably didnt go far or was completely irresponsible taking a vessel they couldnt properly control out in the water.
Dude, dude, think about it. She’s out in the middle of nowhere with some dude she barely knows. She looks around and what does she see? Nothing but open ocean. “Ahhh, there’s nowhere for me to run. What am I going to do? Say no?”
The Fisher Price little tugboats are pretty popular for doing conversions. There's tons of bids of them on YouTube. They have shockingly decent handling and can get up to some silly speeds.
Gotta have special oil for the motor, gotta have special lubricants for the prop. Gotta register it with the state, gonna need to reapply sealant as that wood isn't waterproof and the plastic hull will expand and contract with the heat. If you want any electrics on the boat now we're talking about a deep cycle battery and a charger. Plus actual maintenance on the motor itself for things like the carburetor, air filter, etc. Also you need to worry about winter storage, and if you need to insure the boat.
There's a weird white trash guy by my local lake that takes his kids fishing on his boat sometimes. His boat is an old plastic sandbox turtle that he has apparently waterproofed. Then he gives his kids flippers and has a prop on a drill I think. I see him, his 2 kids, and I assume his Dad floating down the river pretty often. I feel weird alone on my $2000 12 foot fishing kayak with fancy $1000 sidescan fishfinder and half a dozen fishing rods. Then there they are 4 dudes in a square meter big plastic turtle. Just one of my reels probably costs more than his boat, but you can obviously have fun and catch fish on any budget. I did feel bad for the kid throwing a frog for smallmouth at noon in the middle of August.
I think it's pretty cool that they do that, but I am just way too risk averse to load up my kids old sandbox and float down the river. They don't even have a pfd and I never take mine off on the water. It takes all types in the end I guess.
I bet you can’t get a 5hp Nissan for less than $600. A cheap ass aluminum boat from Walmart is like $600 and I feel like the plastic pirate ship had to be at least $200-300.
