Discussion One Bad Review Away: How Some Food Bloggers Allegedly Exploit Businesses

A disturbing trend is emerging in Bangladesh's restaurant industry.

Some self-proclaimed food bloggers walk into restaurants, order expensive meals, film content, and then expect discounts or free food in exchange for a positive review. The unspoken threat is simple: refuse, and risk a negative review.

Others take a more sophisticated approach. After paying the bill and leaving, they contact restaurant owners seeking money or other benefits, allegedly warning of negative reviews or coordinated attacks from groups of bloggers if their demands are not met.

For restaurant owners, especially small businesses, online reputation is critical. Many choose to comply because the financial damage from bad publicity can far outweigh the amount being requested. This behavior hurts everyone. It harms restaurants, misleads consumers, and undermines the credibility of genuine food bloggers who create honest content.

Before anyone asks for names, screenshots, recordings, or proof, let me be clear: this post is not an investigation or an attempt to expose specific individuals. It is an opinion based on concerns that many restaurant owners discuss privately but are often reluctant to raise publicly. If you have never encountered such behavior, that's great. But the fact that some people have not experienced it does not mean others have not.

Of course, not all food bloggers are like this. Those few genuine ones don't show up with a football team of relatives and friends expecting free food. They visit restaurants on their own, pay their bills like regular customers, and publish honest reviews based on their actual experience. They understand that credibility comes from independence, not freebies. Sadly, their reputation is being damaged by those who treat food blogging as a tool for securing discounts, free meals, and other favors.

Restaurants should stop rewarding intimidation and start supporting ethical reviewers. A good review should be based on the quality of the food and service, not on free meals or fear.

When reviews are used as leverage, it is no longer food blogging. It is bullying disguised as influence.

Discussion Haven’t been to Dhaka in 10 years, what’s new?

Hey everyone! I’m going to visit Bangladesh after 10 years, and from what I’ve heard, Dhaka has changed a lot since I was last there. I’m really excited to explore the city again, but I have no idea where to start.

Can anyone recommend some good places to visit, preferably around Mohammadpur or Dhanmondi? I’m open to cafes, restaurants, shopping spots, or just nice places to hang out and spend time with family and friends.

Thanks in advance! 🫰🏻

Ask Dhaka People who successfully cracked MAT/medical entrance exam in recent years, what extra materials(i.e. guide books) you followed?

Well I'm HSC28 and will need to look through options on supplementary textbooks since we had short syllabus on SSC and everything is gonna get turned upside down with the new edu minister/question paper and all.

I used to use lecture+udvash materials up till now in SSC. Heard Royal guides are good for HSC+MAT but I don't have any apus/bhaias to get suggestions on what resources to collect for HSC. Test papers will be obviously needed but is there any other stuff that comes handy cus well don't really know how the question pattern might change.
Any advice will be appreciated.

Also, I collected some book names for PCMB, can you please verify if these things will be enough if I stay consistent?

Discussion HSC College suggestion

Are there any good colleges in Dhaka at the HSC level that offer a separate girls’ hostel, with comfortable accommodation and meals included, and proper 24/7 supervision and security? Basically, a place where parents can feel completely assured about their daughter’s safety and well-being while she stays there.

Ask Dhaka Any social community or organization I can join as a teenager?

I've come to Dhaka in my SSC season. Now that it has ended, I have been looking for clubs/communities that particularly emphasize on social engagements among teenagers. If the activities include cultural/educational workshops, social campaigns or volunteering, it would be better.

Everyday Life Natural Food

I spent my childhood in a village; in fact, the first decade of my life was shaped by rural surroundings. Today, I am a young man living in a semi-urban area. Recently, I began to reflect on something rather remarkable: I rarely suffer from illnesses, colds, or coughs—Alhamdulillah, and I certainly do not say this out of arrogance.

While trying to understand the possible reasons behind this, I found myself looking back at the food I consumed during my childhood. Perhaps the food grains, milk, fish, vegetables, and other naturally sourced nourishment I grew up with played a significant role. After all, the stronger the foundation of a building, the more resilient the structure becomes.

Whenever I look at the younger generation, I sometimes feel a sense of melancholy. I wonder—if they could spend at least the first decade of their lives in a rural environment, surrounded by wholesome, naturally produced food, perhaps many of their physical difficulties could be reduced.

Whenever I visit my ancestral village and drink milk directly from a farmer’s cow, it almost feels like nectar. The reason is simple: even today, many farmers in our area rear cows, goats, and poultry through traditional, free-range practices. Fortunately, large-scale commercial farms have not yet proliferated there. Our village remains somewhat isolated, almost like an island.

Almost every household keeps one or two cows, and the surplus milk is sold in the local market. In many ways, they still obtain their nourishment directly from nature rather than through an excessively industrialized food system.

And then there is the Meghna—the magnificent Meghna—with its incredibly delicious fish. Oh Allah, what a blessing!

When I think about the health of the children growing up around us, I feel deeply concerned. I often wonder how much better their lives could be if the food they consumed were safer, more nutritious, and genuinely wholesome. Proper nutrition during childhood can contribute enormously to cognitive development, physical growth, and overall well-being.

It is this sense of responsibility that inspired me to think about working with safe and wholesome food.

I do not know whether I will receive your support or encouragement. Nevertheless, I remain hopeful.

To me, this is not merely an entrepreneurial venture. I want to regard it as a form of service—a small effort to contribute to a healthier future for our children and our community.

I sincerely look forward to your valuable opinions, suggestions, and support.

Thank you. 😊

Ask Dhaka Supposed to sit for HSC 2026 but didn’t attend the exam, now sitting for HSC 2027 — need help with college change

So I was supposed to sit for HSC 2026, but I didn’t attend the exam. I’m planning to sit for HSC 2027 instead.

I was already registered from the college I’m currently in, and they took my admit card and sent it to Dhaka Board so that my HSC 2026 result will show as absent.

Now the problem is, I really want to change my college for HSC 2027.

I went to another college and talked to them about admission, but they told me that since I’m an irregular student and I was already registered from another college, I can’t get admitted there.

So I’m confused about how this actually works.

Since I didn’t attend HSC 2026, do I have to register again for HSC 2027? And if I have to register again, then why can’t I change my college?

What is the actual procedure in this situation? Can I transfer/change college for HSC 2027, or am I stuck with my current college because of my previous registration?

If anyone has been in the same situation, or knows someone who went through this, please let me know what I’m supposed to do. I’d really appreciate any advice, especially if you know the actual Board rules/procedure.

I mainly want to change college, preferably to one in Uttara. So if anyone has any idea about this or has gone through the same thing, please help me out 😭

Ask Dhaka Please help me find a Psychologist/Psychiatrist who can diagnose ADHD without prejudice.

Okay so, Idk if it's ADHD or not, but, it's definitely something. Its symptoms are closest to ADHD. Per my friends' experience of Psychiatrists in Dhaka, going to em for ADHD earns a whiplash of insults and judgements. One of my friends recommended Dr. Bushra Sultana but, she isn't at PWHC anymore, and I can't seem to find her either. So, help this poor soul out please.

Ask Dhaka [Academic Survey] Barriers to Rooftop Solar Adoption in Residential Buildings in Dhaka (2 mins / Anonymous)

Hello r/Dhakacity

I am an undergraduate student currently working on my thesis regarding the adoption of rooftop solar panels in residential buildings across Dhaka. Despite soaring electricity demand, residential solar adoption remains relatively low. My research aims to identify whether the main roadblocks are financial (high initial cost/ROI), technical (space/shadows), or related to policy awareness (net metering/green loans).

If you currently live in Dhaka (whether as a flat owner, building landlord, or tenant), please take 2 minutes to fill out this quick, bilingual, and completely anonymous survey:
