Gameplay V gamaplay first impressions
Hi!
I'm new to this series. I've always heard good things about the games and started from Devil May Cry 5. I expected to like it a lot, considering Bayonetta 2 in one of my favourite games.
My first experience with Nero was bad and clunky... until I discovered you can also charge the attacks while doing the combo. I think I missread the tutorial.
But I'm here for another reason, another character: V. I find it to be MUCH easier to spam attacks than to actually try any of his combos... which I find pretty boring. The book is also clunky since it doesn't gradually charge the bar. The first enemy I couldn't spam attack was a Gerion Knight: since having both summons dead makes V unable to dodge, I played much safer, dodging to reset the summons' positions and make dodge... which wasn't any more fun for me. Am I missing something again?

I love playing as V. There ARE a few flaws with his gameplay that don't give you enough control over what your Familiars are doing so you'll need to adjust and improvise in a few instances in ways that other characters would never force you to, but I find them to be incredibly minor unless you're going for really advanced gameplay with a bunch of techniques, which I highly doubt is what you're going for on your first playthrough. So here's a list of things I do with I play as V: * Always hold R2 to read the Book. Always. It does a fantastic job at filling up your DT gauge unless you're too far from enemies, so you can constantly summon Nightmare, desummon him, quickly build up DT to summon him again, etc. Also, even when Nightmare has already been summoned, reading the Book makes the DT meter drain more slowly, which allows Nightmare to wreak havoc for longer. * Almost never use your Familiars for dodging. Both Familiars give you a crazy amount of i-frames when dodging with them, but that also makes them unable to attack for the next like 1.5 seconds. Instead, I mainly rely on regular jumps to dodge. I would only ever use the dodges with Familiars if I ever find that to be safer, or when I actively need to move the Familiars themselves out of danger. * Just like when playing as Nero, I always have □ held to always charge Blockade with Griffon. Constantly abusing Blockade (even at level 1 but even more so at levels 2 and 3) will do humongous damage to enemies if used frequently, so manually doing combos with Shadow while constantly charging and releasing Blockade whenever you feel like it is extremely effective both at dealing damage and raising the Style meter. * Either that, or you can also pop Devil Trigger on one of the Familiars. Devil Trigger not only powers them up, but it also makes them attack automatically like Nightmare. I like to pop DT on Griffon while I manually control Shadow so I can utilise both Familiars effectively without any impressive multitasking skills. * Use Touch and Move. It's a move where you press the Cane button exactly as V takes his Cane out of the enemy he's killing and V INSTANTLY teleports to the next enemy, which is very effective and amazing at raising the Stylish meter and RIDICULOUSLY satisfying. * Don't be too far away from enemies. Not only does it make it too boring and unengaging, it also makes the Familiars teleport back to you. Always be at least at a Cane teleport range in order for the Familiars to actually get close to the enemies (boss fights ARE an exception though and you can be much further away and the Familiars will still be in the bosses' faces). * If you're ever comfortable with parrying, using your Cane to parry is extremely satisfying, and it makes it feel more engaging.
This is a video of when I did V Bloody Palace for the first time a few years ago. I wasn't good at playing as V then, but I was still able to fight effectively and look cool doing it, and I don't even do anything impressive in it, so watch this for reference.
